well, as FanGraphs noted they are bringing back 2014 with Pence and Sandoval as leading DH candidates.
I was trying to think up Opening Day LU. Longo would start if he wasn’t on IL, Belt absolutely would not because Opie owns him.

    Solano SS
    Yaz RF
    Flores 1b
Sandoval 3b (love to see Green if Longo out)
Pence DH (rotates with Ruf or Dick)
    Bart C
    Davis LF
    Dubon CF
    Sanchez 2b

I would like to see that infield with just Green at 3rd….

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 18, 2020 at 12:52 pm

Is this the line-up you WANT to see, or along the lines of what you think Kap will trot-out there? No way in hell we see Bart on Opening Day. IF we see him at all this year, it will probably be with two games left of the 60 (assuming we get that far), so as not to start his clock.

  2. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 18, 2020 at 8:35 am

Yeah unfortunately it’s “The Giants Way” with old washed up players with big contracts to keep running them out there. So nothing changes, the infield will still be the walking dead with Longo,Belt,Crawdaddy, and Panda as backup to keep the old dial meter high..

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 18, 2020 at 8:40 am

Next day vs. Buehler or other RHP Dick is in LF Yaz in CF Davis in RF Belt at 1b Dubon at 2b Ruf DH. Kapler said unlikely BHam makes opening day due to late start, so maybe Slater takes someone’s spot. I think Sanchez makes the original LU for his defense, but once rosters lose spots if he isn’t hitting at all he’s out. Kap gets to indulge full on platooney stuff moving Flores Dubon and others around.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 18, 2020 at 10:42 am

Do they give Duggar a shot??? With BHam a likely late add, Duggar gets a shot no? All whitey Dick Dug Yaz OF….all lefty infield Panda Craw Wong (any shot?) Belt and Shaw as DH…

Sometimes I don’t think it’s right to put down guys who contributed so much to multiple championships for our favorite team. Can’t blame them for signing big, long contracts and getting old. But there’s no excuse for a professional athlete to be seriously out of shape.

this was always going to be the most likely outcome–guys hang around long enough they’re going to become unproductive and that’s what we have with the Bore Core now. Guys like Timmy and Cain and others got out in time….

The numbers say Craw and Belt shouldn’t start on opening day vs. Kershaw. But it’s opening day, and it would be a tough pill for both not to start. Kapler learned in Philly it’s not just always about the numbers. The manager manages human beings, who have minds and emotions. It’ll be interesting to see what Kapler does with the opening day lineup.

If it was a normal 162-game regular season, I might see that side of it. But in a 60-game sprint where every game really does matter, no way. Sit ’em.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 18, 2020 at 1:12 pm

I would imagine (hope) that they truly put out the line-up that has the best chance to win. Will be interesting.

Given Belt’s abysmal stats vs. Kershaw — I tried to look it up on Baseball Reference, but it looks like that info isn’t free anymore — there’s no way in hell he should be in the Opening Day lineup. Crawford, too, for that matter.

Bart should start but I don’t think he will. It will be a business decision. I believe if Bart plays in 3 games it will be considered his first year. They will probably spot start him after they see how the season will play out.

Saw about half of Joe Bonamassa Live at Greek theatre (LA) show last night on public media channel. He has big group, 3 backup singer babes, 2 saxes and trumpet, himself another guitar keyboard bass and drums. This was tribute to Albert Freddy and B B king, with a big sound. Interesting guy though I think I prefer the originals.

This channel also showed a feature a month ago on historic black neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Hill District. Footage of jazz greats from there including billy Eckstine Errol Garner Stanley Turrentine George Benson Art Blakey among others. Great insight into rise and fall of entertainment, due mainly to urban renewal akin to what did in Fillmore District jazz clubs in SF and changed neighborhood forever. As they said, urban renewal=black removal.

Baggs said he didn’t believe service time was deal breaker for Bart not starting with ML first 30, though he took Z and Kap at their word on “development.”

      • Winder's avatar Winder said, on July 18, 2020 at 10:32 am

I agree about more development for Bart. From what I have read the plan is to have a shitload of intrasquad games in Sacto I believe.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 18, 2020 at 1:20 pm

I want to see Bart, but doubt he gets more than two starts (as not to start his FA clock).

  10. Winder's avatar Winder said, on July 18, 2020 at 10:06 am

I should read the articles more closely. This is just part of a Athletic article.

But there is an additional consideration in 2020. What if the season goes sideways? What if the pandemic forces another suspension? What happens in the very possible event that teams complete only a small slice of the 60-game schedule?

What if the Giants start the season with Joey Bart behind the plate at Dodger Stadium next Thursday, and this whole experiment becomes an untenable mess, and everything gets called off after, say, three games?

I’ll tell you what happens: according to the March agreement, the service-time denominator is no longer 67 days. It becomes three. In other words, Bart would play three games and receive a full year of major-league service. The Giants would completely waste a year of club control over a player that they view as a future franchise pillar.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 18, 2020 at 10:26 am

And at some point, teams have to plan for 2021, which could end up being a mini-season, too. A team could lose two years of service time for a player who didn’t play all that many games in two years.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 18, 2020 at 10:30 am

Plus, the next CBA contract will likely lower the service time to attain free agency from 6 years to 5 years, and loopholes removed. The players will be pushing very hard for this, because players want to get more money at a younger age. The new GMs don’t want to pay older players a lot anymore.

  11. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 18, 2020 at 10:30 am

And the geniuses they seem to be will not bother showcasing Joey Bart on opening day..

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 18, 2020 at 1:22 pm

It is a business decision. Nothing to do with can Bart play at the ML level. See the excerpt that Winder shared above. I have read that article in the Athletic, and others similar articles. Doubt we see much of Bart this year.

Crowley and Hank were having discussion about service time and Bart. Hank and others have said if season got cancelled altogether after a week and Bart was up to start, then he would get full year of service time and FO would look terrible.
On other hand, he only needs to sit I think they said 5-6 games or 1 week, and if it season went full 60 he accrues zero service time. Crowley says, put your best team out there, and it definitely would include Bart.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on July 18, 2020 at 11:36 am

Willedav-It really all comes down to betting on the pandemic. Otherwise sit him for a week like you said and let him rock & roll.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 18, 2020 at 1:24 pm

If he plays in THREE games, regardless of how many of the 60 they play, he gets a full year of service time. That is part of the March agreement to which the players and owners agreed.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on July 18, 2020 at 2:05 pm

Chipower- i believe it that if they play the whole 60 game and Bart plays lets say 40 of em then none of that time counts because he didn’t reach the 67 day requirement. But If he plays in 3 games and they suspend the season due to the virus he gets credit for a years worth of service. At least that is my understanding.

    https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=beltbr01&year=Career&t=b#all_oppon

    Against the bumbinos: 494 PA, 25 2B, 1 triple, 14 HR (a HR every 35 PA), .238, .349, .402, .751.

So yeah, definitely set his ass against the bums.

Realized these are not against Kershaw, which you finally listed, Mac. Bottom line, Belt sucks against the bums AND Kershaw. Sit his ass.

That’s the kind of thing Kapler gets paid for. “Craw and Belt, you’re starters, but….not on opening day.” That’s the part where a manager needs to have some people skills.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 18, 2020 at 2:46 pm

  20. xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 18, 2020 at 2:31 pm

Willie D’s LU looks good to me, with the understanding that PHs and replacements for El Gordo and Pence will mix in by mid-game. But I agree with the consensus — no way Bart starts the “season” on the 30, even though the other three possibilities don’t have all that much more experience. In fact, given the chances Bart’s had to work with Posey and the Giants staff (such as it’s been), in some ways Bart has more specific experience. Sanchez should start at 2B — and I look forward to watching him — but the lack of offense elsewhere will cut down his time. Gold glove and gold sombrero both for him last year.

So long as Kapler has 30 players in the dugout, with several of them being excellent utility types, he’d be foolish not to sub freely.

    Fuck,

Wow, my team just showed me our limited-edition PERSONALIZED Trump-Pence 2020 Welcome Mats and when I saw them, I immediately knew that YOU had to have one.

Unfortunately, we already sold out of the 500 Welcome Mats we had in stock. But I liked this item so much that I asked my team to rush order 50 NEW MATS for top supporters only.

BIG NEWS: YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED TO RECEIVE 1 OF THE 50

Brenda from Texas already claimed her Welcome Mat. The second mat is reserved for you ONLY, Fuck.

Hurry, I can only reserve your mat for the NEXT 3 HOURS.

Chi, thx for Ostler link. I read story today in Chron, and here’s direct quote: “…the Giants will have to keep Bart off (key word) their major league roster only 5 games to deny him one full season of service.”
I’ve seen words like this used by others lately, so I think your 1:24 isn’t accurate.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 19, 2020 at 8:01 am

I think this is the Kris Bryant type of situation–as long they keep Bart out briefly for start of season, he doesn’t get credit for full year of service yada yada.

The weird three-game arb situation kicks in, apparently (see Baggarly), only if the season gets shut down early. How the March agreement otherwise altered the super-two rules is hard to figure. Obviously, no player is going to be on the 30 for 130 days (or so) this year. Problem is, nobody’s showing us the agreement; we’re getting contract interpretation from beat writers who’re probably hearing about it from players and agents and front office people.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 19, 2020 at 8:50 am

any link, if it’s out there, to actual text from the agreement would be helpful while we wait for tomorrow’s exhibition game . . . .

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 19, 2020 at 8:56 am

yeah xoot, that is true. Season ends abruptly, if you have played only a few games you do get full year of service time.
If it does not, my understanding from what I’ve seen posted on twitter threads of Giants beat writers, Bart only needs to sit out first week-ish and he won’t accrue full year of service. but again, I’m not sure about that.

Here’s the write-up on the indispensable Longo:

“He’s a ways removed from those wonderful seasons with the Rays. But with Buster Posey having opted out, Evan Longoria is the closest thing a Giants team heavy on platoon options has to a true everyday player. And with this club in a clear transitory state, his influence on the next generation of Giants is important.”

In the Yanks/Mets game yesterday, I saw a few moments of spitting. For some reason, though, there were very few camera shots of the dugouts. It’d be interesting to see how the players do their social distancing in the dugouts.

I think Dubon is gonna be a solid player for us and he definitely has the versatility Kap is looking for. I hope we have a handful of players that will impress. i like the idea of playing the Dodgers a shitload of times to start the season and I think we should start as many youngsters as we can. I like the idea of throwing them into the fire right from the get go. Maybe some new blood will be able to tap Kershaw’s ass.

So, what the actual fuck is going on? When do games start? This week?

It has been a shitstorm of weirdness around here. A niece on my wife’s side, my niece’s best friend (who went to a 4th party in Modesto that she thankfully didn’t attend), a co-worker of my wife’s and her entire family, and a close friend of my daughter’s, who did a similar get-together, all came down with COVID. Christina’s friend has a sister who is 30 is now on a ventilator, and is touch and go. So, in the space of 5 days, 14 fairly close acquaintances got the virus. My wife’s niece is doing OK but the rest of the family is getting tested now. They are part of the Huntington Beach non-believers club. Well, they were.

I did manage to get a round of golf in at Lake Chabot with my daughter and my son. Been 3 years, and it was predictably terrible. By the 8th hole however, my driving got pretty consistent. I can’t chip to save my life. Christina had 5 pars, and she glermed a bunch of chips as well. I didn’t bother keeping score, but I think I had 2 pars. Garrett, however chipped in twice in a row. Once from 40 yards, and one from 50. If I had his short game, i’d lose 15 strokes a round.

Going to Tilden on Tuesday with a buddy and Christina.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 19, 2020 at 3:55 pm

My prayers go out to the whole group that got infected Chuck.Especially The gal on the ventilator machine at 30, way to young to have that happen to her! Yes this virus doesn’t give a shit about age, extra precautions are needed at all times!

Man I love playing at Tilden it’s a fun track, I’ve actually done pretty good there in my golf club in the past.I just hope after I can play there again after recovering from my hip replacement surgery, but it will take time with more PT but I’m feeling better every day!!
