A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Ahhhhhh can you feel that? I can. That’s the sweet flow of a gentle marine breeze. Feels good. There are unconfirmed reports that breeze hit the players in the face as soon as they got off the plane and many of them fell to their knees, sobbing. Gratitude.

Hopefully the weather and the travel didn’t take too much out of our guys. The Reds are pretty bad but they’ve got some hitters who can make you pay. I’m still not sold on Peavy but appreciate what he’s doing or trying to do. He’s Cy Young compared to Cain.

Imagine how pissed off we’d be if Evans had signed Lincecum?

Time to get back on the winning beam, one way or another…..

Great post Flav. I can only imagine how those players feel getting that nice, gentle, marine breeze. I’ll probably get mine in the form of a hurricane at some point. Still, Home is good and Home Plate is how to score runs, so hopefully they get their home cooking and cross the other plate often. We Score (often), We Win.

So one of the four prospects the Cubs are allegedly offering for Chapman is the #24 prospect in baseball. The Giants as far as I know don’t have any prospects in the top 100. That seems like a pretty big overpay for a two month rental. Of course these deals seem to end up being much more watered down than what the rumors make them out to be.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2016 at 1:41 pm

Chapman was throwing serious gas when Blade and I were in NYC (if the gun was accurate, he was regularly touching 103-104). With each pitch, it looked like half the damned ballparks’ heads were on a string, as they would watch the pitch be delivered, and immediately look up at the area where the pitch speed was listed.

Let the loveable losing cubbies overpay. If we are picking the YankMee’s pockets, I would take Miller all day every day (and twice on Sunday) over Chapman,

It may turn out to be a good thing that the schedulers brought in the Reds before we face the Gnats from the District of Corruption. Perhaps Belt, Buster and Crawford can begin contributing once again. At least Crawford is a Bay Area dude and should be reinvigorated by the cool. It would be extra cool if BB9 and Posey get on base first. It would also be kewl if Pagan replaces Span at lead-off and the latter would be given a few days to chill on the pine. I’m sure several of us are pining for that move. C’mon Bochy!

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2016 at 1:51 pm

I’ve been calling for that move (Pagan in the lead-off, and Span with some pine-time) for at least a month. Yo skip! Make it happen, yesterday!

Dodgers have EZ schedule on paper this week. Not beyond possible the Giants find themselves tied for or behind division lead by end of week. They need to get their heads out of their nether regions on hitting…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2016 at 1:53 pm

I truly believe that we need to give the division lead to the bambinos of la-la land at some point (I prefer sooner rather than later), and at about the time that Pence and Panik return. This all fits in with my suggestion that our boys need some adversity (hey, there was tons of it in ’10, ’12, and ’14). Again – What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger. Come on your fuckers, torture me just a wee bit more!

Yeah, didn’t see the sweep at the hands of the Pads, but the East coast swing is always tough on these guys.

They need to catch a fire NOW. If the Dogs were playing halfway decently they’d already be past us.

Yeah, I think Span needs to come down with a lower body injury and sit for a couple days. He’s doing bupkus.

Tough trip to say the least. A hit there, a hit there with RISP and it goes different. Will adding Pence change that? Can he play 3b because Gillaspie and his .154 over the last week is annoying as hell. Especially when he goes for the gladiator style dirt rub up of his hands. Maybe dude should try some batting gloves. Posey hasn’t exactly been lighting it up either. Maybe the heat really did get to him. Let’s not even talk about the Big Poon Belt. Now they’re talking Houston Street??? FFFFffffff…

Crunch time coming up quickly. Now that the Cubs landed Chapman for a squadron of prospects the logjam on top level relievers has been broken. Mutts and Milwaukee are in talks over a Lucroy for Arnaud trade which would need to be sweetened for the Brewskis. Problem is, NY may toss in one of their 3 top prospects if Milwaukee includes one of their pair of quality relievers. My take for the last week or so is that the Brewers would be the best pickup joint for SF.

Andrew Susac has been dingering steadily over the past week, upping his potential as trade-bait. He should be worth a 3.75-4.25 ERA level guy. Would hate to see him go for a Bully, except for one of the very best.

disappointed we didn’t have the package to put together to get Chapman.

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 25, 2016 at 11:15 am

That was a crazy overpay by the Cubs. Two top 100 prospects and two other fringe prospects for a closer that will walk in three months. This is why it pays to wait until the final hour. I just hope Sabevans doesn’t have a problem working on the sabbath.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 25, 2016 at 11:16 am

Maybe I’m the only one thinking Chapman is just an arm injury in progress? He was never coming to SF, anyway. Cubs definitely going for the ring, all in, and why not? I like the ballsy move. After 100+ years of no WS, ya gotta go for it when you have a team like they do…

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 25, 2016 at 11:23 am

Very true. If any team should overpay, it’s certianly the Cubs. By the way, who was the last Giant prospect ranked in the top 25 of Baseball? Wheeler maybe?

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 25, 2016 at 11:28 am

Yeah, I think Wheeler was pretty high. Bum? Posey?

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2016 at 2:03 pm

Disappointed. Not surprised. Cubbies completely overpaid. Good on them.

  12. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 25, 2016 at 11:20 am

Steve Pearce would be a great add because of his versatility but he’s not a difference maker. I like picking him up because of the 3 guys we have coming back it should probably be assumed that at least one of them won’t make it back. Maybe 2. So I’m on board with Pearce, prolly wouldn’t cost a ton either.

Comment RE: Lou’s post yesterday about statues. I am more in the camp with snarrk. Not saying that Perry wasn’t deserving of the HOF, but he has just never been up there on my list of esteemed Giants. And he is a super nice guy. I have met him on two occasions at ST, and he was cool about signing my 2010 spring training lid (Vida Blue signed it, too). And I think he deserves a statue…I would just put up one for Bonds, first.
And Loo and I were in lock-step – look at Kent’s numbers as a second-sacker. Dude belongs in the HOF, AND deserves a statue at 24 Willie Mays Plaza. And Loo, you are correct. Of all the current Giant statues around the yard, Marichal is my favorite, hands-down (LOVE the high leg kick).

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 25, 2016 at 3:17 pm

I also believe Bonds deserves a statue, he built the fucking ballpark. I also believe he should be in the Hall and nobody else should be allowed in until he gets his bust in the HOF. But on the local statues, the Giants are using the Hall as a standard, Perry is in the Hall, he get’s a statue. By the way, he won one Cy with us and came in second while also with us. Tough crowd here.

I find the statue discussions interesting and agree with the comments about Kent & Bonds being deserving. If Posey sustains a high level of play he may be there too and let’s not forget Bochy who will be in the HOF. So that’s 3-4 more statues. Where do they put them? Along the walkway behind the right field archways? Line them around McCovey Cove?

The first side angle they showed, which was not shown again, clearly showed the dude reaching onto the field of play to catch the ball. Just a stupid move by a dumbfuck fan. The kid you can forgive, albeit barely. The adult, no way. They announce it before every fucking game, don’t reach onto the field of play or you’ll get the boot. But folks are too busy shoveling garlic fries down their gullets to notice.

Fucking Peavy. Who thinks the Giants will come back from this deficit?

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:31 pm

4th inning ugh..Peavy gave up that 3 run blast to Ortiz in the 4th last week:(

  48. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:28 pm

The walks were a killer. Peavy’s not good enough anymore to survive walking guys.

  49. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:30 pm

This team is floundering right now. Pitching, defense, hitting, the big trifecta. I don’t know about some of you, but the last thing I want is the Dodgers overhauling the Giants right now, as if that’s going to magically trigger some special mojo for the Giants. The way they’re playing, we’d be staring up the Dodger’s ass the rest of the way.

  50. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:33 pm

Yeah no need to bunt runners over and manufacture runs. Just wait for 3 run homer from Hunter Pence…

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:35 pm

That’s another part, their small ball game has gone AWOL. First and second, no outs in the second and Gillaspie can’t move the runners. It’s one thing to abhor the bunt, but when your team is struggling how about thinking outside the box.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:36 pm

And Pagan didn’t get the guy over in the first inning.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:42 pm

Exactly zum. Left handed batter no less.

Friend of mine gives me her season tickets to use once in a while and that section of the park is jammed with long-time Giants fans. Croix de Candlestick encrusted caps, season-long h/w scorebooks, etc. One family, bunch of Nob Hill assholes, obviously plays vicious Giants trivia games at the dinner table when they’re not busy one-upping each over the investments and lawsuits they’re pursuing. When those people sell their season tickets on StubHub to bandwagon fans, the section is a lot more enjoyable. “Excuse me, mate, but can you explain why the policeman fellow walked out to the hurler’s hill just then?”

  59. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:45 pm

    Another stupid base running mistake!!
But I will give the Reds credit on that one, pretty bitchin play they schemed up to nail Pena! Never seen a second basemen sneak behind a charging 1st basemen, well excuted..

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:48 pm

That was a cool play, but now Pena can forever say he was picked off first by the second baseman.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 25, 2016 at 8:55 pm

Seems like a firstbase coach should see that coming, IMO.

Parker took a 3-1 hanging slider down the middle for strike 2. I don’t get that. Even if you’re looking for a fastball there, you have to take a hack at that hanging pitch.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 25, 2016 at 9:00 pm

It’s the key for him taking the next step. He has to punish the pitcher for doing that, and not give the count leverage so easily back to the pitcher, so that Parker has to swing on a worse pitch on 3-2.

  65. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 25, 2016 at 9:02 pm

WilcoJoe, you reminded me of one dumb thing I saw in Mecca (i.e., Boston) – THE WAVE. Unbelievable. I would have thought never in a thousand years would I see the wave in Boston or New York.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 25, 2016 at 9:06 pm

Pardon me. It got murderalized while I was typing that. Why is it that we can see this shit, and Bochy won’t pull the plug on this dude? I don’t fucking get it. You KNOW he is throwing hit me stuff, but he keeps him in, hoping to squeeze another inning out of him. It’s total bullshit. Why the phuck have Suarez in the Pen for long relief if you’re not going to use his ass!!!!!….

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2016 at 9:09 pm
