A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Struggling For Motivation

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 13, 2016

Last night was the first game in a while where I had the time to watch the entire game and I only made it through about half the game. Boring. Lifeless. I can’t imagine how the fans felt and Kruk and Kuip must have been stretching their eyes across the park looking for *gamer babes* to trumpet.

I can’t watch Cain pitch anymore. That’s not the Matt Cain I knew.

I’m going into tonight with a + attitude but this LU just doesn’t jazz me up.

Span, Pagan, Belt, Posey, Crawford, Pence, Nunie, Panik. Of course, if any of those guys want to start hitting, maybe even turn it into a little competition between hitters, I am on board.

If we don’t win the NL West I am going to be as disappointed as I’ve ever been. Never has a division been so winnable.

From all appearances, it would seem that with MadBum on the hill, we have the advantage. I don’t know about that. Perhaps it’s this prolonged losing streak since the All Star break that has me worried. Or, it’s the fact that the Orioles are a team made to go against a lefty – Trumbo, Jones, Machado, Hardy, Pearce, Schoop – all righties and very good against lefties too, e.g., Pearce is 20-for-58 (.345 average) with five homers, 16 RBI and an 11:14 BB:K against left-handed pitching this season.

Weiters will probably sit because he needs a break after 6 games straight, but they’ll probably add Joseph to the mix (another righty). Only lefty playing will likely be Davis.

I think we’re going to get a good MadBum pitching game. What i’m worried about is that we also might get a good Gausman pitching game. When was the last time the Giants scored more than a run for Bumgarner?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 13, 2016 at 3:32 pm

A quick check . . . Other than the Aug 2nd game, where he lost 13-8 against the Phils, they scored zero for him in his last start against the Nats, where he lost 1-0 . . . Then the 3 previous starts (which he also lost) the Giants scored 1, 2, and 1 for him. So yeah, the scoring hasn’t been there, sans the the Aug. 2nd game.

Looks like Pearce is still not ready (elbow), so Reimhold (R) will replace him.

Seriously, if any of those guys want to start hitting….Lurie laid it out the same way.
You can DFA Blanco and Triple O but those aren’t the every day guys that need to get it going, individually and collectively. This is every day LU Bochy is counting on to pull their heads out, not the replacement players.

Um, Collins rant didn’t help his team much last night as powerful Pads put up a 9 spot and blasted 4 HRs off his SP. So what is your next move?
This is why I don’t believe in the fllp the spread approach to coaching, because if it doesn’t work you can’t get even more ballistic.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 13, 2016 at 6:21 pm

This is why baseball is the best sport…the intricacies to winning are a plethora of possibilities.

It all has to come together. A fired up coach trying to light a fire with a football or even a basketball team can fire up a team before a game or at half and their team can come out with their emotions on their sleeve and play with a different intensity. But that doesn’t work in baseball. The players can come out of the dugout with a “raaaaaaahhhhh” ferociousness and then face a no-name pitcher who they’ve never faced and that no-name can shut them down and they go meekly back into their dugout with an L…

Anyone listening to Orioles feed? Palmer has a real “I know it all” tone to everything he says that I find off-putting, but I do think he has good insight, especially regarding pitching–which obviously makes sense.
G-Head: shot a nice 45 on a big boy course this morning and played the full nine with one ball–very rare feat for me.
I did look up Jerramy Stevens’ rap sheet last night–yikes! That is one interesting couple. I guess they met at UW.
I think Panik is emerging from the wilderness.

yeah that started in Neuhisel’s program, and Stevens was hardly alone among UW football players in drawing attention (or lack thereof) of police.

Span driving in 3 of the last 4 runs we’ve scored is a fucking nail in our coffin. And I said the other day, I don’t hold Span responsible for this slide. I just don’t like Span for all the reasons I’ve already listed.

  12. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 13, 2016 at 7:27 pm

If Span batted any other place in the LU, I’d probably like him. I certainly wouldn’t target him. But my bias about the one hole is that you have to do something or somethings outstandingly. You don’t have to be Rickey Henderson, there is only one of him. Same with Billy Hamilton who has been an absolute monster lately. Nunie is the closest thing we have to a guy like this. And, frankly, that’s kinda sad……

Just for the record I was a huge Gaylord Perry fan. I watched him pitch several times in his Giants uni and he was tough as nails along with Juan Marichal to form quite a duo back in the late 60’s early 70’s.
Yeah he was hot-tempered along with Marichal but they just wanted perfection and with their star studded LU they usually got it!!
I was pissed off when they traded Perry for Sam 2 six packs McDowell who was past his prime exact for drinking..
Perry went on to win a Cy Young in Cleveland and added 170 plus wins after leaving the Giants, and he pitched his ass off never ever wanting to leave a game which I admire in these generation of “”PAMPERED”” pitchers!!

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on August 13, 2016 at 7:41 pm

The fact that Kuip doesn’t like him and was gonna do his best to be on the fringes of the ceremony actually is a positive thing for Perry in my book.
That’s cool Kat, that you remember watching him pitch for SF. The Steward article Loo posted was great and I am making my peace with his statue.

I think Giants issues with scoring runs have way less to do with who leads off than with what everyone else in the LU is doing, or in their case since AS break, not.
Aoki Pagan blanco led off last year and they had good offensive season near top of most offensive stats.

Lurie at 9 am on home Sundays does about a 1/2 hour with Wotus, with just baseball talk. It’s actually pretty interesting. The talk is about baseball technical – how to position outfielders, how to tell the 3rd and first baseman what pitch is called so they can be ready to re-position themselves a step or so allowing for a change-up or fastball, etc. Good solid baseball stuff that you can learn a thing or two. Wotus obviously knows his stuff, and he’s got a lot of stories, too. He says anytime a home grown guy gets traded (Duffy), not only the major league coaches and team feel it, but the whole organization, including the minor league coaches that coached him up the chain…

  49. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 14, 2016 at 10:15 am

Didn’t Wotus say that Arroyo projected as ml 3b? How far away is he I wonder—1 more year at Sac?
Would that mean Nunez takes over LF or RF if Pence can’t stay healthy?
What would you do with Mac and Parker?

  51. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 14, 2016 at 10:51 am

IDK if Wotus said that about Arroyo, but they’ve got him at 3b in Richmond, so that must mean something. I could definitely see Nunez take an OF spot, ultimately. He’s fast and very athletic, I think he has played some OF in the past, so he could easily take an OF position. Wouldn’t surprise me if that were really a long term consideration in the trade. As for Mac and Parker, they need to play. The Giants have one of the least productive OFs in MLB,. They should be in the mix for an OF spot next season. I suspect this shoulder thing with Mac was a DL call to be able to make some other moves; if he were a player with a big contract, I doubt he’d have gone on the DL..

In the off-season, Brett Anderson became one of the first players ever to accept a qualifying offer, for $16 million this season. He had an arm injury in the preseason, and today made his first appearance of the season, trying to give the Dodgers some value for the money spent. Pulled after one inning, though, and 5 earned runs.
McCarthy was pulled in the second inning yesterday with pain in his hip. Norris and Hill are currently on the DL. Kershaw is doubtful to return this season.

If you look up baseball injury in Webster’s Dictionary, Brett Anderson’s photo is along side the definition. Yeah, he’s one of the few players to accept a qualifying offer because he knows that he wont be around to do his job. lulz . . .

Let’s see if I can recall some of the injuries he had while with the Sherpas for 1 season – broken finger, back spasms, surgery to repair a herniated disk and a concussion I think. With the Snakes and A’s, he had a concussion, elbow tenderness (whatever the fuck that is), stress fracture in foot, TJ surgery, oblique strain, sprained ankle, etc.

I can’t even imagine this guy cutting frozen meat a la Affeldt.

Strickland got strike two with his slider. With his slider finally showing improvement lately, his ceiling has gotten higher.

Strickland’s stuff looked good today; I don’t know, I’ll never figure the guy out.

Not according to Krukow, who had no problem with the belt high fastball down the middle to Trumbo…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 14, 2016 at 4:02 pm

Yeah, Krukow was off his rocker on that.
