Flavor Five Oh!
I’m turning 50 tomorrow. For some reason I used to always think I’d be bummed out about that. Who knows, still 24 hours to go. But as of right now, I feel great about it. There are reasons why I’m so positive but no reason to get into that in a baseball thread. Anyway, I will be in Reno/Tahoe for the rest of the week with people and probably won’t get to changing the thread. Unless something happens. But what’s going to happen? Likely, nothing. And I’ve got a second half century to start. So, later days.
Happy birthday Craig! I hope you are with family and friends on your special day.
It’s just a number in my opinion. Frankly, I never remember mine . . . except, for the fact that my mom loves to remind me. Hahaha . . . Anywho, have a blast!
Go Giants!
Happy new Year! Gal who is seamstress owns a shop across street from where I work. She grew up in Vietnam and remembers all the fireworks that used to scare family dogs. If you had more money that was way to show it then, by blasting off as big fireworks as possible from rooftops at New Years.
In Colorado at the moment. My mom and aunt (Mary – who helped out Pawlie with a room during our first World Series run in 2010) visited us in Saigon and I accompanied them back to California . . . Spent a few days in Bay Area and just got back here Sunday. Circadian cycle is all screwed up to say the least.
Lunar New Year is called Tet in Vietnam. Again, I missed it, as it peaks on February 16th (this year) and continues on for a couple of weeks. Biggest holiday in Vietnam and China, with most extended families being together, which is great if you are living in Saigon – it doesn’t become a ghost town, but compared to the normal population, it’s a welcome break from the hustle and bustle that normally occurs there.
OK so Red Sox get JDM, taking him few thousand miles further away from SF and into another league and division. Good.
Enjoy Flav. Guy I coach with likes Reno and might head up there next weekend in March after we finish b-ball tourney in Sac, depending on weather… btw, it’s supposed to be in low 30s today/tmw.
79 tomorrow in DC…WD.. so want to golf:(
Happy birthday, BF!
Happy Birthday Craig ππ
May the poker table be kind to you!
Sad to hear reports Cepeda not doing well. Great career in SF, averaged .311 with slash line .352/535.
’61 he hit 46 bombs and drove in 142 with .311, at the Stick no less. Overshadowed by Mays and Mac and didn’t have a positon to play, and ultimately traded away after he got hurt only to win MVP for Cards.
Used to show up to little league events in Sunnyvale, great with kids.
Welcome to the 50 Club!!! Exactly 50 as well…
I was about to weigh in on the Fergie singing of the national anthem and was about to comment that it struck me as a skit on SNL by Maya Rudolph…then I see this…
https://www.hulu.com/watch/124965
Never had seen that before and how perfect it is…so was Fergie doing her own send-up of Maya Rudolph??? If so, then it was brilliant…
Hey, life imitating art imitating life, or something like that.
Now hearing that Strickland met with Smoltz and they talked about how Smoltz threw his slider. That’s a far cry from Smoltz actually working with him on it in throwing sessions. That’s disappointing.
I don’t know if he has, but if I were Musclehead, I would do everything possible to talk or train with anybody to improve that slider, and get some kind of serviceable changeup or split. If he has, then it ain’t workin’, and it’s getting a little late. If he has not, then WTF not?…
We’re 3 1/2 years after the ’14 playoffs, and we’re still talking about the same things regarding Strickland.
It makes you wonder how committed he is to improving. Maybe he figures, hey, I’m having a major league career. It’s all good.
Stricknine’s not what you’d call a thinkin feller
Old Yeller had more brains then that Sticknine feller..
Strickland looking like an idiot, trying to fight off teammates to get back into the brawl.

Great photo.
Pence with the cap askew is awesome…
Happy Birthday, BF !! …
Happy birthday Craig!! Welcome the 2nd half!
please let the Giants sign this guy. Right handed power, one of the best names in the game, I’ve always had a prem on this guy doing something at the mlb level. Let’s give him a chance! Why not, who’s with me!
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/yankees-designate-jabari-blash-for-assignment.html
thanks for the bday wishes, guys. 50 is great, I have no idea why people bitch and moan about this birthday.
only team he can hit against is Giants.
Um Zips projections underneath Blade’s post seem way overblown, unless they’re talking AAA ball.
Who was that guy Giants had in OF couple years ago, great athlete but couldn’t recognize or hit breaking ball?
Only lasted couple months…
Justin Maxwell mayhaps?
yeah that was him, had to look it up.
Blash owned us.
Agree. With the cannon fodder we have for a bench, this guy is worth a look. ZIPS projected 25 home runs, 70 RBI, 61 Runs and +1.2 WAR in 448 PA for this guy.
Here’s his profile from July . . . https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/jabari-blash-mikie-mahtook-deep-league-wire/
Happy big Fifty, Big Flavor. Hope you get at least one massive skink on and a huge run at the tables.
Justin Maxwell from 2015. Struck out 76 times in 250 ABs, hit 7 bombs BA .209 OPS .616 when Giants let him go.
Jabari Blash is a cool name. my godson’s little brother, half Japanese from Dad’s side, is getting married soon to Filipina gal. I told him Akira JaVale Deshon would be cool soulful name for first born son. We were doing this at Xmas, coming up with fun names…he said the gal wasn’t too keen on it.
2016, Pagan hit .277 with 12 bombs and a .750 OPS in his last season here playing LF. Don’t think anyone has come close to that since.
Looking at Blash game logs last year, he wound up 11-45 vs. Giants with 2 HRs/2 doubles, which works out to .422 slugging. One series in July he went 5-12 with HR and 3 rbis.
He did only hit .213 but started his season off 0-20, not easy hole to climb out of with few ABs. MLBTR column comments pretty funny. He is 28 yr old “prospect” but Giants have couple of those too.
Happy Hawaii 5-0, Craig!
Leaving Vegas right now. Not much time to gamble, won a little at blackjack (single deck), but what blew me away is the sports books have tha Giants as t 7:1 to win the pennant and 10:1 for the series. WTF? Vegas has more faith than me?
that is utterly ridiculous. I saw 25-1 online yesterday and that seemed shitty. Hopping on a plane in a couple hours, will check the sports book in Reno at the Silver Leg to see if they’re offering better than 10 to fucking one.
Thanks for the bday shout, Chuck (and everyone else)
Every place I checked (Bellagio’s, The Venetian, Caesar’s Palace, and the place in Henderson that we were staying (M) all had 7:1 and 10:1. Unbelievable.
Happy 50th, Flav!
Have a good one, Flavor.
50 didn’t freak me out.
Neither did 60.
18 was the only one I really cared about…
Happy Semicentury, Magnus! Let the good times roll — and the good cards, dice, etc. Wring everything out of this day. We’re all happy for ya, and grateful for The Flap.
What he said. Best of everything on your next 50.
Crazy. Online I see 12:1 for the pennant and 25:1 on the series for the Gyros.
Even these seem generous.
They should be 12-1 to finish .500…
Blash to the Halos…
Happy Birthday Flav! May all your cards be suited connectors.
Cepeda in critical condition…
Please don’t die…

last night a local tv sports reporter, guy who grew up here in the 60s, was almost in tears as he described what he’d learned from inside contacts about the ICU situation
Looks like mum’s the word on what I can see online about the Baby Bull. A cardiac issue coupled with a reported fall and head injury. Neither is sounding good. Hope he pulls out of this. I think Stretch is 80, too, and Mays is 86 or thereabouts…
Ibanez indicated last night that Cepeda had been intubated and that the machine was breathing for him
Not good…
He died in 2014…

My mentor buddy who grew up in Italian Temescal district of Oakland knew Ernie Broglio from nearby Berkeley. He’d won 18 games for STL year before they traded him to Cubs for Lou Brock, and then fell apart and only won 7 games in 3 yrs with ERA 2 full runs higher than in Cards days.
Broglio is still alive too.
Broglio’s a helluva name
The Italian national anthem is pretty damn good…
Worth singing loudly along to.
Funny, I made a crack to Mrs. James that the bellowing skier was a likely Berlusconi supporter. On our last trip to Italy, we stayed in beautiful Gargnano. Wandering around town, we came across: https://www.stripes.com/travel/lake-garda-mussolini-slept-here-for-2-000-a-night-would-you-1.289627
“One reviewer said sheβd wondered if any hotel could be worth so much money, and found that it could. She reported a βfirst-hand experience of the lost, gilded worldβ where she enjoyed βspine-tingling daydreams of Daniel Craig climbing out of the lake in a frogman suitβ and impeccable, friendly service.”
I haven’t see the Craig-as-Bond films. I lost track of the Bond films a long time ago. But I remember Craig being very good in the British action film “Layer Cake.”
Exciting finish to the women’s hockey final. Grueling game.
yeah tremendous deke goal to win shootout and great save by US goalie vs. gal that had scored on her in first round.
Indeed it was, great competition with evenly matched teams. And players giving it their all.
Sore loser, ha ha.
yeah they were none too happy to get Silver medal. watched from about second period on through anthem and raising flag, Canada gals still in tears at that time, maybe 15 minutes after it was over. Comments on other sites said Americans were the same way after 2014. Not anymore!
Read part of a long book on “Five Families” about Sicilian mobs of NYC by S Raab. He puts lot of blame on their rise here on Mussolini, who cracked down on Sicilians after being publicly embarrassed when he visited there.
There was a big battle going on in Castellamare btw rivals, and after M decided to send in waves of crime enforcers and jail many mob guys, quite a few decided to come and hang with friends/cohorts in NYC.
This also coincided with prohibition laws passed here, which turned into gold mine for Mafia and enabled them to take over and expand operations vs. Jewish and Irish gangs.
Book also says Meyer Lansky only a bit player/businessman who cooperated with Mafia and never was a threat, unlike as portrayed in Godfather movie.
Also lends credence to theory Mob boss from Miami Santo Trafficante and New Orleans boss Marcello in on JFK assassination. Mob bosses very disappointed in vigilance of Robt. K going after them/Trafficante lost millions in Cuba after Castro takeover. JFK had to go.
My political hero, Giuliani took on his own kind. They never touched him…
With a wink and a nod . . .
Pirates get Corey Dickerson in trade with Rays.
They were completely justified in doing it….the ’72 U.S. men’s basketball team never showed up to the ceremony to collect their silver medals after having gotten ripped off in the championship game. So those silver medals are still sitting somewhere in a box in Olympic custody. As we all remember, the Russians were allowed to have three tries on a full-court ally-oop play at the end of the game because the game-clock malfunctioned twice at the end. The third ally-oop try worked and the Russians were given the win. One of the bitterest endings to a game ever. The U.S. team wanted to protest and didn’t want to give the Russians those extra tries at the end, but were told if they didn’t stay on the court, they would forfeit the game.
Not even counting the fact the Russian team was a pro team, and the U.S. was using only college players in those days.
Still remember that game. Like the hockey games back then, it was a seasoned Soviet pro team against the US college players. The US hockey win in 1980 was a bigger shock than the basketball US basketball loss, as the US was totally jobbed in ’72..
Damm them Russkies!!
Atleast the women prevailed in hockey for the gold. But why canβt they go in to OT instead of the lame shootout??
They did play an entire sudden death overtime period. After that period was scoreless, it went to a shoot-out.
Long lost interview with Babe Ruth. Some cool audio clips.

This is pure gold . . . I’m struck by his speech pattern, e.g., always starting off with “Well, . . .” Additionally, the photo of his granddaughter is a spitting image. Thanks for sharing Dirt.
Just noticed my time stamp . . . Jet lag is killing me. I think I have averaged 3-4 hours of sleep since I got back to the World on the 14th. Ugh.
Yeah, a very strong resemblance.
The granddaughter.
The Giants start their ST games today. ST games aren’t riveting, but I find interest in them. Supposedly Duggar starts in today’s game. Lots of sub guys are starting today. Blach is the starting pitcher.
MLB Network starts their big schedule of games today.
ST games can scratch the itch a little bit of wanting to see some baseball.
McCutchen is in the starting lineup today.

Interesting graphic and article . . . http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22544678/while-mlb-goes-young-here-why-giants-doubling-players-their-30s

2008 17,756 25,938
2009 17,665 26,075

2015 15,181 28,541
2016 16,388 27,309
2017 16,376 27,364
That second sentence says it all tho–no way Giants are “punting on contention”. A lot of teams are, and some like A’s have been for a while. Sure they have tons of young players but they’ve finished last 3 yrs in a row.
No interest in going there.
If Giants had better young players I’d feel different about off season, but they don’t–other than Slater they all sucked, so they brought in some solid vets to fill OF, 3b, and pen. And they did go after Stanton, who turned them down..
idk how much Giants can really put on the Duggar kid in ST. Didn’t Marrero hit like 9 HRs there last year?
And then he got to face seasoned mlb pitchers and was awful. This is not uncommon—kids get off to hot start, league figures them out, stats plummet, he gets sent down, yada yada
props to Monmouth Hawks for knocking off league leading Rider last night.
Too much intense college b-ball going on for me to get fired up about ST right now. Local HS section playoffs going on too, kids I’ve coached still playing plus guys who are now coaching teams too.
MU is starting to get healthy, the biggest one being senior guard Micah Seaborn, who has missed much of the season but is now back and scored 30 last night. The Hawks also have had some brutal losses — 4 OT vs. Penn, OT at UConn, a last-second loss to Hofstra on a game-winning shot off an intentionally missed Hofstra free throw. The MAAC tourney is coming up, MU has been the heavy favorite the last two seasons but couldn’t win it. Now they won’t have that pressure, so maybe they can make a run.
Big NCAA scandal coming.
You know why the schools don’t want to pay their “student athletes”?
They know they already get paid by agents, not to mention the usual booster under the table stuff…Big NCAA scandal coming.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/22553502/fbi-probe-corruption-reveals-basketball-powers-broken-ncaa-rules
The NCAA president lashing out and saying “we need answers” is laughable to the Nth degree.
Like Selig disavowing knowledge of any steroid problem in baseball. For 15 fucking years.
Criminy, what a joke.
Kentucky fanatics are following this closely. So far, they’re convinced KY is ok.
https://www.aseaofblue.com/2018/2/23/17044138/bam-adebayo-nerlens-noel-kevin-knox-named-in-yahoo-report-what-you-need-to-know
Ruth used a 54 oz bat? Damn.. That is some very cool stuff, Dirt.
The NCAA uses the verb “evacuate” when a team has to give up a championship. Louisville had to evacuate its men’s basketball championship from a few years ago.
Pav tweeted a lineup, so he we go:
Duggar CF
Tomlinson SS
McCutchen RF
Sandoval 1B
Hundley C
Parker DH
Slater LF
Gomez 2B
Calixte 3B
Blach LHP
He also said Ryder Jones was set to start at 1B but he tweaked his hammy, and that Pence wanted to play but got scratched due to a stiff neck.
Pence out already may be a portent of things to come. Guess the coffee isn’t helping the neck. Hopefully Slater and Duggar aren’t Mac and Parker redux…
I feel like a slacker fan. Very disappointed in myself. Here I am still in Phoenix and thought I’d go up to Scottsdale to check things out, but I’m running out of time here and also don’t feel like dealing with the crowds, parking, etc. Oh well. Maybe next time.
Go to a Gyros game at another venue. Might be less hassle, better parking. Street parking east of Scottsdale stadium is actually not bad if you get there early enough…
So far this month my wife has put Chris Stratton, Kelby Tomlinson, and Hunter Strickland into temporary housing. I can go and do the follow-up for one of these and meet one of these guys, I’m leaning towards Kelby.
From what the woman at the building where Strickland lives said, Strickland is one of the nicest guys she’s met.
Let’s see a photo of you and Specs !!
Dude needs to head north with the 25…
Duggar hit a 2b, Hundley an HR.
What’s the score? My MLB app is not working.
Sounded like Pablo played good 1B and hit an impressive bomb. Miller really got into the adio pelota call.
We back to the Belt platoon?
Pablo can only hit LH, I think. No platoon.
No,Panda
will backup Belt& Longo Maybe a 3rd emergency Catcher and balances the bench by sitting in the middle of it to keep it from tipping..
Brewers ahead 6-5 the last I heard.
good game from some the players who started for the Giants, ugly sounding defensive from non-rosters Hanson and d’Arnaud toward the end.
Kemp hit an HR for the Dodgers. That’s kind of an interesting situation for him. They’d probably love for him to have a great ST so they can trade him again.
The Giant/Dodger game tomorrow is on the MLB Network at 5:00 PM Pacific Time.
Never understood Pablo at 1b. He throws RH, isn’t very tall or especially mobile, doesn’t have long arms.
And oh yeah, sucks hitting RH. This imo is just Bochy trying to find an excuse to keep him on roster.
MLB Network’s “30 Clubs in 30 Days” features the Giants today. Nothing Earth-shattering in the interviews with the players. Bochy said he’s not sure at the moment who the leadoff hitter will be, but said he’s leaning towards Cutch batting 3rd.
Sounds like cf will get a big shot at leadoff. Not a shock.
Cutch at leadoff is a dumb idea, IMO. You can put a guy with some power at leadoff, like Ricky, if you’ve got plenty of pop elsewhere in the LU. If you don’t, I don’t see it. Should not even be worth a minute’s consideration…
slightly odd interview on the channel 2 news about 1/2 hour ago. The same sports reporter who had info on Orlando Cepeda early on talked to Juan Marichal, who flew here to visit the hospital. Marichal, on camera, said Cepeda responded to his voice–eyes opened, hand squeezed slightly–which apparently was a suprising improvement.
Is curling the strangest sport on planet Earth? Well, maybe not stranger than dead goat polo in Afghanistan.
A couple of drunks in Canada must have invented it over a long weekend of drinking near some iced-over lake…
Oops, just Wickied it. Right idea, wrong country.
It was a bunch of drunks in Scotland in the 1500s on Scottish frozen lakes (lochs)β¦
It’s beyond stupid that Posey won’t be hitting 3rd. Should have been for quite a while now.
Giants’ split-squad lineup vs. the Dodgers today:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DWz7v3tVAAA5o7S?format=jpg
Blanco AND Calixte! Dare to dream.
I’m afraid that Blanco has compromising photos on Bochy…
Blanco leadoff triple — and doesn’t score.
Utley took 3 straight strikes from Stratton.
Kat’s guy Broxton HR-ed off Ohtani.
Giants 4, Dodgers 0 so far.
Hacktor goes yard!
Mac goes yard.
It’s only a ST game, but it’s still fun to pound the Dodgers.
2 runners on, Belt called out on strikes. The epitome of how Belt frustrates Giants fans in spite of his good qualities.
Someone needs to turn that Crawford impersonation of Belt “sometimes it’s a take” clip into a GIF.
Then Parker strikes out. But he just sucks.
This is Williamson’s last best chance to get on the 25, stay healthy, and see what he can do. His stony glove doesn’t help, unless he’s improved that somewhat at this late date. I doubt he’ll make it to the 25, I think he’s a ST player, ultimately a top out at AAAA quality. I like the guy’s uber power, but that isn’t consistent. And, he can’t seem to stay healthy for an extended period…
Jensen goes yard! (who?)
This spring’s Marrero or Ruggiano…
9-3 victory. Yay.
Was listening to some Tim Flannery songs on YouTube. He’s “meh” at best. As much as I like some of the songs he covers, he really is no better than most singer-songwriter types that you will see at an Austin bar during a Tuesday evening happy hour. It’s cool that he has had the opportunity to play with guys like Bob Weir and Jerry Jeff Walker, but quite frankly, I would be pissed if I paid to see Bob Weir and he let’s Flannery sing lead on a song like “Friend of the Devil.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:San_Francisco_Giants_roster
He hit an HR today, but I don’t see much point in Hector back. The guy should not be catching, he’s had too many concussions, IMO. Anyway, Hundley is the back up, so unless he’s hurt, Hector isn’t #2. And, he can’t play anything else. If he’s just getting in shape for a stay with Sac, well, Ok. Or, maybe he’s showcasing to hook on with somebody else as a #2. But, I doubt that…
I still think that if not for all of these mass shootings, Stix might be a free man today…
Ironically Stix doesn’t believe some of the mass shootings actually happened. He believes Sandy Hook was faked.
And. JFK was not assassinated, he was abducted by aliens…
Parker went 0-4, struck out twice today, and played shoddy defense. He’s 29, supposedly in his prime. He just doesn’t improve. There is no prime.
I thought the Giants were going split squad today. I guess not.
Isaiah Thomas is on the Lakers now. OK.
May or may not be a big deal.
“There is no target date for Seager to resume play at shortstop. He continues a throwing program after rehabbing a late-season elbow injury and choosing not to undergo surgery.”
