A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Just Don’t Call Him “Late for Dinner”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 29, 2016

Whether you call him *Eddie” or “Nunie” or “EdNu”, one thing is for certain: he’s ours. He’s AAAAAALLLLLLLLLL ours!!!!! He’s very nice insurance for Panik’s head and Duffy’s heel. GEICO couldn’t get you that type of sweet *dome to toe* coverage.

The Nun-erator has blasted 12 dongs this season. He hit 12 dongs in his previous 4 seasons combined. That spike in production reeks of something juicy going on but that’s not for me to determine. He’s also decided to steal the shit out of some bases and regarding that I say, keep on running my man. The bottom line is that this dude has more speed and power (this year) than Panik and Duffy have combined.

Will he be able to play the NL game? Is he gonna pull a “Leake” and puss out now that he’s in a competitive situation? Two very valid questions.

But this is no “Orlando Cabrera” pick up. This dude is at the peak of his career (or his cycle). We should all be excited about this first move by Evans…..

I think we’re going to see a shit load of little moves on Monday morning. I understand they can’t make trades on Sun but what about Sat? I just hope Bobby Evans isn’t a “I refuse to work on the weekends” type of guy, because you know a shit load of conversations will be taking place all weekend even if trades can’t be transacted till Monday.

Wondering if Nunez could play center-field. Pagan is tolerable in the OF. Williamson seems to be developing. Pence return is eagerly awaited. Span and Blanco are meh. Nunez’ versatility is the key.

Jeez Stix, with all due respect, I think Span has been a pretty decent outfielder. He made a very nice catch yesterday, and I can recall several others. Blanco too has made some good plays over the years. It’s true, neither one of them can consistently hit worth a damn for the most part.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 29, 2016 at 10:15 am

I do not expect to see Nunez in the OF, and think with Pence’s return imminent, that the OF is okay. But when Pence returns, someone has to go. As much as I appreciate Blanco’s contributions over the years, I think he should be DFA’d (keep Parker and Williamson up and continue to get them some playing time).

Interesting to see what they do with Nunez, who could be a spark that helps re-ignite the offense.
If you look at numbers, Pena and Gillaspie have done just about exactly what Panik has hit for this year, and both have hit better than Duffy. Imo none of above are top of order hitters. Giants OB seems to have slipped overall except for Belt and Posey, tho the kids Mac and Parker have been OK.

Dunno what to do about leadoff, as no one else has high OB. Span and Pagan are dang near equal for OB and others like Belt and Craw would be better at driving in runs. Given what I’ve seen, Span is the best CF other than Blanco; Pagan has enough issues trying to play LF.

Even with all the lackluster play lately, Giants right with everyone else at top of league standings. I think getting a good solid game in all facets settles everyone back into win mode for the upcoming road trip.

BB, fwiw, the late great George Duke really did play trombone in Zappa’s band for 2 cuts on 1970 released “Chunga’s Revenge”–once on the tune I mentioned and again on skewering of Musicians union reps “Rudy Wants to Buy Yez a Drink” where he soloes on it. Good stuff, the inimitable FZ.
Saw Duke lead a small band over at the GAMH next to the Mitchell bros strip joint, very creative guy who really seemed to enjoy what he was doing.

The pianist I knew from the Zappa band was Don Preston. He was a huge Paul Bley fan. When I toured with Bley, Preston showed up at some gigs and Bley appointed him as our ‘sound check’ pianist … Bley hated sound checks … He’d quip, “I checked my sound 20 years ago!”

Giants are currently tied for 4th in the majors in OBP (tied with Colorado at .332. Pirates are 3rd at .333.

Nunez’s OBP is .325. Pena, Span, and Pagan are the top candidates to lead-off, and have the best OBP (outside of the middle of the order guys) at .333, .331, and .328, respectively.

Kid came into store where I work the other day in black SF jersey #19 with Scutaro on the back. Told him I loved to watch that guy hit for Giants–tremendous job of hitting the ball behind runners to advance guys, even with 2 strikes. None of Giants do that today, including Panik and Pagan.

I do remember when Bobby Bonds hit leadoff for Giants—tremendous combo of speed and power at top of LU.
Also K’d a lot, 175 one year iirc. But definitely brought excitement.
Maybe shaking up the LU somehow wouldn’t be such a bad move.

Loo thx for Alou article, great pic. Matty, the little guy pretty much forgotten as a Giant, wound up being quite a hitter for Pirates later on.

Just checked out the MLBTR comments section to see Twins fan reactions. Generally positive on the trade as the Twinkies have been soooo hurting for rotation quality. Though a Minnesotan i have barely followed them this season. Mejia may spend 3 weeks or so at Rochester, but don’t be surprised if he gets the call before September. Baseball people figure him for a #4 starting out and a #3 after a year or so in The Show.

  9. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 29, 2016 at 9:17 am

So this could be a possible lineup with all hands healthy…

    1) Nunez – LF/3b
    2) Panik – 2b
    3) Crawford – SS (why not hitting 3rd??)
    4) Posey – C
    5) Belt – 1b
    6) Pence – RF
    7) Duffman – 3b (Pagan in LF when Nunez at third)
    8) Span – CF

Span is not going to sit after signing a 3 year deal. What would look better is this:

    1) Nunez – 3b
    2) Panik – 2b
    3) Crawford – SS
    4) Posey – C
    5) Jay Bruce – LF
    6) Pence – RF
    7) Belt – 1b
    8) Span – CF

Wow, that looks as good as anyone in the NL. Bruce and Pagan both free agents and if you cant bring Bruce back, Nunez plays left and hopefully Duff reclaims third…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 29, 2016 at 10:30 am

I think Nunez is principally insurance for Duffy. With that Achilles (that has given him problems since high school), I am not expecting him back anytime soon.

  10. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2016 at 9:26 am

Man if only Bruce was controllable for a couple more years, I would be all over that. I just don’t think Sabevans will win a bidding war for his services and of course you have to pay a premium to get them (power hitters) to play at AT&T. By the way, Bruce is from the same hometown as my wife. Beaumont, Texas. The biggest shithole in the state of Texas. And that’s saying something. A lot of professional athletes have come from that area though. Not much to do but play sports and drink (a lot).

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 29, 2016 at 9:36 am

Checked out Beaumont back in 93 or so while doing antique show at Port Arthur. This was in January and you could pretty much smell the air. Struck me as if the April-October heat and humiliated relatives would be through the roof. Did find a couple nice coin shops there including one with several low-grade large cents from the 1840’s and 50’s which sold like hotcakes at various venues for nicely inflated prices as per their book values to serious collectors. That was in my gotta make a living outside the corporate matrix days.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2016 at 9:44 am

Yep, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Nederland make up the “golden triangle”. My wife is actually from Nederland. You could throw a rock from one town to the next. Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur. Still haven’t made it to her museum.

I read somewhere recently that Port Arthur is listed as the country’s most humid city. I believe it.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 29, 2016 at 10:02 am

I think Bruce is moving somewhere by Sunday and maybe the free agent status is lessening the offers the Reds are getting. Who knows maybe they can sneak in there somewhere and the Reds take a Parker or Williamson as the main piece and one decent piching prospect…

  11. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2016 at 9:40 am

One of the reasons I couldn’t give a shit if the Giants traded any of their top pitching prospects is that none of them have dominated for an extended period of time. If you look back at Bum, Timmy and Cain, those guys were men among boys in the minors. As far as I know they don’t have anyone who is dominating at every level on a consistent basis. If come Monday afternoon, Beede and Bickford are no longer in the org, it will be a good thing. It means management has done everything they could to win NOW.

  14. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2016 at 10:20 am

I would imagine Bruce is a type A free agent, so if he walks, the team will get a compensatory pick? If so, more reason to move a Bickford of Beede for him. You get Bruce the remainder of the year and then you replace Bickford or Beede with a player of the same or greater upside in the draft. Win-win. Now if he we could do that for a front line arm, even better.

  15. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2016 at 10:28 am

I guess it was 2008 or 2009 when our farm system was stacked with talent. Most of us flappers were wise enough to not want the team to deal a Bum, Posey or Belt at the deadline. We knew they were the future of the organization because their numbers spoke for themselves. Fortunately the only top prospect we dealt was Tim Alderson for Glass Sanchez. Is Alderson even still in baseball? Fast forward to today and 3 WS rings later and no one is complaining of giving the farm away to win another ring. I dig that.

  16. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 29, 2016 at 10:39 am

Just looked-up Alderson. Played last year at AA for Nats. Playing for an Independent team this year. Even with Sanchez’s “glass-like’ status, the Giants made-out in that trade.

Your not going to get much of an argument from me Chi. Gillaspie’s departure doesn’t affect me to any degree but Blanco’s would make me sad. It’s been said many times here that when he is coming off the bench he is a lot better than when he is getting regular starts. Overall, for a guy off the bench he has been a good Giant imho.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 29, 2016 at 1:28 pm

I will not argue with anything you say there, Lisle. I just think that if one has to go (and they do) between Blanco, Parker, and Mac, that Blanco draws the short straw for me. He has been a wonderful Giant, and I am very appreciative of what he has brought to the fight.

Jay Bruce has played a grand total of 11 games in LF in his career and zero since 2008.

These roster decisions are tough, mainly because they have to carry 19 pitchers.
I would be stunned if they cut Blanco loose – he’s done too much good for them and he has all that versatility and post-season experience. Pena could be spared over Gillaspie because he switch hits and plays more positions. I think they’ll package Parker, Susac, and more for something decent…

I have to go with San Diggity and stick with Span in the lead position. We even discussed this in NY and both of us shook our heads at the venom he receives here. I still think he will do better going forward. At least he walks more than the rest of these guys, so there’s that. As you pointed out Chi (Willie did too), there’s no difference between Nunez, Span and Pagan in OBP.

Personally, if we had any frickin’ power in this LU, I would have Craw batting lead off because of his OBP and walk rate. However, he can drive in runs and until Pence is Pence, and Posey is Posey, we need him to plug other holes in this ship of fools LU.

This is my favorite Smiths song. There used to be a cheezy 1/2 hour video show that would play on the local TV station when I lived in Colorado, and they must have had all of 25 videos to play. GH, I totally disagree with your 2 ideal LUs, e.g., Belt and Span in the 7 and 8 slots? Hilarious. Belt has 60 walks and Span has 40 walks – they’re 1st and 2nd on the team. You want the guys who can get on base at the top of your LU, not the bottom. Please explain your rationale . . . Inquiring minds would love to know?

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 29, 2016 at 12:38 pm

Well Span goes down with Nunez joining the team and likely leading off or should. I contemplated Span hitting 2nd but not enough of a contact hitter to be in the 2 hole and not with Panik back. They tried Belt hitting 3rd and that flopped. If you have Pence back and possible Jay Bruce has a wish and a prayer, Belt and then Span cant hit anywhere except 7th and 8th. If you want to pop Span as the #9 hitter as a second lead off, fine by me.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 29, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Span has a better OBP than Nunez. So does Pagan and Blanco. Nunez has had the most success in his career in the three hole (albeit, only 12 starts there). Most of his career he has hit down in the LU.

I have to agree with Blade on this one, GH. No way you drop Span that far down in the LU to supplant him with Nunez.

  25. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 29, 2016 at 12:02 pm

I found this interesting re Jay Bruce…

Reds president of baseball operations told reporters, including Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer and MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, that interest in Jay Bruce has been surprisingly tepid to this point in the summer. While a number of clubs have reached out to him on Bruce, Jocketty contends that the offers have been shockingly weak to this point, telling Buchanan, “You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff,” in reference to the packages offered by interested parties. While the immediate assumption might be that the Reds are asking too much, Jocketty sounds fairly grounded in his expectations, telling Buchanan: “We want a legitimate prospect. The guy’s a valuable player.”

It would seem, then, that the Reds would be content to move Bruce for a package centering around one quality prospect — a seemingly reasonable expectation for a player that is slashing .271/.323/.572 with 25 homers on the season. Jocketty suggested that he expects added action over the weekend, but added that “basically the same clubs” have been sniffing around on the veteran with no teams being “really aggressive” to this point. Defensive metrics do peg Bruce as one of the worst defenders in all of baseball this season, though Buchanan notes that he’s spoken to evaluators with other clubs who don’t believe Bruce’s glovework to be nearly as poor as Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating would otherwise depict.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 29, 2016 at 12:04 pm

As I speculated above, there may be a tepid market for Bruce, meaning a Giant offer of slightly better than crap may cinch a deal. Parker and Beede I think gets her done…

Also a limited no-trade option: Arizona, Boston, Cleveland, Miami, Minnesota, NY Yankees, Oakland and Tampa Bay.

I’d still bat Nunez leadoff. At least Nunez gets on base by hitting the ball. .006 diff in obp isn’t enough to warrant Span over Nunez. And Nunez is a legit base stealer.

Span isn’t. I know Bochy doesn’t run much, but Nunez is a threat to steal. Since we don;t move runners over, this is a necessity. Or a nicety.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 29, 2016 at 3:20 pm

I am at 213 points but the leader ($50,000) is at 300 points with guys (no names)who will likely fade over the weekend. There are only 30 players currently abovd 280points. I haven’t seen a DK golf tournament with such medicore scores since I started playing.

Nunez should absolutely be leading off. The lead off hitter isn’t simply about OBP and walks. It matters what they do when they get on base. And this dude will run unlike Span. He’s got pop (unlike Span). Bottom line is that Span basically does shit when he gets on base. I’m ready for a dude to fly around the bases with his helmet trailing behind him. That’s Nunie.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 29, 2016 at 4:27 pm

no. The Giants don’t operate that way. This is who they want–a dude who can play multiple positions who hits line drives and plays good defense. He’s got a great arm, too, that hasn’t been talked about. He’s going to throw rockets from 3rd base when he plays there.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on July 29, 2016 at 4:46 pm

I heard some sports writer from the Minnesota Star say exactly the opposite in a KNBR interview this morning. He spoke of watching Nunez taking infield practice by purposely working on bouncing throws to 1st from in the hole because his arm wasn’t strong enough to get off a clean one at that distance.

I heard his name but I cannot recall whatever the fuck it was now. I take it he was the equivalent of a Baggs or Pavolich type guy for the Twins. 47. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 29, 2016 at 4:59 pm

Sayonara Meijia. Personally, I’m not going to miss him. Baseball America says Mejia “profiles as a solid, durable No. 4 starter.” Mejia was listed as the Giants’ No. 5 prospect at midseason after being No. 10 entering the season.

Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen offers his scouting report, saying Mejia “doesn’t have the fire-breathing stuff that many of his fellow 2016 Futures Game participants do, but he combines a deep, usable repertoire with advanced sequencing to accrue outs — and was arguably the most advanced arm in the 2015 Arizona Fall League.” Longenham concludes by saying he thinks Mejia has a future as a No. 4-type starter.

Consensus? Back of the rotation guy and we have too many of those guys already, e.g., Cain, Peavy, Alphabet.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 29, 2016 at 5:06 pm

Of course, this guy Nunez has worts too. Probably why the Twins bit on Meijia. Per Fan Graphs, this is what they said in part:

“Yep, worst season ever. Nunez converted about a third as many of the difficult plays as the average shortstop, and about a fourth as many as the best. There’s also this, too: he only converted 94.7% of the routine plays, the sixth-lowest total among 130 shortstop seasons of at least 500 innings since 2012. In 2013, Nunez was the very worst shortstop at making difficult plays, and nearly the worst at making routine plays. In other words, he just didn’t make any of the plays. That’s how we wind up with a -28 DRS in 600 innings.”

Here is the entire column: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eduardo-nunez-and-the-case-of-the-minus-28/

Here’s another Fan Graphs article on him. I think the main thing about Nunez is that he has to play to be effective. I think early in his career, he got pigeonholed as a utility guy. I also think if you are not in the LU everyday, it’s more difficult to get comfortable and produce. Twins were a Godsend for him, allowing him to play and show what he has.

Unless Trump can flip Pennsylvania, he will have a hard time winning the election, even if Hillary can’t hang onto Nevada and New Hampshire. And it’s doubtful he can flip Pennsylvania. African-American voters in Philly and Pittsburg should be a decisive factor.
Hillary should be able to hang onto Nevada; but New Hampshire, who knows? I wouldn’t claim to know much about that state.
It would be nice if she could hang onto Florida, because that opens up more paths to victory; but Florida is Florida, a state you never want to HAVE to be counting on in the election.

Tonight’s choices were Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia, both of the Cards and both going for the minimum (or almost minimum) of $2100. I took Garcia only because Wong has had a shitty season thus far. Although both are doing well right now, the clear “winner” is Wong with a 2 for 3 line, including a triple, with a run and an RBI.

Speaking of Radnich, I rarely listen to him, but heard him a little today, and he really annoyed me with something. He said that, even going back 30 years, he could never understand why people would want to go watch the 49ers practice in summer camp. Some friends and I used to go watch some practices in Rocklin in the heat. You could get pretty close to the various practice fields and watch them do drills, and then go sit in the bleachers (it’s a junior college) and watch 7 on 7 drills, Joe Montana throwing to Jerry Rice, John Taylor, and others, being guarded by people like Ronnie Lott and Eric Wright. If Radnich is such an elitist schmuck that he can’t see why that would be fun for 49er fans, than he’s completely tone-deaf.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:24 pm

Nowadays, summer camp is pretty much closed to the public, I’m assuming, which is too bad. Back in the day, the camp practices were open to the public, AND the Niners were winning Super Bowls.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:53 pm

Shit I used to see them practice at Sequoia HS in Redwood City. They’d go to Harry’s Hof Brau afterwards.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:25 pm

yeah. I could go on and on about how bad he is. I usually am working during his time spot but listen when ever I’m not working. Can’t help it, I am a KNBR radio junkie. Anyway, he’s horrible. He thinks most people put premium gas in their car no matter what the car. Who thinks that?

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:31 pm

Yeah, there’s no end to his schmuckiness. I remember him saying that Warrior fans who were “real basketball fans” should be flipping the dial back and forth between the Warriors quest to win their 73rd game, and Kobe’s final game for the Lakers. That’s such a ludicrously ridiculous statement that you wonder what planet he’s on.

Interesting. Bochy says he’s mulling some lineup changes with speed guy (Nuñez) coming. Wouldn’t divulge. Wants to talk to players first.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:27 pm

Isn’t that interesting how Bochy usually says he’s going to talk to players before making changes? He doesn’t have to do that, but he does. He’s very big on communication; one of the reasons for such good clubhouse chemistry. And we rarely see players do acts of disrespect towards him because of it; Casilla being an exception that one time.

  64. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:52 pm

I am probably the outlier here but I have always liked Radnich. Of course I haven’t listened to him on a regular basis in about 20 years. I always enjoyed his schtick. He would say shit to people that no one else ever could or would. I always thought Dan Patrick was a poor mans version of Radnich. I don’t always want to hear a recap about the Giants game and why Bochy should have done this or that. Radnich never gave a fuck about that and I for one enjoyed his style which was a nice break for three of four hours in the middle of the day. I guess that schtick can get old but twenty years ago there was no one like him in sports talk radio. Today every major sports market has a sports talk host that tries to mix in pop culture, non sports comedy, but none of it ever works. Every once in a while I tune into him on IHeart radio and I still laugh my ass off.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 29, 2016 at 6:59 pm

Wow Joe! That’s my feelings about Radnich too. Of course, this is back when I heard him in the 1980s. I may have heard him a half dozen times since then, due to being out of the bay area.

Between only those two, it is a toss-up for me. I like Amici’s, but RT puts together some special pies sometimes that are pretty damned good.

But my absolute favorite pie ever is the Margherita at Hey Day Cafe here in Placerville. Best I have ever had, hands down, and I have ate a LOT of pizza in my 59 years.

But, it also depends on what I want. Sometimes I want a classic Chicago deep dish, and Zelda’s in Sacramento does it as good as anyone. I first went there when going to Sac City College back in the early 80s. There are a few waitresses and bartenders there now, who worked there then. The pizza has not changed, either. The pies are cooked in these deep dishes that are black on the outside. Damned good pie!

Pizza Rock, downtown Sacramento has some great pizzas, too. Guy has won a number of international pizza awards.

Unc thx for posting Zappa, Muffin Man one of his classics.

Still don’t think much of Bruce as a hitter–low OB low BA. Honestly I think potential of Mac and Parker, who aren’t gonna cost anything, as hitters and overall players, outweighs renting him or paying him $15 mil plus per.

As a kid I used to listen to KNBR more than I watched TV. I would fall asleep at night listening to Sportsphone 68 with Dave Newhouse and wake up to Frank and Mike in the Morning. If you guys remember they used to do the Giants Replay during the Frank and Mike show the following morning. I called in and won that a couple times as a kid. Did the same for the Warriors replay once. When I got accepted into UT’s journalism school as a broadcast major it was a dream come true. I got to host a sports talk show for our student radio station which was an absolute blast. I quickly learned how competetive the industry would be so I never set my hopes on continuing into broadcasting as a career choice. I just enjoyed the hell out of it as long as I could while in college. Best days of my life.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 29, 2016 at 7:35 pm

Frank and Mike were classic, for decades. They used to interview Don Nelson once a week when he coached the Dubs the first time. One morning he was on the phone, out walking his dogs. All of a sudden, it went silent for a few seconds, and Frank Dill (probably) said, “hey, Nellie, what’s going on?” I don’t remember the dog’s name, so I’ll make one up here. Nellie said: “Sparky stopped and is taking a dump”…
