No More Rumors Just Gimmie The Facts

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 8, 2017

This is such an idiotic time of the year. We are bound to all these twitter rumors, swayed by hot tips from guys I’ve never heard of. Who is “Chris Mish?” And why don’t our own beat guys ever seem to break any news? Anyway, there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there.

If the Giants don’t get Stanton or Ohtani how realistic is JD Martinez? And who wants him at 250 mil?

How ’bout no one? Does that do anything for ya? The idea that the Giants know how to or will engage in a re-build is nonsense. They will never do that. Should they do it? Absolutely. But knowing how to do something and doing it are two totally different things.

Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic (not certain, but is this the Pee Wee Herman look alike short guy that use to work for Fox?) also reported “Stanton has cooled on the Giants and Cardinals.”

  3. blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:38 am

The “rebuild” isn’t necessarily about adding and subtracting players, as we our hamstring by 2 irrefutable facts: 1. All of our position players are old (exception of Panic); and, 2. These same players, with the exception of Panda, aren’t likely to be jettisoned due to onerous contracts. In other words, no one wants our players, nor are the Giants likely to DFA anyone.

So, if that’s someone’s idea of a rebuild, it’s not going to happen. What is happening (and I’m all for it), is that coaches are being hired, reshuffled to other positions; and behind the scenes, our front office & minor league system is being revamped. Definitely not exciting to the average fan.

In short, this explains the big PR attempted signing of Stanton and Ohtani – nothing more than a desperate attempt to keep fans coming through the turnstiles and buying garlic fries and crab sandwiches. All of this was explained by Snarkk, GH, myself, and others.

I agree that has been the sale on pursuit…they will make the same show for JD Martinez. I’m not paying hin $200 mill…I can see the Red Sox going there.

    • zumiee said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:47 am

We all knew it probably wasn’t going to happen. It was kind of fun to daydream for a few days.

  4. gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:43 am

My response to the latest news: FUCK YOU GIANCARLO!!!

Giants should immediately withdraw their offer (I fear now we dont get Ohtani either) and tell the Marlins we will gove you Arroyo, Beede, Stratton, Ramos and Shaw for Ozuna and Yelich!!! Cards cant match that…or would be unwilling…

Left field and right settled…Gorkys or Slater in CF (unless Ohtani surprises us…can he actually pick the Padres over the Giants???) and we have a much more secure financial future…

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:48 am

On top of it. Gianfucko saying he now will only approve a trade to Fodgers, Cubs, Yankees or Stros is a suck my dick moment in gianys history…I hope Jeter says ok dick wad…you stay and we trade everything else around you…including the kitchen sink.

      • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:57 am

Why the anger toward Stanton? I don’t care for him as a player (almost entirely due to his contract), but I respect his decision to favor other teams over ours. He earned that no trade clause in his contract and he has every right to go where he pleases. Equally important, he’s been very respectful of the teams wanting to trade for him.

      • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:24 am

No he hasnt Blade. He made the Giants junp through hoops to get a package on the table that the Marlins agreed with and they have been probably going back and forth for a month. And then all this week he has left the team and us fans hanging after their meeting on Monday. All the while he never intended to sign with the Giants..Fuck Him! It has all bren a game to end up in LA!!!

He and his team knew the rumors were abound that he wants to only play on the west coast. If that was not true, then why did they not say so publicly. Now the Friday before the GM meetings while the entire league has been waiting for him to decide and thay has put a standstill to nearly all potential deals, he then comes up with he will only approve a trade to the Fodgers, Yanks, Cubs or Stros???? Fuck him Blade. He has proven himself to be a prima donna that rhymes with witch…

  5. willedav said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:06 am

“secure financial future” for a team that drew fans extremely well in 98 L season and is owned by billionaires is least of my concerns.

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:32 am

WD…my point is that we wont be pissing $295 mill away and can use that much more productively. At least we can dream they can be much more productive with payroll.

But if you think Giant fans are going to turn out by 3 mill to watch the garbage that was on the field last year next year and beyond if they dont turn the team around, I think you are mistaken. Very mistaken. (Lool at the Niners!!) If they stand pat, I am predicting they will be closer to 2 mill in attendance.

Just ask the Flappers here that are back home. How many less games did Flav and others attend last year versus the previous year and goung back to 2010. I would bet the average Bay Area Flapper attended 4-6 less games last year than they did on average the previous 6-7 years…Giants ownership believes in making money and they are not going to sit by and watch attendance fall…

  6. gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:14 am

And in the also ran sweepstakes…Giants will end up trading for McCutchen to make a “big splash.” Then he will have a decent year and Giants will give him $100 mill for 5 unproductive years:(

  7. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:16 am

Who gives a fuck about the ‘valiant attempt’ to sign Stanton and/or Ohtani? Does that sell tickets? No. I get that it shows they are trying, but in the end they are tied to what they put on the field. And to lose both of these guys means that it WILL be someone like JD, who I think would be a nice little addition if it were not for the ginormous contract he’s gonna get as he rides on the coattails of S and O. This so reminds me of the Torii Hunter/Rowand/Andruw Jones scenario where Hunter was the prize, Jones (to me) was the booby prize, and Rowand was the outlier who flamed out spectacularly.

JD looks to be the next Rohand more than anything but what other options do they have? The Astros route? Play the kids to a 120 loss season? For 3 years? They ARE hamstrung by contracts that seemed like great ideas not that long ago, and the brass has proven already that the lux tax is a hard stop for them, so I guess we have to hope for improvement from all our old guys.

  8. willedav said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:30 am

I do think it’s possible to pry decent OFers away from some other teams overloaded at that position.
3b would be harder but there are FA options out there that won’t break bank.
Marlins of course do have other frontline players they would like to move that could help SF.
Span and Pence will be gone soon enough…fill in depth of talent around them.

    • unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:23 am

I hope so. I haven’t seen them accomplish anything similar in the Booby era though.

  9. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:22 am

Pence isn’t going anywhere. Too much marketing invested in him.

Span is a possibility but when do we simply cut guys loose?

  10. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:28 am

In the ‘FWIW’ category, another guy seems to think Ohtani lands with us. Whither Mike Whitener?

I think it’s been established that this *Chris Mish* guy has no fucking clue where Stanton is going.

  12. Flavor said, on December 8, 2017 at 10:00 am

the giants don’t have to worry about selling season tickets, at least not this year. I don’t see pursuing Stanton as a way to appease the season ticket holders. They are already re-upping. I don’t know a single season ticket holder that is bailing. Who do we have here that’s a season ticket holder? I think Dirt? Anyone else? I know a half dozen people that didn’t think twice about re-upping for next year.

    • Stan Shell said, on December 8, 2017 at 11:17 am

Maybe guys with nothing else to do with their money will re-up. People like me with “limited” (as opposed to unlimited funds) are not going to be sucking up beer and garlic fries like before. I have been purchasing the DTV BB package every year (~10 years) since it has been offered. Half way through last year I realized there were few SF players that I felt like sitting down and watching. This year I plan NOT to buy the package. If they get Ohtani or Stanton I likely to re-up. Otherwise, no.
I’m just some old retired guy and may not be typical of Bay Area fans, but I watched the Giants since they came to SF, went to a Candlestick game on the first day of my honeymoon, and have followed ever since. If I walk away from the Giants I think there will be many others similarly inclined.
I hope they either sign one or more of those guys or blow up the team down to the ground level and try a full blown re-build.

  13. dirtnrocksnomo said, on December 8, 2017 at 10:14 am

I do the season tickets with a large group and end up with 5-6 games a year. Otherwise I wouldn’t cough up the dough.

The inability to land Stanton is Booby’s incompetence imo. Nice guy? I don’t give a shit. Good father? Fuck you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here – close! Dude needs to go back to the Mitch and Murray school of business.

yes. The *no lefty* rule must be honored. Only exception is Ohtani but he’s probably no longer on the table either

  16. xoot said, on December 8, 2017 at 10:54 am

I really think what mlb needs is Stanton and Judge in the same OF. I just noticed that Judge had arthro shoulder surgery a couple of weeks back. He should be ok, though.

Stanton has no personal incentive to join the Giants; Barry Bonds did. Different era. Stanton’s desire to win now seems a bit mechanical. This isn’t the NBA. I guess it’ll be fun to beat him–occasionally.

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 11:14 am

Yanks are going to go all in next year for Harper, why would they make a move for Stanton??? They already have the exact same player in Judge..

Stros are not bothering to make a deal and Cubs have no incentive with all their youth needeing to eventually get paid to add Stanton. Hope he wallows in miami for the next 3 years…

We have all reiterated the them me for a few years that hitters just dont want to come here. Today was a cold slap in the face. Either build or trade to get hitters. Pitching no problem but Stanton rejecting us and the Cards beciase he just wants win now is moronic. Two storied franchises that have shown in last 20 years they are always going to be all-in to win (most of the time at least). To think neither will be playoff competitive for 3 years just shows he just wanted LA all along. We will destroy him and the Fodgers come 2021…and Fodgers still wont have won and watch Kershaw exercise his own opt out next year…

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 3:51 pm

And JD Martinez will use us just as stanton did to go elsewhere…Boston is my guess. We wont be players for Donaldson unless we can finagle a trade before trade deadline…watch us end up Frazier as well…

  32. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2017 at 4:01 pm

I don’t know GH. With Stanton, the Dogs would be hands-down the favorites. And rightly so. Like the Warriors getting KD. Until it happens though, I ain’t gonna sweat it. I wanted Ohtani anyways.

We will be forced to way overpay if we want to get anyone worth a damn what with our home run killing ballpark.

I think at some point they just may fuack with the OF walls to make it more HR friendly.

  33. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2017 at 4:08 pm

IOW, thanks for the leverage, but no thanks. I’m holding out for $400 mill from the Dogs.

  35. alleykat69 said, on December 8, 2017 at 4:36 pm

I’m ready to just start Shaw,Duggar&Slater now in the OF, get Down go’s Frazier at 3rd are Honky Man Moustakis, and a healthy reliable 1st basemen in Hosmer yeah their both Left handed hitters I get that but they produce and production is freakin’ needed with this sorry bunch.. Your OF is cheap, except the 2 colonoscopy candidates (Pence&Spam) who can ride the pine along with the “Human Postgame Spread Devourer”Panda ,who I’m sure they will keep just for no other reason then to sell the rest of his dumbshit Panda Hats!!!

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 4:50 pm

Please no Moustakis…he played well in a contract year. We need to build an offense aroumd a masher…but I am ready to buy into play all young players in OF with Arroyo at third and lose the 110 games and then move on with $80-$90 mill available in 2019.

Stanton and the Blue Nemesis planet are on a collision course. He grew up 15 miles from the Latrine. Let’s see, Puig or Stanton in RF, hmmm, that’s a tough one. They’ve got all the dough in the world. It makes too much sense, to me anyway…

  38. Lurker John said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:01 pm

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 6:19 pm

      Agreed

  39. snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:07 pm

Stanton could have told Jeter from the get go where he would and would not go. Knowing that, the Marlins played the field of suitors to gin up the offered packages with the competition. Now that the deals are all in, suddenly Stanton and the Marlins start turning down the teams Stanton never really had in his sights. He just didn’t suddenly figure out he didn’t want to come to SF, or he didn’t like garlic fries or his net takeaway with the higher CA tax rate. He’ll end up where he always wanted to go, and get maximum juice for the Marlins in return. The full no trade clause actually gave Marlins max leverage over the suitors, it wasn’t a burden. The black hole of knowledge over Stanton’s real desire was advantage Marlins over the suitors. If there were a limited no-trade, the suitors would have had knowledge of who the limited competition really was, so they would have had some reverse leverage. For the Marlins and Stanton to have handled this otherwise, given the full no-trade, would have been stupid. The Giants had no shot from the get go, and got played, as usual…

    • Flavor said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:15 pm

i’ll be very surprised if he ends up in LA. They don’t need him. And they can just wait for him to opt out in 2020. If he goes to LA I’ll tip my hat to whoever called it. LA isn’t desperate, they aren’t going to hand over a bunch of prospects for him and everything I’ve seen is that LA is looking to decrease spending. The Marlins can just keep him or send him to NY, Chi or Houston—if those offers are better than the half hearted one I expect from LA

  40. snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:38 pm

    You could be right BF.
But, what is Puig making – $7 million per?
Stanton is supposed to pulling down $25MM, $26MM, and $26MM the next three years thru 2020.
Swap those two, LA would be happy to get rid of Puig. Some team will jump at taking Puig and his whole deal off LA’s hands. Dodgers can eat whatever lux tax they finally end up paying, if any, after they make other roster moves. I think Dodgers don’t forget when Stanton clouted one over the LF pavillion a year or two ago, literally out of the ballpark. They’d gladly take more of that PR love, and they’ll pay the Lux Tax hit, IMO, to sell lots more Churros and Dodger Dogs. Ownership wants to continue to pound the Angels in the battle for marketing supremacy in the Southland…

    • Flavor said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:41 pm

yeah, the Puig swap is a concern. I honestly hadn’t thought of that. I try to think about Puig’s dumbass as little as possible.

      • zumiee said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:57 pm

Mattingly had rough times with Puig in LA. He’s got to be flipping out.

    • snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 5:46 pm

Hell, maybe Miami takes Puig, given his Cuban background that seems a PR plus move for Miami. His antics might play better over there, and pull a few butts into the stadium. And, if LA agrees to eat a couple mill of his deal, that is OK since that means LA gives up one fewer top minor leaguer to the Marlins…

Giants Among Teams Showing Interest In Domingo SantanaDecember 8th, 2017 at 6:43pm CST • By Jeff Todd

The Brewers are “getting hits” on quite a few outfielders, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). That includes Domingo Santana, who has been pursued by teams including the Gia

  42. gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 6:42 pm

Fodgers have no reason to give up anything of value to get Stanton because they can likely wait for him. Marlins dont have to accept getting nothing for Stanton. They will get a huge haul in trading Ozuna and Yelich as is and that chops about $18 mill of the $30 mill.

They could make up the remaining $12 mill trading Prado with eating half his salary and Strailly. Problem is no one will take Prado….except the desperate Giants! Would be a dream to get Ozuna and Yelich but if you could add Ozuna and Prado at half price, that is just an expected $17.5 mill and not the worst hit on luxury tax. What prospects would it take to make that deal happen? Arroyo or Ramos, Beede and Shaw? Add in Stratton? Thoughts?

Puig is not the answer when Mattingly is the manager.

    • gianthead said, on December 8, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Seems lile too many prospects, but Cards likely have better prospect package for Ozuna but not likely they would take Prado. I can see the Cards landing Longoria with Colome. They add Ozuna and may become favorites in the central…

    • snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:00 pm

  43. blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 6:46 pm

Are we all agreed that we’re passed this nonsense about Stanton and Ohtani? If so, are we ready for the rebuild? If that’s a yes, here’s the key bullet points:

    1. Trade everyone of any value, regardless of the bad publicity.

    2. Acquire diminished former top prospects and play them regularly.

    3. Trade for as many competitive balance picks and as much international cap space as you can.

    4. Have a preference for hitters in the draft.

    5. Try to extend early as many players as you can (the ones that seem to be good).

Here’s the details . . . Commence the wilderness years!

    • Flavor said, on December 8, 2017 at 6:54 pm

no. I’m not ready for this. Do you really honestly think those 6 bullet points are something Sabean and Evans have in their tool belt? They’d be absolutely firing blanks and darts and anything else that fell under the category of *complete luck*

      • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:48 pm

I was going to ask whoever she is, can she play LF?
But, after googling, since she’s a Faux news talking head, she can only play RF…

I don’t view it as a failure that the Giants front office couldn’t get Stanton and/or Ohtani; I’m guessing they made the best offers they could. Stanton narrowed his list to the 4 teams that played in the ALCS and NLCS. Clearly he wasn’t interested in going to baseball’s worst team over the past 1-1/2 seasons. I will, however, view the FO as a failure if they a) panic and overpay for a Martinez or b) show absolutely no imagination in building something new. There are some decent options left for them, but as we’ve all said, they’ll need more than one bright new shiny penny in the outfield. Would love to see some trades, but I don’t think anyone else wants any of SF’s current players. Here’s hoping there’s a really strong and viable Plan B. And likely Plan C, and D…

  46. zumiee said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:36 pm

Sabean has said they’re not going to do a tear-down type of rebuild. So we’ll see what tricks he has up his sleeve.
    (Spoiler alert: no major tricks)

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:48 pm

He’s done it before; Matt Williams…. even the Schmidt trade, and that White Sox trade that was fairly creative. But it’s been awhile. No faith that Evans has it in him, though.

      • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:03 pm

Agree (as I indicated in my 7:48pm post).

  47. blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 7:58 pm

Minimally, the front office needs to immediately jettison Bumgarner, while he’s still worth something.

Similarly, they need to get rid of these other expensive contracts before they become really putrid (Belt, Crawford, Posey, Smarge, Moore). Watching the franchise on life support isn’t an option IMO.

    • snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:10 pm

Totally agree. They should trade Bum for a handfull of high end A and AA players.
Giants will draw 3+ million ticket buyers in 2018 even if I were playing 2nd base. So, trading Bum isn’t going to cost them much in the pocketbook. Maybe when they are out of it in the middle of August onwards, 15%-20% of the ticket holders may not show, so they’ll lose concessions and parking. Eh, whatever. Point is Bum on the mound isn’t going to draw people in during a post-AS game fade. He isn’t Timmy; I don’t believe very many will decide to come or not based just on Bum being on the mound, if the team suxxx. Giving Bum a massive deal in 2 years is just not smart. Trade now while he has high value…

      • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:16 pm

I can even see the Giants waiting until the All Star break, where all the potential playoff teams will salivate at obtaining him (and potentially our other onerous contracts too). Obviously, the key is that he has to be playing good. Same goes for Belt, Crawford, Posey, etc. Strike while the iron is hot.

      • djloo27 said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:20 pm

I’d be very surprised to see Bum traded.
        Ever…

  48. blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:26 pm

The movie “The Revenant” is a great metaphor for the Giants current condition. A once proud trapper (Giants) has been mauled by a grizzly bear (the HR paradigm, where they didn’t get the memo).

They need to tend to their wounds and navigate out of the “wilderness,” where they can seek revenge on the varmints (NL teams) that left him for dead.

    Go Leonardo . . . umm, I mean Giants!

  49. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:27 pm

As much as it might make sense to us Flappers that the team should try to offload those players/contracts, I’m guessing the front office views it differently: as in, they love that “core” of players, they know it’s in its final years, and they want to plug some holes while the window of opportunity with that core is still open and they’ll worry about a re-build a couple years down the road. The question that’s debatable is, is that window really open. Or is there even still actually a window. When is a window not a window. When is a door not a door. Why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway. One fish two fish red fish blue fish.

    • zumiee said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:43 pm

The window is one of those sliding glass doors that is closed but somebody walks into and smashes their nose.

  51. zumiee said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:37 pm

And the rumor mill keeps churning:

    Jeff Passan
    @JeffPassan
Sources: Yankees making progress on a trade for Giancarlo Stanton. One source cautioned nothing done. Another was confident it’s moving toward that. Either way, momentum for Stanton to Yankees is significant.

    • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:43 pm

Actually, I think that trade happens. The fish will have to eat a big Yankees contract though (Ellsbury or the 3rd baseman – forgot his name – dude from the Padres).

The biggest issue is that the Yankees are already set in the outfield and they’re on record as not wanting to surpass the luxury tax.

    • djloo27 said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:44 pm

If that happens, it will cost $3,000.00 per game to sit behind the plate.
      It’s about half that now…

    • zumiee said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:52 pm

      Anybody but the Dodgers.

  52. snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 8:54 pm

Apparently none of these national baseball media “insiders” have a clue of what’s going on with this stuff. One day it’s X, the next day it’s Y. What the hell good is that? They must be just parroting what they get from agents and passing along rumors as real sources…

    • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:01 pm

Actually, Mish and Rosenthal called it regarding Stanton and the media was correct about Ohtani having the Angels on his radar.

      • snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:16 pm

Mish has been all over the map the last few weeks of this saga. If they are right at the very end, what’s the point?…

  53. djloo27 said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:22 pm

Maybe there’s a 3 team deal where the Giants would get Ozuna and unfortunately Ellsbury, the Yanks get Stanton and Smardja and the Marlins get some combination of young players from the Giants and Yanks…

    • snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:25 pm

Maybe the Giants can take the Marlin’s center field art monstrosity if they’ll take Gorkys…

    • blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2017 at 9:39 pm

I think the Marlins shot their load insofar as any leverage they might have had, after Stanton nixed the Cards and Giants.

Basically, they should be grateful if the Yankees eat most of Stanton’s contract. To me, it’s more likely that the Yankees will insist on a quid pro quo, with possibly Ellsbury.

Hey you guys I’m with 3 smoking hot babes right now at my local watering hole, and I have a better chance closing a deal then the Giants!!!

    • snarkk said, on December 8, 2017 at 10:00 pm

      Close the deal, Kat !
But, better make sure before you spend a lot of time and money that none of ’em are named Stanton.
And, if any are named Mike or Giancarlo, you’re on your own…

  55. djloo27 said, on December 8, 2017 at 10:12 pm

Right now I’m leaning to MLB radio only next season. Probably seen well over 2,000 Giant games since MLB Extra Innings package became available here in 2003. I’m worn down. Miller should have me sound asleep by 10:30 every night…

    • Macdog said, on December 8, 2017 at 10:38 pm

I’ve been able to get the MLB.tv package free through T-Mobile for the last couple of years, so even though it’s on the phone, ya can’t beat free.

      • zumiee said, on December 9, 2017 at 12:28 am

It amazes me, thinking back, how little of baseball I saw on TV as a kid. So much of following baseball was on the radio.

  56. blade3colorado said, on December 9, 2017 at 1:49 am

I hope we forget about Plan B (Lorenzo Cain or Mike Moustakas both come with a qualifying offer that would cost the Giants a pair of high draft picks). Sorry Sandog, that would be insane in my opinion . . . We need MORE draft picks, not less.

Same deal with Santana – we can’t afford the shit load of prospects which they’ll want. Besides, our prospects wouldn’t even cause the Brewers GM to even consider such a deal, much less even take Booby’s phone call. Again, a fools errand.

We have 1 life line – only 1 . . . Trade Bumgarner, Posey, Belt, Alphabet, and Crawford for prospects and bite the bullet on our journey through the wilderness years. Wake up Flappers! Embrace reality!

    CBS Sports agrees with me . . . https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/spurned-by-shohei-ohtani-and-giancarlo-stanton-giants-can-rebuild-in-a-big-way/
