A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Back to 2014

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 18, 2017

Back to KC. Remember that night? Bumgarner. That crazy play with Blanco and Perez both fumbling Gordon’s hit. Panda shaking that big ass all over their foul ground….

Sometimes it feels like the magic ended that night. Like the baseball gods finally hit the stop button on that 5 year bask.

Cain going tonight. Is that for real? He’s listed as the SP so I have to assume he pitching. Yikes. We go from Bum’s herculean effort, a performance we will NEVER see again in baseball, to…..this?

Oh well. Gotta start somewhere. Two games in KC, then on to Nepal, then 4 against the Dodgers. At least we get them at home. The problem with that is that AT&T hasn’t felt like an advantage in years……

But that’s a lot of negativity that we don’t need right now. Instead, I turn back to 2014 and the the video I took alone in the dark in my car. Remember this moment?

    FUCK YEAH!

    Oh yes…I remember it well!

And for me, the bask will never be over. All I ever wanted was “A” world series win…but we got three in five years. That is dynasty-type shit…and I will ride mother until the cows come home.

I still think this team will right itself. Too early to be searching for ledges, IMO….

Awesome, great to hear another F-yeah. Kinda cool Bum goes tomorrow, the one guy Royals fans never want to see again.
As for Cain, no one seemed to think he’d win last week.

Just disagree on Bochy 100%. He’s not the one with a bat or a ball in his hands. Pitching hasn’t yet lived up to billing and I think the SPs are gonna mean a lot to Giants ultimate success, or failure.

He’s also not the GM that put the team together–he has 25 players to work with and has had to strategize without the best C in the league who also happens to have best offensive numbers (1.000+ OPS) on the team.

I can see some shuffling around coming with AAA guys up to replace the injured and underwhelming, but who plays where is anyone’s guess. Giants are just weirdly mismatched, too few OFs/too many IFs.

    • chipower9 said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:50 am

Good post, Willie. I agree with you on Bochy, although I do feel he has managed the BP differently over the last year or two. But overall, agree, this is not on him. I also agree with your comment on the SP, but feel the bullpen will also be key (last year is a glaring example of how important a quality bullpen is to a team’s success).

Stanford kid Austin Slater at .300 with 2 doubles 1 HR 10 Ks in 40 ABs for Sac.
Last year combined Richmond/Sac .400 OB. Hit13 HRs for Sac in 250 ABs, only5 for Richmond AA.

CF last 2 games for Sac btw, Stubbs bro.

So this is it: Evans went with kids/dumpster dive vets (Marrero Morse Hernandez Ruggiano) for LF and CF backup to Span while bringing in Hwang and Hill to ST, who are IFs and played very occasional LF. And he’s added more dumpster dive in Upton/Stubbs. Since none of it has worked very well so far, what is the next move?

  4. dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 18, 2017 at 10:03 am

I’d like to see Slater too but he’s not on the 40 man so it is not likely that he gets called up. My second choice would be Mac Williamson but he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

  5. djloo27 said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:15 am

Absolutely remember that incredible moment. I don’t think that was the official end of the magic, though. Gilaspie’s Citifield homer was a bolt of lightning from the heavens. The magic would end a few days later.
    We all know when…

  6. Bozo said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:23 am

Mac Williamson still seems to be dealing with the quad injury, not sure why it’s taking so long to heal up. Is it just me, or does it seem like Mac gets some sort of arm injury every year when he gets a shot?

    • chipower9 said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:54 am

      I agree. Glass V2.

  7. zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:45 am

I agree; too early to be on the ledge.

  8. Irish Kevin said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:48 am

I am with Chi on this, when the Giants lost the 2002 WS, I didn’t think I would see them win one in my lifetime, but low and behold I got to see 3 WS wins!!

  9. chipower9 said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:55 am

At some point, and I think the time is approaching soon, the team will need to do something about adding an OFer. None of the likely suspects are on the 40 man, so if it happens, it will probably necessitate a move there.

  10. zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 11:57 am

Pirates’ Starling Marte is suspended for 80 games for using a PED.

    • Bozo said, on April 18, 2017 at 12:36 pm

Dang, I guess that takes McCutchen off of the trading block…

      • willedav said, on April 18, 2017 at 1:05 pm

maybe, but ,maybe not if Pirates don’t contend. See if they still use someone else for CF and how that all works out for them.
Gal cam in store where I work last night headed to NO for meet up with friends Friday night, and then she said she’d stay on another week for the Jazz Fest. enjoy too my man.
        I’ll be in Portland.

      • Bozo said, on April 18, 2017 at 1:24 pm

Looking forward to it, Willie. We will be there for both weeks but we won’t be going into the festival all seven days this year. Still, I’m looking forward to some series NOLA hang time…

      • chipower9 said, on April 18, 2017 at 2:20 pm

Jealous as hell re: the Jazz and Heritage fest, and just some NOLA time in general. I have got to get back to that city. I have also been there before when the French Quarter fest was going down (smaller scale than the J&H, but a great festival with some incredible music talent). And then you have the food! Fuck…I am jonesing for some beignets, gumbo, red beans and rice…

        Have fun, brother!

      • Bozo said, on April 18, 2017 at 3:14 pm

        Will do, Chi.
BTW, FQ fest isn’t small anymore, I heard they had 700,000 people for it this year. According to a friend of ours, it was flat out nuts and very hard to get to all the stages.

  11. Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 12:20 pm

Pav: Giants say Bruce Bochy underwent a minor ablation procedure this morning to alleviate some discomfort. He will rejoin the team on Friday.

    • willedav said, on April 18, 2017 at 12:28 pm

Hmmnn. I’m sure last year wasn’t good for his health.
Wondered at time of his hiring about Nevin, who has experience as AAA mgr.

    • Bozo said, on April 18, 2017 at 12:43 pm

Bochy had that heart thing a couple of years ago in ST and wasn’t he also hospitalized for something last year?

      • Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 12:46 pm

The 62-year-old Bochy underwent a heart procedure in February 2015 to insert two stents and was hospitalized last summer with an undisclosed illness that forced him to miss a game in Miami.

  12. Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 12:46 pm

Wotus will be the manager for the K.C. games.

  13. alleykat69 said, on April 18, 2017 at 2:33 pm

If I was Bochy I would have major discomfort as well writing out who plays LF..

  14. zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 3:20 pm

Posey returns to the lineup tonight.

  15. unca_chuck said, on April 18, 2017 at 4:46 pm

Is Posey carching? If so he’s asking for another concussion with a ball off his mask.

    • zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:18 pm

      DH.

    Starling Marte on the juice:
“In this very difficult moment I apologize to my family, the Pittsburgh Pirates, my teammates, my fans, and baseball in general,” Marte said. “Neglect and lack of knowledge have led me to this mistake with the high price to pay of being away from the field that I enjoy and love so much. With much embarrassment and helplessness, I ask for forgiveness for unintentionally disrespecting so many people who have trusted in my work and have supported me so much. I promise to learn the lesson that this ordeal has left me. God bless you.”

“Lack of knowledge” ??? My ass, he HAD to have known what he was putting in his body. What a cop-out.

I have carefully selected Hunter Strickland as a new charge to be defended against any and all unreasonable Flap criticisms. While he does kinda look like a WWE performer who doesn’t comprehend that it’s theater, the disparity between his stats and reputation is remarkable. He’s a strong candidate for this year’s Fred Lewis award.

  18. Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:20 pm

    not a big Affeldt fan……

    • James said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:25 pm

He sounds like he dropped into the booth for an inning to say hello, and is now sticking around indefinitely.

      • zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:30 pm

        Great description.

      • Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:44 pm

        lol, perfect.

  19. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:51 pm

Affeldt has a lot of knowledge about baseball, pitching in particular, but he needs polish and better preparation. He may well improve if he sticks with it. He’s likable enough.

    • zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:17 pm

Yeah, he has potential. If he’s open to criticism he can get better.

  20. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 5:52 pm

Man, the younger Mondesi is built like a toothpick compared to his old man. That dude was a fireplug.

  21. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:05 pm

We need to go Willie Mays Hays on Denard Span. Every time he hits the ball in the air, he has to drop and knock out 20 pushups.

    • Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:22 pm

    Good thing for the DH.

  24. Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:22 pm

i already hate Affeldt. The word is not pronounced “exspecially”

  25. James said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:27 pm

The two seamer didn’t quite work there.

    • zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:33 pm

An HR from a guy just up from AAA.
I’m ready for Arroyo to get his shot.

      • James said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:35 pm

Yeah, they can afford to take a chance.

  26. James said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:32 pm

I wonder if the Royals would notice if SF left its Cain behind and took theirs.

  27. alleykat69 said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:35 pm

Cain showed the rook use screw around with your bling and you get the hook!
That was a nice pickoff and Cain made him look like an idiot..

    • Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:36 pm

I did appreciate Affeldt noticing that right away and commenting on it. That was good.

  28. Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:35 pm

So Loo, in case you missed it, not only are the Crawford’s running a gofundme for Jen Pippin but Affeldt had to pay for his own dinner when he went out with Crawford last night.
gofundme has made a surprise move and is now up to 38 grand…..

    • Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:48 pm

He might be here soon now that the Rangers game just ended.

      • Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:57 pm

  29. James said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:45 pm

All right, Affeldt with some smart commentary on Belt. 🙂

  30. Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:46 pm

Just started watching, sounds like Affeldt never shuts up.

    • Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:57 pm

he makes Kruk like a completely impartial broadcaster.

  31. alleykat69 said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:50 pm

Lol..Your right Macdog, he does have a motormouth with not much substance at times..

  32. James said, on April 18, 2017 at 6:55 pm

It’s hard to believe, but there’s actually some possibility that the Cainer isn’t washed up.

    • zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:04 pm

He was helped by the 410 centerfield, but yeah.

  33. alleykat69 said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:09 pm

If Cain keeps this up for a few more starts they can move Shark down to 5 which wouldn’t bother me at all..

  34. Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:13 pm

    Take a seat Marrero . . . in Sactown.

  35. Flavor said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:13 pm

    Marrero is so fucking bad.

  36. alleykat69 said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:14 pm

    WTF Marreo!!!
    You suck donkey dick!!
You have to fucking swing the bat there you moron, it doesn’t get any better then that pitch dickwad!!!!

  37. unca_chuck said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:14 pm

Jesus. Marrero has got to go.

  38. unca_chuck said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:16 pm

I wouldn’t even send Cain out here. Playing with fire. Well, the pen . . . ahhh leave him in.

  39. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:16 pm

That’s 2 of the worst fucking AB’s you’ll ever see in that situation. Span just sucks and Marrero takes a called strike 3. WTF.

  40. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:17 pm

It’s amazing how the most mediocre ballplayers can make millions of dollars basically just sucking.

  41. zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:18 pm

Our awesome leftfield/centerfield combo killed that rally.

  42. unca_chuck said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:19 pm

Cain getting Cained . . . 13 pitches in 2 innings. Shite. Throw him a fricking bone.

  43. Macdog said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:21 pm

Wow, throwback Cain start, including the low run support.

  44. James said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:21 pm

On offense, the Royals are by far the dumbest MLB team. I fucking hate them more than the Dodgers. It’s really too bad that they’ve seen any success.

  45. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:22 pm

Say what you want, myself included, but that’s 2 straight solid starts from Cain, tonight bordering on a gem. If he can just manage to continue to keep the team in games, he could really bolster the back end of the rotation.

  46. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:25 pm

James, how about we leave Span in KC, take their Cain, and hope they don’t notice? Right now Matt Cain is looking serviceable.

    • James said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:26 pm

Yep, that two seamer is moving . . . .

  47. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:27 pm

  51. Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:37 pm

That would’ve been a spectacular DP.

  52. zumiee said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:38 pm

James, did you enjoy KC’s bunt in this 8th inning? 🙂

    • James said, on April 18, 2017 at 8:06 pm

  53. unca_chuck said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:40 pm

Wow. Now we get the conga line of pitchers. Why doesn’t this usually work?

    • Lurker John said, on April 18, 2017 at 7:42 pm

Kontos got jobbed. That was a nice sequence.
