LA Bound
All I can say is, I hope our boys got some sleep on the plane. This is gonna be a tired group slogging out their today. But there will be electricity in the air and that can power them up a bit. I’m not expecting much. At least we have our ace going. If you’re playing daily fantasy I wouldn’t slur you for playing a Stripling or two……
Matt Harvey Day. He takes his 5.04 Cincy ERA out there tonight vs Pittsburgh. The silver lining for him is that the Pirates are unceremoniously the one team Harvey’s managed to cobble a quality start against. He’s made 14 starts this year.
The Reds don’t care about winning, this is just a stunt….
Fuck the Dodgers…
BEAT LA! BEAT LA! BEAT LA!
MLBTR says Longo expected to be put on the 10 day DL. so what is corresponding move? J Shea says maybe Belt, in time for tonite’s game.
Longo says break is in little different spot than Bum’s and since he isn’t an SP and it’s not on throwing hand, anticipates not being out near as long as bum was. Still, sucks.
Didn’t realize how well LA bats have come around. They are second in league for runs scored, tops in bombs with 86, 2nd doubles 4th OB 2nd slugging 3rd OPS.
Puig Taylor Grandal and Bellinger all at or just under .800 OPS, Kemp and Pederson (!) over .900.
And of course Turner back in the LU.
Saw the vid of Kemp trying to run over Rangers C the other day, which started brawl after he was tagged out.
Looking at SF-Mia box yesterday both Cs played entire game, so I guess no Posey tonite. Sure he’ll be in there to C Bum tmw.
And a journeyman named Muncy who has 13 HRs so far.
Nothing suspicious about how the Dodgers keep doing that.
Are you alluding to the possibility of PEDs? If so, I disagree. Basically, this guy’s Achilles’ heel is his fielding. This excerpt from this article (see below) explains why he hasn’t been given an opportunity, until now with the recent injury to Turner and poor performance of Bellinger (earlier in the season):
“After Muncy signed with Baylor, Steve Smith, the Bears’ coach back then, asked a pro scout where to play him. “I’ll never forget it,” Smith said. “The guy said ‘Put him as far away from the ball as you can.’ He had a bit of a reputation.”
In short, the Bums are just really good in having roster depth.
http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-dodgers-max-muncy-20180614-story.html
Longo’s injury (along with his HR yesterday), may be a reprieve for Mac the Oaf. Without it, I am sure Mac would have been the short man out when Belt returns (he has a option left).
This also probably translates to more time for Hanson. Will be interesting to see where he ends up at year’s end in relation to his previous numbers:
Three years. Best before this year was 2017 (spread across three clubs), where he hit .231, .276, .375, .651 in 160. AB.
Dude only has 319 ML ABs. They say 500 is the minimum to get a good read on a player’s potential. Let’s hope he can keep it going, as the Giants are going to need him while they continue to weather the injury storm.
The Dodgers are red hot right now, something like 19-6 in their last 25 games. In that stretch they’re averaging about 6 runs a game. Their bullpen has been lights out.
Their vulnerability is their starting pitching, but Stripling has been pitching great.
This could be a rough weekend, but who knows with the 2018 Giants, the Jeckyl and Hydes of baseball.
On the road they’re more like these guys:

I’m gonna guess it won’t be Belt tonight, but instead another RP to help out our “gassed” 13 man staff.
Oshitz, anyone?
Maybe Ray Black? He’s been rounding into form and lights up the radar gun. Just no Law
Did Oshitz give up on throwing left-handed? Working with Pablo on ambidexterity?
I think you’re right Loo, except it will be Pierce Johnson instead.
The Philly Eagles released photos of their championship ring early.

Here’s the 5 49er rings:

that’s awesome
And, of course, we never get tired of looking at these:

Great album by Flannery and his band, The Lunatic Fringe.
Not gonna need the pen tonight I have a gut feeling Madnum shuts them down 4-0!!
He’s pissed off from his last start/ejection so he’s taking it out on the Dogpile tonight..
That would be nice AK, except he isn’t pitching tonight. Holland is.
A classic meme.

This Longo injury is an opportunity for the Giants to make some needed changes in the outfield. Bring up either Slater (.355/.437/.574, 21 doubles, 30 RBI and eight stolen bases) or Duggar (.290/.362/.441, three triples, 21 doubles and 10 stolen bases). I am tired of Pence for reasons that need no explanation. Regarding Gorkys, the underlying statistics indicate that he’s going to revert to a hologram again. Additionally, I am tired of plays like this:
Knowing the Giants MO though (and as you guys have alluded to) they’ll go with someone like Pierce Johnson hoping to survive the streak of 17 games without a day off they’re currently only seven games into.
I like the old title rings better. They have a sense of individuality. These rings now look very similar, just change in the logos, pretty much. Probably because the same outfit makes then year to year…
I think the newer ones are too big to actually wear.
They probably just sit in vaults…
Kruk and Kuip wear ’em on occasion. Marty Lurie, too. Probably nobody wears em too much though. Could cause carpel tunnel…
great call
I believe Tiffany and Co. were commissioned for all three Giants rings.
Damm it Blade, I thought it was Bum
I retract my whole 9:00 post!
We’re gonna get clobbered now..😫
“clobbered”
I remember Joe Theisman saying how careful he had to be about scratching up car doors with the ring.
blade, I’d like to see Slater at a minimum. So far in 2018 he’s sustained .983 ops over 200 AAA abs.
When Slater was up last year, before getting hurt he definitely held his own at the plate, and showed flashes of pop. I see no baseball reason why he shouldn’t come up and be an OF choice. He should take he place of Actionless, but that won’t happen. If anybody goes it would be the Oaf unless he starts hitting more bombs …
Do you all realize that in about 40 years, we’ll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?
Where you been brother? Vietnam? We’re already there…😉
In Vietnam, you rarely see them because culturally they’re unacceptable, except on expats. Just strikes me funny.
Jackson actually hasn’t been all that bad on paper lately.
Since the second game of the 4/28 DH vs. LA he’s a respectable 21-73 (.288) raising his BA from .197 to .252.
He’s not leaving anytime soon…
1. Joe Panik (L) 2B

“Belt is here in LA. That might have been preplanned. But the guess here is, he’s active tonight if he checks out OK physically. Still have a potential pitching move, too, with Pierce Johnson here on taxi squad.
— Henry Schulman (@hankschulman) June 15, 2018”
Johnson? As I said earlier, I thought so. Ugh . . . When will we ever see Duggar or Slater?
So the Giants only have 3 bench players tonight. Am I understanding that correctly?
Schulman:
“Neither Johnson nor Belt know their fates right now.
4:57 PM · Jun 15, 2018”
Wow, how often do we ever go to Henry for breaking news?
lol, me? Never. He blocked me 3 years ago.
I don’t think you’ve missed much from him over those years.
Even on radio he seems often at least slightly aggravated or ready to verbally throw down on innocuous differences of opinion…
Yeah, his personality isn’t awesome; it’s like he’s unhappy with the way his career turned out. Maybe he once aspired to write novels or something.
My neighbor sells adult diapers.
Think that was his boyhood dream?
Schulman:
“Belt ready to play ball. Said he doesn’t want to play rehab games. Took ABs in extended spring yesterday. Most important, said he was high on drugs when he tweeted photo of himself on gurney.”
the Pirates are a completely worthless franchise. Fuck them.
Smarj is pitching for Sac tonight. Threw 20 pitches in a scoreless first inning.
Smarj’s game:

“Henry Schulman

#sfgiants gojng to activate either Belt or Johnson, depending on how relievers feel after throwing during BP. Belt will be back tomorrow latest.”
What do they do, huddle together and take a vote on how they feel?
Old friend Tommy Joseph is the DH tonight vs. Smarj.
After 2 innings, Smarj has 4 strikeouts.
It’s been so long since I lived regularly in the bay area, that I don’t have much of a connection to bay area sports writers the way I did with Purdy, Cohn, and Dickey. Sheesh, I remember when Purdy was young. Now, Kerry Crowley of the Mercury News looks like he’s in high school for christ sakes.
Anywho, this column might humanize Schulman a bit, as he’s had a fairly hard life – cancer, lost his father and almost his mother (again to cancer) during the Giants first Championship season in 2010. Also, both of his parents were in concentration and refugee camps. Dude will probably have to work for the rest of his life, since you don’t exactly choose writing for a newspaper to get rich . . . even back when he started out, his father thought he was making a mistake.
http://peninsulapress.com/2016/05/23/sportswriter-henry-schulman-san-francisco-chronicle/
Great article; thanks!
I chuckled at this part. It’s a very Ceres-esque reference. 🙂
“Schulman has come a long way since his first article with the Ceres Courier, a weekly in California’s Central Valley, with the headline “Broken Sprinkler Irks Neighbor.””
Fun fact, in high school I made a last second shot (a lay up, basically) to defeat Ceres High to win a tournament. My high school high point in basketball.
There were lots of low points unfortunately. 🙂
Yeah, I chuckled about that too. This one as well . . .
“Initially, they weren’t very supportive of him beginning a career in journalism, worried that it did not offer much of a paycheck. When they asked what he would fall back on, Schulman joked he could become a musician.”
Alex looks like the only one that’s passing on the garlic fries and hot dogs, eh?
Cool fun fact that he performed as a member of a high school marching band at a Niner Super Bowl.
Schulman’s ok. A bit excitable. He suffered through hell trying to cover Bonds after the Chronicle published the unlawfully leaked grand jury BALCO testimony, etc. In the clubhouse, Bonds either refused to talk to him or insulted him profusely. But when Bonds showed up on the HOF ballot, Henry was the first to say he’d vote for Barry. I liked that.
I didn’t know that about Bonds and him. Thanks for sharing.
oh, thanks for the thanks!
Hank is on a roll tonight:

Cueto threw his second bullpen. Staff will discuss next step. (Sim game? Minors). Can return in two weeks. #sfgiants

Reds did take out Harvey in 6th tho he had allowed only 1 run in 5, after he gave up 2 singles. So no Q-start.
Realize tho, his ERA with Reds is second best among all their SPs. And yes they don’t care about winning but I’d say seeing what he has in hardly a stunt, given how bad their pitching is.
And not that far behind Giants 5s guys, who are all btw. 4.35 and Smdrz at 6.56
they gave up Mesoroco, a good catcher who’s hit 5 bombs in 74 at bats for the Mets. They will regret that trade when all is said and done.
Mesoraco looks like he just stepped off a UFO…
Mes hit 14 bombs last year but also batted .213 with .711 OPS, nothing to write home about. this year when they traded him he was hitting .220 with .630 OPS.
Barnhart is younger guy without the injury history and probably not much worse.
It’s the Reds, who are gonna suck anyway—their pitching is terrible so I’m sure mets asked for Mes and they said OK. Sometimes change of scenery works out.
Smarj must have been on a tight pitch-count. Out after 3 innings, no runs allowed.
Pitt still sucks. Thankfully, Harvey got pulled and my lead widens over the great San Dawg
i guess it’s not really a widening lead although it feels like one. Drunk Harvey is done this year (and for his career)
Timmy turned 34 today.
speaking of guys who “…are done this year (and for his career).”
He was awful in AAA and Rangers released him. Needs to get on with rest of his life.
“My neighbor sells adult diapers.
Think that was his boyhood dream?”
I’m going to go out on a limb and say “no.”
Pierce Johnson wins tonight’s lottery and is on the roster tonight.
I wonder if we give the FO and field management too much credit for figuring out these roster moves. They look at all the permutations of moves over the next two weeks, consult the schedule, talk to trainers and docs, look at the oppo lineup possibilities the next few games, check possible matchups, options left, all that S, etc. Right?
Or, maybe it’s:
Q: Hey Gresch, how’s Belt?
A: “Well, he’s sorta OK, but he had a bad ham sandwich for lunch, he’s got the runs.”
Q: “Hmmm,,how’s Johnson?”
A: “He’s got a little biceps soreness, but since he sucks anyway, who can tell?”
“OK, tell Johnson he’s activated”.
“Oh, tell Belt to drink milk. And, if he’s sitting in the dugout tonight tell him to put on one of those diapers from Loo’s neighbor”…
“Giants waste a lead off double”
This is a recording…
Next up:
“Giants strand a pair”
Taylor has a straight uppercut swing. That really shouldn’t work.
shit shit shit shit!
Also trailing 1-0 in brush backs…
Even their pitchers can bunt better than ours.
Good job, Ace…
Interesting (and unknown to me) stat the Bum broadcaster just said – Craw has more RBIs than any other SS in the MLB since 2014. Pretty good when you consider his competition (Bogaerts, Correa, etc.).
Boom Boom . . . out go the lights. Fucking Kemp.
digging deep into Little Walter, huh? I was not surprised by the court’s antitrust ruling the other day, btw. I’ve been studying DOJ A/T actions for decades. (The first expert witness I ever examined on the stand back in early 93, in an A/T case, went to DC a month later to work in Clinton’s DOJ A/T Div.) The pendulum swings between republican and democratic administrations got very predictable over the years. This DOJ, so far, makes no sense to me.
You know something Xoot? I was actually thinking Pat Travers, but now you got me curious and I am going to listen to Little Walter’s original song tomorrow, as I’ve been listening to 1930s-1940s blues for the last few weeks (especially Delta Blues, e.g., Robert Johnson). Also, it is amazing how many of these songs were stolen by rock stars without appropriate attribution. I knew all this, but essentially ignored it. However, so many songs were ripped off, that it’s hard to ignore.
Regarding our DOJ, the only thing I have agreed with them with is the recent case they lost regarding AT&T’s buyout of Time Warner. A travesty for consumers in my opinion. I don’t have issues (ever) with the rank and file GS career employees . . . only the political appointees.
typically a new administration brings in a new regime for the DOJ A/T Division. Republican admins let shit slide; democratic admins try to protect (the myth of) competition. This DOJ is acting weird–and so far it’s certainly not acting like the Reagan or Bush DOJs, neither of which would’ve challenged the ATT merger.
“(the myth of) competition.”
True . . . I really try to insulate myself from the cacophony of “noise” coming out of the White House. It’s depressing. Our nation is in serious trouble and no one seems to care.
At least Holland is giving up solo shots…
Yeah snarkk, that’s like saying, “She’s an escort, not a street walker.” 🙂
And remind me again why Jackson was signed? Something about his defense prowess???
he was signed for what he did against left handed pitching last year.
Incredible…
Anyone know where to catch the game on TV?
Local NBC affiliate. Mine is Channel 31 in Sac.
Thanks. In the guide it was showing as Whose Line Is It….
How can this possibly be the same player who made that incredible catch at Fenway last year?
Well we can live with mistakes like that from Jackson since he’s bringing it so hard with his big stick….
Just jumped on lame-day, and Holland just got the hitter out with a knuckle-curve, allegedly.
The last several years the Dodgers have destroyed tomato cans like Holland.
By the by, anyone know why Rooster is still at dinner? Dessert? After dinner drinks?
He should be arriving any moment.
man, Marty Lurie doesn’t usually give it to the home team like this.
I think he had lunch with Cepeda today. Probably drank for two.
Holland pitches like the 6th inning is a rumor…
that’s our ace, show some respekt
he’s so baked right now
i just realized this tweet was from 2012
Hey, at least it wasn’t double doubles at In N Out
Oracle was absolutely against that diet…
I sometimes felt like TF would occasionally say something about Lincecum just to mess with us and stir something up.
I made the mistake once of accusing TF of trolling, and he went ballistic, of course. I never did that again.
Wasn’t there a major Twin War here over Timmy’s hamburger habit?
Snarkk pre-remembered…
Oh yeah, I remember it. I was one of the people he roasted pretty hard.
Wow, what a shit strike 3 call.
i dipped my toe back into my google archives looking for what Loo is talking about. Didn’t find it, this was the first thing that came up with Timmy’s name in it. I can’t reopen this door, there’s too much gold, I’ll get lost in it all night again, lol

So what’s the deal on posting this year? I’ve done a couple threads but it seems you really want to do them all, which is obviously your right. But I thought this”stable” deal was still going to happen. I don’t want to jump in if you are intending to make a new post, but there’s no way to know what’s up.
And I want to say one more thing about that BS about Krukow having no right to knock Timmy because Kruk has no CY awards-if I posted something so ignorant, you would jump my ass and never let up. You have a double standard on that stuff. Over the years I have consistently posted some of the most thoughtful, informative, and TRUE stuff on any sports blog. If some of what I say is critical of the brain dead comments like Kat’s the other day, too bad. I get more shit for truthful comments than anyone gets for nonsense.
Sounds a little like Drumpf…
The other day he said he heard from many many parents of Korean war MIAs that were grateful he got Kim to agree (he didn’t) to work hard to get their sons’ remains back. Trouble is, the war ended 65 years ago, so the parents of those MIAs have been DEAD for a while…
Today used to be the old trade deadline. Regardless of where they are in a few weeks, I don’t see the Giants doing anything…
I just looked at the standings, coupled with a few comments that the Bum broadcaster made – we can be in last place by the end of this trip to la la land. Padres playing well recently (won again tonight) and both the Sherpas and Snakes won.
Giants need to win at least one game in this series IMO.
actually I need to upload this email thread, it’s so perfect. Sorry in advance, but here goes….

Please don’t assume I would have jumped on you if you had said the same thing. It would have gone totally unnoticed by me, that coment couldn’t have been any less of a big deal.
Regarding the stable, I am gonna send out something to everyone soon. I’ve got an idea that should work for everyone. But I’m open to feedback. Give me a couple of days.

You jumped on legit opinions of mine all year last year-over and over. You harassed me about missed predictions, you harassed me on Belt, Lincecum, Zito, Crawford, Pagan, Dirrty…you were abusive and you never quit.
So can the fiction that you wouldn’t jumped me for what was a Brain-dead, stupid, comment like Kat’s. I expect to be treated fairly this year. Try to do that because I’m putting up with zero shit this year. If you can’t find a way to treat me right on the blog, just ban me from it just like you did because I asked for some respect for women. I still can’t believe that you think it’s amusing to make fun of unattractive women.
Your stuff went out, BTW.

If you care why I’m still pissed it’s because you took up Snarkk’s side against me again. To say he was referring to my lack of success as a MLB player is so incredibly dumb, it’s hard to believe even an 8 year old would buy it. It would *only* make sense if I had actually played MLB without success. He was insulting me as a person. I know it, he knows it, you know it. It’s just another example of your double standard.

I don’t think I’m dumb, but who knows. His comment read the way I read it and I told you what I thought he meant and, I’m not certain cause I only scanned his responses to you, but he appeared to indicate the same thing I thought he meant.
And I didn’t take a side. Re-read my comment. I said I was sending a warning to both benches. That means him and you. He didn’t post shit about it that day and you went on and on until I had to threaten to edit you.
It’s all there in black and white if you want to go re-read the facts of that time line.
I let your “try to be even handed for a change” comment go because you’ve had a hard time lately but that comment was so absurd it was hard to ignore.
“Try to be even handed”? Lets see, you brought the topic back up the next day on a new thread. You ignored my “warning” and kept posting shit till I ultimately had to threaten you with an edit. Snarkk didn’t post a single thing about it that morning. So if anything, I had giving him a warning about something he wasn’t even doing. He’s the one who should have complained about my “un-even handedness” of that warning.
And stop telling me about stuff I might have done or you would have expected me to do. I’m not spending a second on something as nebulous as conjecture.
I think he’s actually complimenting me somehow in there, or admitting that it could be taken that he wronged me. Sort of…
At least he didn’t call you odious.

On an On? two posts. Two posts that were righteous.. On and on is what what you pull.. I had every right to be insulted and and just because he later covered it up doesn’t make it right. Rest assured, if he if gives me shit again, I’ll respond in kind. And get this straight, I’ve done FAR more favors for you and your blog than you’ll ever do for me. .
BTW, how do you even have the fucking gall to call Torres “Vungo” after the shit you put me through on that?
Anyway, enjoy your Zito card. I’m sure he’ll give many more years of that great performance as last year. Hell, maybe they’ll win his last fourteen games if they give him 6 RPG again.

I posted a new thread that day to push the one of *you vs Snarkk* to the back burner. No harm, no foul. Still, you couldn’t stop yourself from bringing it up AGAIN first thing in the morning. Then I issue a warning to BOTH OF YOU. Then you bring it up again. Stop me if you think I missed Snarkk’s re-igniting of the argument the following day. Hmmmm, maybe that’s because he didn’t ever do that. In fact, no one said a single thing about it except you. It was all you the next day and you blatantly ignored my warnings by continuing on with it (and failed to leave it in the last thread after I posted a new thread). Had I not threatened to edit you, you and I both know you would have kept going had a SINGLE person, Snarkk or anyone else, referred to it.
So yeah, I had to bring up editing your posts but that’s cause YOU WERE THE ONLY ONE NOT RESPECTING WHAT I HAD ASKED FOR. The warning (after you brought it up again the next day) was sufficient for everyone else but you.
And don’t give me any of your “I’m not putting up with any sh!t this year.” Unless you think having a venomous post stay posted for a couple of minutes before I can edit it with a * is worth it. And the same goes for EVERYONE. If someone posts something over-the-top, it comes down. I just don’t always agree with you on what a *personal attack* is. I’m not moderating posts that you or anyone else thinks are over the top. I decide that for myself and I’ve always done it that way. And everyone, except you, thinks I do it better than sfgate or any other blog out there.
