A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Phailing in Philly

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 3, 2016

Glad I didn’t have to watch any of that. I don’t understand why Philly’s record is so bad, every time I pay attention to them they play great. Some tweets floating around that Smith’s stuff looked very good, despite the results. Thoughts?

Definitely some positives to take from the comeback, the bombs, the 2 SB’s from Span…..

Big start for Cueto. He’s been bad since the 2nd half re-start.

What a roller-coaster/clusterfuck of a game! I saw just the first inning (2-0) and dashed off to work-out. When I got back into my truck, it was 6-1. Then Craw and Belt brought us back, and with that late-inning lead, I thought a win was in the mix. Enter Strickland. I have been a proponent, and still am, but fuck, we MUST be able to shut-down a game like that.

I gave-up and went to do other things once Philly took the lead. Fucking frustrating!

Deep breath. Big picture. Everything’s gonna be alright….

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2016 at 8:16 am

Yeah, missed the game as well, except for glances while eating dinner. Saw Pagan go deep to take the lead, then next time i looked up we were down 10-8 after Romo gave up a lame-ass single. Missed Smith.

The talk of the problems stemming from starting Bummie after the break is curious. They weren’t supposed to lead with their ace? I even get bumping Cueto a day as he pitched in the ASG. Not sure what they were supposed to do. Lead off with the bottom of the rotation?

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 3, 2016 at 8:19 am

I am not buying any of that, Charlie. Nonsense, IMO. Those types of changes would NOT translate into anything significantly different here. This team needs to get back to playing airtight fundamental ball, pitching well, and getting some breaks. They are often hitting the ball hard…just right at an opponent.

The answer to your last question Chuck is YES! They had a 7 or 8 game lead going in to play pitiful SanDiego. It was an opportunity to give our overworked (by today’s standards) big 2 a little extra time…

  3. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 3, 2016 at 8:17 am

Not that she isn’t hot, and maybe I am grasping at straws (4-12 since the break makes you do some crazy shit), but maybe we need an update of the BBOTD.

I am willing to try anything at this point. Voodoo, Black Magic, bust out my mojo, etc. Yes, even a BBOTD update…

    Sigh…

Strickland is what he is. If he can’t figure out how to keep the ball in the park at this point, fuck him. He’s really skating on thin ice at this point. How much longer can Bochy run him out there?

Tonite is rematch of Sunday game in SF late June. Giants slapped around Nola for 10 hits 5 runs and knocked him out in 4th. Giants won late 8-7, phightins played tough and then went to AZ and swept them 3 straight.
Cueto couldn’t hold 5-1 lead and left having given up 8 hits 2 walks 6 runs. Herrera lit him up for double and HR.
Wasn’t this the game tho where he got mad at the ump over non calls?

According to Pythagoras on B/R (where they have given up 99 more runs than they have scored), Phils should be 43-65, 6 games worse than their real record 49-59. Time to get that back closer to where it belongs.

Props to Sherps tho for keeping LA in second place and for gaining on them (!). Gotta wonder what would happen if that team swapped venues with Pads and played all year at sea level.

49 HRs hit last night overall in mlb. Noticed that Cishek got replaced as closer by M’s, and Street sent to the DL hopefully keeping him far away from Giants uni.
New Cards closer Oh gave up 3 run walk off bomb in Cincy to some guy I never heard of, Scott Schebler hitting .217.
Mac called out Abad giving up the late bomb to Cano for M’s W. Stuff happens to other pens too, just like to see Giants shut the phils down.

I should check in on Cards blog. Those guys did nothing at deadline, right? Even after Giants slide they are still 5 games better than Cards who are 9 back of Cubs and in dogfight for the WC. These guys won 100 games last year. If they were to miss playoffs entirely, I imagine heads would roll.

I stand by my theory of Bumgarner’s incredibly ill-advised post ASG start throwing the team out of whack. 10. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 3, 2016 at 10:11 am

It was just a fucked up night all together. It looked like the Phils must have been using a DH and we used Bum, who by the way, was over matched at the plate. Although it was ripped, I thought Pence should have had that Hernandez hit off of Smith. Romo looks like Frisbee golf might be in his near future. A fan gets tossed by the Ump for saying the Giants sucked, in Philly, but to top it off, he was right.
Yup, it had all the makings of an interleague game in an AL park.

If I had been a player in the Angels dugout and I watching fucking Dusty hand the game ball over to the departing pitcher I would have gotten pissed to shit and would have turned it into a rally cry for the team. In fact, Dusty is probably to blame for that world series loss for that stupid stunt plus choosing Hernandez to start Game 7.
But whatever it all worked out in the end. The 2010 teams was about a billion times more likable than the 2002 team. It’s just as well that 2010 was our *first*.

Well, not to be picky and maudlin, but a bunch of Giants fans that died in the interim probably didnt enjoy the wait til 2010. To me, the most egregious error was starting Livan in game 7. The entire team wanted Woody to start, as did the fan base. Bochy would never have started Livan in that situation. Total fail on Dusty, have no idea of Sabes role in that choice…

The Bums will push Maeda back by a day and plug some guy called Brock Stewart in as the starter tonight against the Sherpas. Stewart has been dominant at Triple-A this season with a 2.95 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 49:5 K:BB over 42.2 innings of work at Oklahoma City. Probably a rude awakening coming up in Kathmandu tonight.

A little bit of drama is brewing in Tampa. Just read this DFS excerpt:

UPDATE: Brad Miller was blindsided by the news that he will no longer be the everyday shortstop once the newly-acquired Matt Duffy (Achilles) is healthy, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. “Extremely disappointed,” Miller said. “Obviously, I’m a shortstop. I’ve been working hard and doing everything they ask and playing well there, and (Monday) was kind of a punch to the gut, them telling me he’s our shortstop now.”

ANALYSIS: Miller, who came over from the Mariners in the offseason, got off to a slow start in 2016 before considerably picking it up at the plate since mid-May. His 16 homers are a franchise record for shortstops, but his .959 fielding percentage currently ranks last in the majors at the position. Miller will reportedly move to first base, but could also see time in the outfield. Manager Kevin Cash was reportedly blunt with the 26-year-old when informing of the move, essentially telling him that the team had a better chance to win with Duffy at shortstop. However, the Rays’ boss also emphasized that Miller’s presence in the lineup is both valued and necessary. “We want Brad Miller in there every day,” Cash said. “He provides a huge offensive spark for us, and we’re not going to take away from that.”

Hey Blade, you may want to take a stab on starting Astros rookie RH Joe Musgrove against Texas on Sunday. He made his ML debut out of the bullpen last night (McCullers was removed early due to injury) and looked filthy against those Blue Jays sluggers. He struck out 8 in 4 1/3 and only gave up one hit and one walk. Seeing how Bundy did against Texas last night, I expect a similar performance from Musgrove but with even greater K potential.

Figured I would give you a tip since you helped me win money last week with the Dahl suggestion.

I could live with that for one year. Sign Reddick to maybe 5 years $75 mill if that is in the ballpark and Pagan as main backup and with you on Nunie being super utility with Specs. I could see Nunie being the starter at 3rd and Panda backing up and then when Nunie plays some short and second, Panda gets some starts.

Arroyo, as I speculated when we made the Duffy deal, is likely the future for us on the near term. I see him playing one year at AAA Sactown and hopefully starting for us in 2018, which conveniently will be Nunie’s free agent year…

I just want to chime in on Flavor’s 10:52 post. I read the last part with some incredulity. The 2002 team wasn’t likable? No offense, Flav, but who gives a fuck? I loved that team. They were edgy, contentious and supremely talented. Offensively they were arguably the best lineup in S.F. Giants history, they played great D, had clutch pitching and were fun to watch.

I was seriously busted up when they let that Series slip away. All those years of heartache and coming up short looked to be over. Then the collapse, which I don’t blame so much on Baker’s stunt as the bullpen just not getting it done. Nen was probably throwing with a toasted arm and was done soon after that, basically sacrificing his health trying to the get the Giants the title. The up and down Felix picked a bad time to be down.

Was Dusty’s stunt a factor? Maybe. Does Reuter win the game ?. Maybe. He did have a knack for coming up big in big games. But I think when you lose a game 6 in the manner the Giants did, you’re already done. It was horrible and no one can tell me that it didn’t affect the players. I think that’s what killed them, that and some career meatball named Scott Spiezio. What a piece of shit. A popup that somehow got out.

So much of baseball lies between the ears and the G’s had the rug ripped out from underneath them in game 6. They never recovered.

Likable was nowhere on the list of things I cared about that season. It’s easily the most disappointment I’ve ever felt in my life as an obsessed, die-hard Giants fan. 2010 absolutely eased the pain of all the years of not getting there and has made other disappointments easier to deal with, but it did nothing to diminish the 2002 team.

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 3, 2016 at 6:34 pm

I am in agreement…once they lost Gane 6..they were done.

Same thing with the 2010 playoffs when they lose Game 3 in 16 innings at the NY Mets and THEN Dusty has someone named Livan Hernandez pitching Game 4. Series was over by just him getting that start…

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on August 3, 2016 at 6:36 pm

I loved JT Snow! … Amongst others, but JT was an incredible 1st baseman … What a glove!

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on August 3, 2016 at 6:41 pm

Yup, Lisle, one of my faves also and he turned himself into a pretty damn good hitter too. Great Giant.

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on August 3, 2016 at 6:52 pm

If you throw out the fact that they lost the World Series, that 2002 team was far superior to any of our recent WS winning clubs. Not even close, IMHO. The difference: Bochy > Dusty.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 3, 2016 at 7:18 pm

Wow, I think the pitching staffs of 2010 and 2012 were far superior to 2002, WJ…

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on August 3, 2016 at 7:30 pm

I don’t know Loo. I would agree they were better but that 2002 staff was gritty as hell. There is no comparison offensively, 2002 wins hands down. But the coaching staff on the last three teams, specifically Boch is the difference maker. You just can’t quantify how much better Bochy was/is in terms of strategy

  38. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on August 3, 2016 at 6:16 pm

The way Panik is and has been hitting, I’m wondering if the Giants thought about dealing him over Duffy. Arroyo, if he ends up being the guy, could play second as well as third.

We know that except for Law, the Bullpen sucked shit last night. But why the hell did Bochy continue running Cueto out there after he gave up the two single-shots in the 7th. Then he kept him in with the two baserunners in the 8th and then to face Franco, their best hitter. WTF? Is Bighead a bit addled from the heat and humiliated relatives in Phithy?

Disagree about Franco Carstie, Herrera is their best hitter easily, e.g., WAR is more than twice as good as Franco (2.4 to 1.0).

Glad to see Panik finally catching some crap on here. Lucky for him, he doesn’t have gray hair and a weird batting stance, or he would really hear about it from the natives.
Fun Fact: Joe Musgrove also went to my son’s high school. That place is a fricking pitcher factory with Musgrove, Brault (Pirate rooke), AJ Griffin all coming out of there in recent years. Zito also started his high school career there and Kevin Correa went there too.
In LA now hanging with my son (not MapDawg) with no access to the game. Sounds like things are going well.
I agree that post about 2002 was epic. I was at Game 7 and i felt like dead man walking going into that stadium knowing we were gonna lose after the way Game 6 went down.
Loo: i can’t believe you didn’t share your Reggie Sanders take on the Spiezio homer earlier. Or am I getting that mixed up with something else? I think I was half in the bag when you were telling me that.
