Today Was a Good Day
Remember that poem Chi used to post about some dude staring out the window waiting for something to stop or start or some shit? It’s just like that, baby…
Everyone is something. Maybe you’re a father, a brother, a husband…An American. A vocation…..a Giants fan.
There’s great history in being one of those. It’s why you give that stranger a knowing dude head nod as your hats cross in the street. It’s why you came here today.
We get another opening day today but of course I’ve thought about our old friend Twinner who misses his first one in 60 years. And Stix is still on the 3-6 year DL. He’s as “day to day” as it gets, eh?
The team is in an impossibly tough situation to start the year and things could look bleak if you choose that take. Me? I’m as positive as a motherfucker. I don’t know where this is coming from. Maybe complacency has set in due to those 3 beauties. Maybe I have fantasy baseball to distract me from the tunnel vision of a single team’s fan hood. Maybe I’m just getting older and don’t have it in me to complain about something I have no control over. You know what I have total control over?…..my attitude.
And I choose to be 100% positive about this team, this day and the rest of this year. Kinda feels like I’m channeling my *inner Twinner*, dig?
This is how I am approaching impending DOOM of the Giants season…I spent a couple hours last night prepping my Fan Duel picks and doing a Yahoo money league fantasy draft….my lineup is loaded. I got Posey with my 6th pick and took Strickland with my last pick. Is he getting named the closer for Melanoma???
Real baseball finally.
Read in Chron today that there is a book coming out “Felipe Alou: My Baseball Journey” with P Kerasotis. Long overdue.
Man, Rusty Staub dead at 73. I always liked “Le Grand Orange.” RIP
Opening Day, boys!
Hilarious post Flav! Happy Opening Day flappers!
thx to Mac/Loo for boxscores on previous. in MIl game 4 shutout innings from pen back of Bum. Pagan steals a bag and gets an assist and Giants smack 4 HRs…none of this sounds real.
The other one featured some epic names too including Pete Happy on the Stros and Uribe at 2b.
Speaking of boxscore stats, former scrub NBA C Scott Hastings named one after himself “the trillion.” Look at NBA box and first number is minutes, then followed by all zeroes for FG/FGA FT/FTA reb O-T. ast Fouls points
The other night Warriors back up from G league Damian Jones had a 5 trillion–5 minutes played and all 0s.
Flav, your posts have been on another level this week! Thanks for keeping it going brother. Happy opening flappers!
Just reading the OC Register. SF Giants have the 2nd highest payroll in baseball. Ouch.
Boston SF Cubs Dodgers. Nats Angels Yankees. Lowest Yankees have been since 1992!
I say we win today 3-2. Kershaw has a tummy ache from the sewage leak at Dodger stadium. Reminds him of his nervous tummy before he gave up 6 runs and blew the big lead his team gave him in the WS game 5.
Dude, there is some dispute on how that is calculated. The Giants are under the cap and not therefore 2nd highest overall…but still top 5…
Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw 93-0 with 4+ Runs of Support ..
A Dodger Nation press release from last year…Opps 93-1 now:)
The Dodgers haven’t won a World Series since 1988, but they are going to commemorate the 30th anniversary of that miracle today. Didn’t someone else say that they are going to have a pre-game ceremony celebrating their pennant win from last season? Who does that? Answer – only the Rockies . . . as I recall them putting a banner on the left field wall denoting their Wild Card win in the late 90s. Kept it there for about a half dozen years until the fan complaints became too loud. I find that hilarious.
Also, this is the 12th season opener between the clubs since they moved west in 1958. The Giants are 6-5 in the previous 11.
They are having their pathetic ring ceremony before Saturday’s game
Ahh. Thanks Flav.
Man, it seems like more than 12.
I didn’t know that Hunter Strickland added a slider to his repertoire. Apparently, it was taught to him by John Smoltz. Oh, and like Kat noted in the previous thread, I’m definitely down with him taking over the closing duties from Melanoma.
If anyone hears what they announce re Melanoma, please post. Will be in meetings most of day till 3ish…danke..
I didn’t know you were playing Fan Duel GH, along with Flavor and Wilco. I miss playing it. Unfortunately, Fan Duel and Draft Kings wont allow me to play in Vietnam. Equally important, it’s almost impossible to play with the 14 hour time zone difference. When I was living here in Colorado, it was a good diversion after the markets closed at 2pm.
I have not done Fan Duel I think in 2 years…
i like FanDuel better because you only need 1 pitcher. Having said that, I am only playing at DK today because that’s where my acct is loaded up from some nice NBA scores this year.
I thought he already had one. Just not a very good one. lol
The way the knucklehead has pitched in the past, I thought he only had two pitches – a fastball and a slower fastball. Seriously though, he gets a bad rap for the bombs and the reality is somewhat in between, as his ERA and WHIP has for the most part, been outstanding.
He just seems to implode at the worst times. He can be dominant. A serviceable slider would be a boon for him.
The sewage spill is a dark portend for the the upcoming Flodger season…
I thought the same thing.
Speaking of Twin I talked to a gal yesterday who was at Tue night game and met up with Andres Torres, sitting down below her and bf. Is he still part of the organization?
One of the guys I was thinking about in connection to last thread re: Giants endless doomed search for RH pop OFs was Brett Pill.
Brett Pill, a true AAAA player. I saw him hit a few big time bombs when the Griz visited the Tacoma Rainiers.
Do you live there or in the area now LJ?
The other day he said he’s been in Puget Sound for 35 years.
He must be soaked…
JR Phillips reborn
no gloves. No armor. Just a man and some wood.
Very sad news, and a bittersweet way to start the season for Mets fans.
El Con Man Melanoma is officially on the DL now.
I’m looking forward to this season mainly because baseball is back. All’s right w the world when baseball is on every day, at least closer to it. Plus, Giants can’t possibly be as bad as last year. Scoring should be up substantially, even allowing for DL stints for Cutch and Longo and pence. Staff is a jumble, looks like trouble with the rotation. At best, they’ll be in the WC2 hunt, but even if short of that, they’ll be competitive. Still basking in the 3 of 5, though getting dimmer. Like the explorer space probe nearing the edge of our Giants solar system– the solar wind is there, but weakening slightly every day heading towards the border of interstellar baseball space…
“We get another opening day today but of course I’ve thought about our old friend Twinner who misses his first one in 60 years”
Shedding a few. Can’t help it…
he’ll watch the game somewhere. The ironic thing is he’s probably got a cleaner view of the game than our pal Stix who’s fighting Brutus for the remote….
How about these splits:
.336 BA .435 OB .696 Slg 1.131 OPS
That would be Cutch last year vs. LHP. Um, hope he brings some of that to Dodger rotation.
Slow start to last season….244 in April/.206 in May left him at .223. Then .400 June on way to decent season. Giants I don’t think can afford him to get off to that slow a start. Even if it’s only for a year, look forward to watching him play here.
Awesome. Happ hits the first pitch of the season for an HR. Launch angle ball!
Jeter looks sharp in his suit, though.
Ahh Opening Day Flappers!!
Even if it’s in a stench place like Chavez Latrinre..
Hope they cleaned up their shit from their wretched sewage system that forced them to call off their game against the Angels the other night lol 😂
Roberts’ manager office got flooded with sewage. That’s kind of funny.
Marlin pitcher has hit 3 guys in the 1st inning.
Did I mention Jeter’s suit looks good?
Cards signed Greg Holland for $14 million. I’m curious how this will work out. He had 28 saves in 29 chances and a 1.62 ERA before the All-Star break. However, he struggled in the second half, going 2-5 and converting 13 of 16 save chances with a 6.38 ERA.
Giants against the wall due to the luxury tax, so obviously they weren’t going to sign him, regardless of Melanoma’s issues this spring. Sigh.
Oh but Evans said the Giants aren’t treating the luxury tax like a hard cap.
Saying stuff like that doesn’t help his credibility.
Evans has had quite a stint as Giants’ GM.
This is why I suck at fan duel…made my picks last night and then too busy to see the bloody Pirates game is rained out before the games start…
yeah, when you play the daily game you gotta stay on top of that shit till lock
I will go with the Cautiously optimistic on the first half while Bum and Smar are out. Then it will be full bore win it all attitude!
Alright enough of that crap, Let’s go Giants, let’s start the year by ruining the Dodgers opening day
Rizzo, HR
Jeter’s suit, stellar.
Well with all his payroll drops Jeter should rock nice suits with the extra coin saved.
His wife is dressed sharply, too.
They’re sitting next to each other with what looks like a lot of awkward silence.
Per McCovey Cove, we’re bringing up Reyes Moronta. Here is the scouting report:
“The right-handed Moronta was added to the 40-man roster this winter, despite having never pitched above Class-A, because he threw in the high-90s and joined the 100-mph club last year. Someone was going to take him in the Rule 5 draft because they would have figured he could survive in the majors. And, look at that, the Giants are hoping he can survive in the majors.
As you would expect from someone who throws hard, Moronta racks up strikeouts. The Giants took it very slow with him, keeping him in Rookie League until he was 22, and even then placing him in Low Class-A. A promotion to San Jose last year was the turning point in his career, and he struck out 93 batters in 59 innings. The control (3.2 BB/9 over the last two years) and command aren’t ideal yet, but he’s compensated with stuff.”
MC added, “Still, if he pitches more than 5 innings over this next week, you know the Giants are in trouble.”
Molina makes hit first mound visit for Cards. Mets announcers keeping count.
who was it K and K complained about so much last year? Grandal or the AZ guy?
Rule is how many visits now?
Daniel said something about hoping M Maddux helps Matheny game time decisions as Cards pitching coach. iirc, he always puts an arm around whomever he’s talking to out there, like he’s Ward Cleaver or something.
Two Marlin fans behind a dugout are wearing paper bags on their heads. A Marlin hit a triple and they jumped up and high-fived each other. That was hilarious.
Bag-heads celebrating is a funny visual.
Ha! Schwarber so sucks in leftfield.
Someone pointed out that, in game 7 of the World Series, McCann made six trips to the mound in the first inning. MLB had to do something.
Matt Duffy leading off for the Rays today vs Chris Sale. Giddy up.
The games do seem to have a better pace, IMO. Limiting mound visits may be a bigger deal than even realized. And batters might be wandering around a little less between pitches.
Check out Baggs hashtag, lqtm
3 lefties vs. Kershaw? Does that ever work?
Belt’s 5 for 50 vs. Kershaw. Why keep tying it?
But….Bochy’s old school: you have to start your A lineup on opening day.
3 for 51.
Yikes.
Happy Opening Day Flap Nation! Coming at you live from the Student Center at Sonoma State University.
Having dinner with my daughter tonight. She just made me a totally decent Taco Salad at the food place on campus where she works. Might head over to the town square at Sonoma proper to
have a drink at that bar on square I bet some of you know and watch the first few innings of the game.
Also have the golf sticks in car and can kill a few hours that way as well. Gotta catch up on some online stuff first, with this place being Stop #1. I like Law starting today. I believe in him and think he’s gonna be alright this year and have double digit wins. Slight chance I’m in the house for the game Saturday on my way home.
Blach, not Law of course–though i did think Ty Law was a helluva DB. Had a pick 6 in the SB IIRC.
Sonoma St., very nice! I was there for a summer conference in ’96. That whole area is nice. I’m especially fond of Jack London St. Park. Sonoma is very nice. Valley of the Moon.
The area had to survive some major fires this past year, though.
Stanton HR in his first Yanks AB.
What was Sterling’s call? I’m not a fan of the nicknames, but I’m curious what he’s going with.
Something in Italian that I had no idea what it was.
Nunie has hit an inside-the-park HR for the Red Sox.
He remains All Knowing.
I thought my recommendation was solid if not pretty obvious. “It is high, it is far, it is Gian”
Dude might hit 60+ this year. Smaller yard than in Miami and he doesn’t need much help.
I do still live in the Tacoma area, Blade.
I came very close to moving and living on Whidbey Island back in the mid-80s. Frequently was there for meetings, conferences, etc., related to my civil service Navy employment at Moffett Field. Love that area.
The islands in the area are awesome. The San Juans, in particular, are a lot of fun to visit. The ferry rides make it even more enjoyable.
It does get wet here, Loo, with fairly mild temps most of the year, though it can get plenty cold in the winter, with the odd snow storm. When it’s nice, there’s no more beautiful place.
Funny thing though, NYC has more annual rainfall than Seattle!
My father in law had a home in Anacortes overlooking the San Juan islands, just a gorgeous area in what they call a banana belt the rain is not heavy there. You hop on a ferry with your vehicle and then hit all the cool islands around their,Orcas Island,LopezIsland,Friday Harbor( camped there before) just a beautiful place to be..
Roberts is going outside the box a little bit, batting Hernandez 4th today.
Kemp makes the opening lineup; most people figured he was going to be traded by now.
Houston played 4 outfielders vs. Gallo. No infielder on the left side of the infield.
They did it for every one of his AB’s. He’s 0-4 with three fly ball outs and a strikeout. Bregman who became the 4th OF, caught two of them. Sure would be nice to see the Giants use that type of analytics.
Managers as autonomous as Bochy are a fading breed. The new managers are basically co-managers with front office personnel providing analytics and strong suggestions.
Right up until the hitter strokes a groundball through the left side, yeah.
He’s back! Recovered from the World Series loss?
Fully? Naw. But it’s opening day – couldn’t let you guys down. Got a big target taped on my back for you guys for Opening Day 2018! WooHoo!
Span hits a bases loaded triple vs. Boston.
LOL baseball.
4-2 Red Sox over T.B, bases loaded, two outs, Span up. Off the fence for a triple! Span scores on infield hit. WTF! 6-4 Devil Rays and still counting. I can’t remember Span clearing the bases all year last year.
OSF
Is he the DH? Keeping him out of the outfield?
Oh I just saw a clip of Nunie’s inside the park HR. Span helped cause it. He played leftfield.
#2 for Stanton.
The Yankees need to pick up one more strong starting pitcher and they are going to be even more of a force.
Watching the Angels fritter away a one-time 4-0 lead after 4 1/2 never gets old. Good to have baseball back.
A guy I picked in my DraftKings lineup today who I had never heard of has hit 3 homers today. Matt Davidson?
sure. Got him to. That team is up to 189 points and still going. Got him on another team that’s at 169. He played a lot last year I’m surprised you haven’t heard of him
Yeah, I don’t know why I have zero recollection of the guy….Damn 189 is a good score with more possiblly to come with these extra inning games. I am pretty happy with my 167 and counting.
my pitchers on that 189 team were Nola and Richards a grand total of 18 points, lol. Everyone hit on that team
Every time this Boog Powell kid comes up to bat for the A’s, I anticipate the feed to switch over to a grainy 1960’s version of baseball on TV.
Play ball!
first two hitters went well
1st half-inning went well.
of course, the third hitter….
A DP is not what I’m thinking Cutch wanted to start his Giants career with..
Blach’s a nibbler.
Nibbled his way out of trouble.
Wotus should’ve sent Pence. You don’t get that many chances against this dude, and with the bottom of the order following Belt…
Blach will be doing well to go five innings, at this rate.
Thank God for the twilight. I think it’s helping Blach.
Nice job getting out of trouble Ty.
So first fan duel I finished just out of the money with 3 position players not playing woth that Tiger-Pirates rainout.. mother…
I’ve got the Dodgers feed (boo) and they’re interviewing Magic Johnson . . . Just droning on and on.
Hmm . . . might be ESPN feed (just no K & K). Dunno – I pirated it. 🙂
Naw – that’s the ESPN feed – with Arod commenting and asking Magic the questions. Arod used to really bug me, but he has gotten better.
We cant keep getting runners on and letting Kerblow escape…as Belt swings through first pitch…and second pitch…
Why exactly was it a good idea penciling in the lineup Belt and Crawford back to back against Kershaw???
Struggling to score off Kershaw. Who saw that coming?
Seems like a real long time since Craw’s been a good hitter.
Joe Pa!
JOE!
Hey Joe!
One for Loo
First run, a dinger off Opie!
A’s came through in 11.
At’em ball to the rescue. Wooh!
Kershaw got the Glavine-sized plate that inning. There’s no chance when he’s getting a plate that big. The ump has loosened up his strikezone.
Will our reliever get the same strikezone?…..
Hosed on strike three to Hernandez.
Yes he was hosed. That pitch was right there, but nice inning by Osich.
Osich got four outs that inning.
The Dodgers picked up Chargois off the scrap heap. Unreal.
Gearrin is baseball torture.
That was a sweet strike 3, though.
Dud game from Longoria.
Grab some pine meat.
. . . You can blow your bat while you’re sitting.
