A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Zach Attack

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 20, 2018

Zach Wheeler wants to be no one else in the world today. He’s done pretty well vs the Giants in his 4 career starts but today he’s plotting a total wipe out. He’s getting to face probably the worst offense in major league baseball. And, especially if you listen to San Dawg, Wheeler has turned a corner and is now an ace.

And now he gets a chance to blow away the team that traded him?

Tonight is going to be ugly, at least for us…..

Speaking of San Dawg, he sent me a pic of his AMPM meal from the other day. My favorite part: upper right, “Enjoy by 6pm”. Eat it, and eat it quickly…..There is a lot going on in this pic, feel free to comment on the highlights as you see them.

I actually like our chances against Wheeler. Mets have a worse record than us and they absolutely stink at home.

Or maybe I just like that Holland has been outstanding lately . . . He has held opponents to two runs or fewer in five of his past six starts. See if we can wash off the stench of our sweep by Cincy.

I’m kinda curious what exactly the “100% Natural” writing on the bag is referring to…. the lettuce? tomato? Man, there’s nothing like a great burger, but I’m not sure it matters how *natural* anything else is if the “meat” is from an AM/PM bag…. no offense …. haha, pun intended.

AMPM wars, lol. Used to live within couple blocks of 7-11, hit it up mostly for gatorade or coffee and doughnut. Coffee has gotten better over the years but still…otherwise it’s been years since I’ve had a doughnut. Used to hit up a family owned one east of San Jose St. on Santa Clara street that closed years ago.

Road Warrior SanDog obviously a man of adventure.

college football opening games getting ever closer. Stanford hosting San Diego St. less than 2 weeks away.

Watched most of Mets game last night, just to see new and improved MINAJ in action. At one point I think every hit they had was a single and they beat Philly at the LLWS yard which was pretty fun thing to watch.

All I’m saying about HRs, there are lots of ways to score runs and win games without them, including preventing the other guys from hitting them.

Question: How many HRs would a Giants team have to hit next year in order to be competitive “the way the game is played today?”

Regarding that burger, I was really in a rush so I didn’t put the time into plating and cinematography as I should have. I think I could have made it look a little better. I gotta say though that the taste was not great. If I had to give it a grade, I would have given it a D. The time “stamp” is definitely a new feature. They didn’t do that back in the day when I was putting those things away at Mercy Hospital in the middle of the night.

I’m still very much anti-tear down. Don’t think it can be done, don’t think it should be done. We gotta ham and egg it until 2021 and draft some hitters in the meantime.

Glad my man, San Dog doesn’t make this burger stop a regular habit anymore.

Me? I don’t eat fast food, unless it’s an emergency (long ass road trip and next stop is 175 miles or more for a rest stop/eatery).

Anyway, I trust my main man Prof. Beef and his esteemed assistant, Dr. Meat, before I sample any fast food fare. Unfortunately, as San Dog indicated – they agree this is one burger you only buy if all other food options aren’t available.

What’s the problem with a tear down and build up?
It won’t work? The FO doesn’t have the smarts or conviction to do it? (that one I might agree)
You’d rather watch 5 more years of pablum ball than 2 years of real crap and hopefully good ball after that?
I’ve been a fan since the late 60s. I can do another 2 years of crap ball easily. We’ve just had 2 seasons of it. So another 2 makes just 4. The ’70s and into the ’80s were a decade and half of that. 2004-2008 was a black hole. I’ve done hard Giants time. Lots of you have. 2 more years of it is nothing. 5 years and no end in sight, well, that’s getting towards my expiration date…

Bumgarner’s approaching 100 IP and at 1.296 is posting his highest WHIP since 2010, 3rd straight year of a rising hits and reduced Ks per 9 to go with a year over year increase in BB per 9. I don’t necessarily want to see it happen but the club needs to quit fooling themselves with the Mad-Bum is an ace narrative and seriously think about the value that can be gained with a move rather than resigning.

Willie, it seems like just talking about HRs is kind of a strawman argument. HRs are just part of the thing. It’s just hard-hit balls in general, and the Giants’ lack of them. Flappers were commenting accurately that other teams rip the ball into the corner far more than the Giants.
And hit the wall more than the Giants. It’s just such a stark comparison when you watch other games.
The other night Turner got a pitch inside and just kind of tomahawked it over the fence, as kind of an accidental HR. We don’t get to see anything like that as Giants fans.
Mac has that kind of power, but when will we see him at 100% again?

I think we are hindered by our astronomical contracts to even do a rebuild. Unless we eat Posey, Pence, Crawfsh, Smarlgebargle and Melonhead to the tune of $180 mill. Or $260 mill. Or whatever it is.

It physically can’t happen. If they can’t see to dumping Pence, they won’t dump anyone else.

  22. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 20, 2018 at 2:10 pm

Serious question. What would constitute a “tear-down?” And how does that happen?

Shipping Bum? That alone is not a tear-down.

Craw, Melatonin, and Posey all have full no trade clauses, so good luck moving any or all.

Smardj and Belt have limited trade clauses. So, a trade there is problematic, and who the duck wants Smardj at his inflated salary.

So really, how could you tear this thing down?

You can wish all ya want, but I just do not see it happening.

They have about $128K committed to next year. That does not include arbitration players, or our current FAs.

My guess is you want to resign Hundley (2.5 this year), and Holland (1.7 this year). Both will be free agents.

Smith (2.5 current), Dyson (4.2), and Panik (3.4), are arbitration eligible.

At last year’s salaries, the above are a little over 14 mil. Add Bum’s option of 12 mil, and that takes you to around $168 mil. If the spend rate is similar to this year, that means you have about 30-35 mil to chase free agents.

I hate to say it, but I don’t think you’ll see significant changes next year.

My pie-in-the-sky hope is for some determined creativity from the front office. What would the Dodgers do? What would the Red Sox do? What would the Cubs do?
Those three teams wouldn’t just keeping throwing a creaky old team on the field. Granted the ownership has to be all in, and unfortunately it seems the Giants ownership isn’t. The Red Sox are eating $40 million this season from Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez. It’s unthinkable of the Giants eating $40 million. Yet the Red Sox merely have the best record in baseball. They refuse to put a crappy player on the field just because the player is making a lot of money. The Red Sox ownership really gets it.
Oh, and the GM who signed Sandoval and HanRam? Fired.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 20, 2018 at 3:46 pm

The Red Sox also got a bit lucky with the Dodgers taking a lot of bad contracts off of their hands. If the Giants can find a team willing to do that, I bet they’d listen. And wasn’t Epstein a genius turned idiot with Boston before he became a genius again in Chicago? Just sayin…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2018 at 4:10 pm

Epstein got rid of all those horrible deals (A-Gon, Crawford but they lost Rizzo), and then went right back into signing those shitty (Hanram, Pablito) deals. My thought was, huh? Didn’t you just get out from under those kinds of deals?

Hubris must be strong in these GMs. Looking at Sabe’s track record, it’s all over the map. He hit paydirt in a big way through the late aughties, but lately the well has run dead dog dry.

It’s possible maybe that Craw and Posey would be interested in being traded to a contender, like the Braves.
It would probably hurt their feelings to be asked about it, but if presented to them in the right way, maybe they would be interested.

  28. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 20, 2018 at 5:03 pm

So let the AMPM burgers start flying at me (hold the tomato please, that thing looks like it would hurt) but here is my take on the Giants and “blowing up the team”.

This year the Giants gambled on staying below the luxury tax to reset their percentage from the 50% it is right now (the A’s love that money they currently get from the Yanks, Dodgers and SF etc…). And yeah, I know the percentage is based on the total over the taxable amount but as an example, I keep thinking of it like McCutchen’s $14 mil + contract costing us $21 mil + this year.

So I can see why the Giants took that gamble and at the start of the year, I was pretty happy with what they did, but it didn’t get us to the POs (although in my book, this team was way more fun to watch than last year’s group).

The Giants have 5 large contracts going until 2021 but next year they have 8 contacts totaling somewhere on the upside of $130 mil. Plus Bum has an option year ($12 mil?) which I imagine the Giants will go for. So that is over $140 mil for only 9 guys.
Not a great starting point for a .500 team but what to do? If you “blow up” the team, which of these guys do you think we can get rid of and what team do you think will take them? These salaries do not include bonuses:
    Posey – $22.2 full no-trade protection,
    Cueto – $21 mil,
    Melancon – $14 mil full no-trade protection,
Samardzija – $19.8 limited no-trade protection (may select eight clubs to which he will accept a trade),
Belt – $17.2 limited no-trade clause (Belt may block deals to 10 clubs annually each Nov. 1 starting in 2017),
    Crawford – $15.2 full no-trade protection,
Longoria – $14.7 assignment bonus of $2M if traded,
    Watson – $ 3.5
Bum – $12 option or $1.5 mil buyout.
I didn’t count Panda’s MLB minimum salary (thank you Red Sox) or the arb guys.
So who do you get rid of and how?

Ouch, dammit, I said hold the tomato.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 20, 2018 at 5:09 pm

i been trippin’ hard on that tomato all day, man. Just now I was staring at it trying to figure it out…..
I don’t think you can get rid of any of those guys easily. Maybe Watson, possibly Craw and Belt. Bum for sure but the return would be a deal breaker for Sabean. He’s gonna overvalue all these guys.

  32. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on August 20, 2018 at 6:16 pm

If I am the Atlanta Braves, a team that is probably ahead of schedule by 1-2 years, yet still has a legitimate chance to win a title this year, I think long and hard about pulling the trigger on an August 31st Buster Posey blockbuster trade. Attendance is way up for the first time in decades (yes, decades) in their shiny new ballpark and salary obligations are minimal. Your stating catcher right now is Kurt freaking Suzuki.

You could have one of the biggest names in baseball leading a young, up and coming pitching staff into the postseason. Better yet if he wins a couple World Series for you between now and 2021, you may see the hometown kid toss aside his Giants hat for a Braves one when he gives his HOF induction in Cooperstown. Yes his days at catcher are numbered but now isn’t the time to be worrying about that. If you’re the Braves, you’re paying for his proven ability to manage a young pitching staff in their first post season since 2010. Deciding where to play Buster Posey in a year or two is a problem worth having if your the Atlanta Braves, unfortunately it’s a headache for our SF Giants.

This is a trade the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers would pull off, but you won’t ever see it happen under the current regime.

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on August 20, 2018 at 6:26 pm

First the Giants would have to buy out Buster’s no trade clause. That might cost a few million right there. I have serious doubts he’d just waive it to play closer to home and go to the playoffs. Hell, he might even turn down offers to buy out his no trade. The bay area is a pretty damn nice place to live and raise a family if you’re filthy rich. Plus he’s got 3 rings already and he’s a legend in SF.
But, if you can somehow get past that, you still would have to pay a good chunk of his remaining salary and you’re gonna get literally nothing of value in return. Then you throw in the fact that you are going to totally piss off a chunk of your fan base, including me, by making that move. I just can’t see it happening.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on August 20, 2018 at 6:39 pm

The more salary relief the Giants give, the less they get in the form prospects and vice versa. Essentially if the Braves ageeed to take on the bulk of the contract, the Giants would basically just be getting a couple mid level prospects in return. The key is that the Braves currently do not have much salary commitment as most of their players are not even arb eligible. They may be the only team in baseball that could afford to take on his contract and it would actually make some sense if they did.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:12 pm

i’ve never been to NYC but this is how I imagine most NYers to look. No reason for it, this is just the image I have in my mind

Gotta love an extra inning game…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:11 pm

i’m impressed I’ve been able to watch an entire game. That’s been rare for me this year.

  48. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:17 pm

Since this game means absolutely nothing to no one, can’t we just call it a tie and move on?

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:20 pm

      Great suggestion.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:23 pm

come on Unca. Giants just need to go on a run and get right back in this. That’s what KNBR keeps telling us.

  50. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:23 pm

What’s the deal with this Rich Walts radio audition? He’s been cut from Marlins so he’s available?…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:24 pm

      that is exactly the deal.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:33 pm

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:37 pm

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:38 pm

Heard some of this Walts clown on the drive home tonight. He has an annoying habit of calling outside pitches “out” as in “the pitch is out” what the heck is that? Dude is also boring as hell.

  54. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:40 pm

Typical Giants bullshit. Exactly why they’re the worst fucking team w/RISP.

  55. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:42 pm

Didn’t Baggs also tweet something today about trading Belt for pitching? I like wilco’s proposal above. Mostly because Posey is a glaring weak link in the LU along with Panik smoking copious amounts of pole. It’ll never happen though. Especially if Posey’s hip is as bad as has been suggested.

  56. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:45 pm

he’s kinda like Oasis meets Counting Crows, thoughts?

  57. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 20, 2018 at 7:46 pm

If Posey has a really bad hip, whatever the ailment, why is he playing?
Fix it, if it can be fixed. Let it heal with plenty of offseason time.
Paying good money to see him play on 1 1/2 legs is bogus, IMO.
I assume the medicos say playing more won’t hurt it, but then, that’s the Giants medicos. I assume Posey is smart enough to have someone outside the Giants to look at the situation…

  61. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 20, 2018 at 8:20 pm

    New rule.
If both teams are 7 or more games out after August 15, the extra innings runner rule applies.
Each half inning starts with a guy on second.
For the Giants, they get special assistance — they get bases bases loaded at the start of their half innings…
