A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Losing By A Carton of Freaking Eggs

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 17, 2020

I’ll give Kap credit. He tried the *take a big lead* approach and that didn’t work the first two games. So yesterday he tried the *get your ass kicked right out the gate and mount a furious comeback* approach. Sadly, that too failed. I hope he was taking copious notes on how to hold a lead as the A’s did with no problem on Sunday….

That was, WITHOUT QUESTION, the most embarrassing series we’ve ever played against Oakland.

I was having the same thoughts after yesterday’s game. Hell, that might be the most embarrassing three game Giants series I recall, EVER. Hey, you get your ass kicked sometimes, but the way they gave up big leads, not once, but two days in a row was just unbelievable. I remember sitting there after the A’s took the lead Saturday just shaking my head and saying you have got to be shitting me. That was pathetic, even by this team’s standards (or, is that a stretch – this team having standards)….

Whether you like Kap or not he doesn’t seem to be working out very well. I haven’t heard the players getting restless yet but that should start happening pretty soon if things don’t change. Z seems to be hiding out.

There was a reason the vast majority of the fan base let alone I suspect the Flap did not want him hired. Matt Williams???

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2020 at 8:17 am

I’m starting to think the Kapler hire was much like the Pence/Panda signings. He was hired to appease the casual fans. He looks good, he sounds good, he gives good interview. But he’s an empty uniform.

They sure didn’t hire him to manage the team in 2023.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2020 at 8:24 am

Bro hire. Z knew him from LA days for few years. Supposedly Kap thought he would get the job over Roberts; Z apparently recommended him to Phils for that gig. Once he was available Z threw away all copies of notes he had on guys he interviewed previously. Doubt he goes anywhere soon either.

“Well the baseball season was fun for a little while anyway”

Yes. by end of May last year I could barely watch Giants without some other distraction going on at same time. Less than third in, similar feel to covid ball.
Obviously until FO finds more pitching, rebuild is going nowhere fast. Nor is Kapler, and we won’t really know what he is telling Z/H about what he can do with what he has to work with, and what he needs.

Interesting players to watch? Um Yaz solano flores and…
Bart doesn’t do anything for me whether he comes up or not. Might knock a few out but ultimately C isn’t nearly as important roster issue compared to other major ones across the board.

I disagree on Bart. While Heinie and Tromp are fine at framing, their mental/physical errors are killing me. I want to see what Bart can bring to the table. I have mentioned what we are missing from Posey, ie his ability to call games, basically be a coach or QB on the field. It would be good to see how far along he is. Also, there has been some banter that Bart may be ticketed for a different position, long-term.

Bullpen problems: Jandel Gustave: Remember him? Giants dropped him going into the off-season. Flappers were wondering why. No answer on that and we’ll probably never get one. Guess what? Pittsburgh just picked him up. Dude has an exemplary ERA for SF last season and one of the lowest rates of homers given up in all of baseball. Think we could have used him for the 9th on Friday and Saturday night?

  7. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 17, 2020 at 8:49 am

Maybe the Giants have too many coaches telling these guys what to do. 3 hitting coaches plus 2 hitting coordinators, 3 pitching coaches plus 4 pitching coordinators and a rehab pitching coach, 2 major league coaches (not sure what that means but we need 2 of em), a quality control coach (?), a strength and conditioning coach, a couple of mental skills coaches (?), a coordinator of skill development, various roving coaches and they probably also get advise from Bench, first and 3rd base coaches as well as Kapler and Zaidi.
It sure seems to me that there is the potential for the players to get many mixed signals.

Yep, and a number of players on our team just cannot do that on a regular basis. One of my main sources of frustration this year…

Lol Vlown that’s a shitload of useless coaches!
Quality Control Coach? that’s a laugh, you need quality in players before this coach is even needed!
Mental Skills Coach? Is this team so mentally challenged?Well I assume so since the Bullpen is the worse in baseball and I’m even mentally exhausted watching them pitch..

They might have to hire even more coaches to help coach the current coaches who can’t coach a lick 👅 🤪

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 17, 2020 at 9:31 am

13 guys and not one of them can position the catcher right. Posey has had 3 catcher’s interference calls against him in 10 years of big league ball. We have 4 in a month.

Too many cooks spoil the soup, eh?

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 17, 2020 at 9:47 am

Cooks? We have a high performance chef so we only need the one. We also have a biomechanics assistant, not sure who the head biomechanics person is so maybe we need one of them.

They list 1 scout on their website, Ellis Burks. I loved that guy but with those knees, I doubt he’s scouting much in person, maybe that’s not done anymore anyway.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 17, 2020 at 9:57 am

I take it back, they list a couple of director of scouting guys.
Also Eli Whiteside is a roving instructor and Steve Decker is listed as a special assistant (to who or what, I don’t know), so you’d think they might be available to work with the catchers unless they are 1 on 1 with Bart and Bailey.

i don’t know why people keep saying “what did you expect? this was a throw away year.” Fuck that. That doesn’t excuse Kap’s absurd decisions and just flat out pushing the wrong buttons. His JOB is to push the right buttons. If he’s picking the wrong players, despite their failures, that is his failure too. He shares in those failures.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on August 17, 2020 at 10:15 am

If you fail once, wrap it up as a learning experience. If you fail via the same inane decisions time and again, something is severiously wrong with the thinking of those who put you in the position where you could become a serial-failure.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2020 at 10:19 am

Exactly. He’s been pushing the wrong buttons for the most part. The most baffling one was Cueto limping around all over the infield last week. They look at him, give him the green light, and then he walks 2 guys. He was obviously a little unfocussed after Pence’s deer-in-the-headlights OF miscue, and wasn’t pitching well.

Naturally Kapler leaves him in to give up a bomb to Turner, who OWNS Cueto.

It’s like Kapler is going AGAINST the prevailing analytics in that case. And for pitching guys 2 days in a row. No analytics say that is a good thing.

I don’t buy the narrative that Baer has any juice on player decisions. I think this is all on Farhan. He thought he could patch together a semi-competitive team and he simply cannot. I actually don’t mind the arrogance, as long as he realizes soon how bad we are and cuts loose Pablo and Pence. Everyone knows where I stand on Bart, but I’d love to see Davis, Dubon, and Duggar get lots of AB’s the rest of the way and see if any of them can help us going forward.

Yeah, Pence and Pablo had good years in 2019, and the let’s rotate/platoon the players around ala the Dodgers might be looking a little better if even a few of them were performing. But at this point it’s obvious that the plan is just tarnishing reputations and destroying public perceptions. Solano and Yaz will slow down, so although there might be small improvements elsewhere, the result will be the same. The 3Ds are more than likely F’s, but there’s nothing to lose.

  22. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2020 at 12:39 pm

One thing about the BC what they lack in hitting they still makeup in defense compared to using Flores are Solano.Longo is really picking it at 3rd, best I’ve seen since being here and he was good last year.Belt is Belt , steady as you go captain, still one of the best defensive 1B in the league overall.Craw yes he’s slowed down and I’m sure he’s pissed not being in there everyday facing a lefty much( which baffles me some cause I thought he hit them pretty good?)

Problem is (a good problem) is that both Solano&Flores are 2 of their best hitters along with Yaz. But is they’re stellar hitting enough to makeup for they’re terrible defense? Are they creating more runs than their giving up?

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2020 at 1:15 pm

Farhan gets to wear Pence and Pablo being on the roster. They should simply be jettisoned as they are bad.

And Crawfish and Belt need to be dealt with. In other words, cut. We can live with Longo and Posey for the time being. But the logjam in this line up with all the dead weight will slow down the rebuild for this miscarriage of a season.

They should be leaping at the chance to play the young players in this spring training of a season. Instead we get this.

As a staff, the Giants have allowed at least one home run in 19 consecutive games. That’s a franchise record and tied for the 12th-longest streak in major-league history. The 2017 Orioles and 2004 Mariners are the record holders at 26 games…..

There Is No End, There Is No End
The Willow Turns His Back On Inclement Weather

Now talk about tripe. But at least his affected stress on the second syllable of inclement, switching from iambs to trochees, was “musical.”

Back in the late 80s, I went to a party John Goddard from Village Music was having at the Sweetwater. He had Ry Cooder and that smoking band he was playing with at the time (Bobby, Terry and Willie Green on vocals, Flaco on accordion). I was standing in the walkway next to the stage that led to the dressing room stairs, watching the band and smoking cigs at that little shelf/table there. At the break Van Dyke Parks was bumming cigs from me while he chatted up a lady that he seemed to know well. I was told later it was May Pang from Lennon’s lost weekend.
I’d been to many Ry Cooder shows but this was an incredible night for me that was topped off by getting to talk snare drums with Jim Keltner.

It’s the main reason I don’t get too worked up about Kapler. He’s going to be here at least until the end of next season and possibly longer.
If the election goes the right way in November, it’ll be like winning a bunch of World Series all at once anyway.

      “Bad roster plays bad baseball.

There isn’t a manager in the world who could fix that.”

And that has always been true. He didn’t mention that a good roster plays good baseball, probably because it makes the Kapler discussion moot in ways that are inconvenient to someone whose living depends on a good story.

come on, if you are watching the games, and maybe you aren’t, he has made countless terrible decisions. This roster sucks, mostly the pitching but really all of it. But to give this fucker a free pass because you think managers have no impact on the game is silly.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 17, 2020 at 6:45 pm

I am watching the games. What’s silly is to think that a guy like Kapler or anybody who’s played baseball over a lifetime is so inherently flawed in making moves on the field that he’s significantly worse than some other dude with the same experience.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2020 at 6:47 pm

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2020 at 6:51 pm

That doesn’t mean Kapler isn’t a shitty manager. He has shown me nothing in the way of having a clue how to manage. He didn’t in Philly and he doesn’t now. The league is LITTERED with players who were shit managers.

Bob Brenly had a great team that he won a championship with. Is he a great manager? No. Not by a long stretch. He got his lucky break and took it. The fact that people play doesn’t mean shit in the way of managing. There are hundreds of washouts. Kapler is one of them.

I guarangoddamntee you he will not be the manager in 2023.

We need to FIGHT BACK. I just launched the 2020 Presidential Defense Task Force, and I’m calling on only my most trusted supporters to join – true American Patriots, like YOU.

As a member of the Task Force, I’ll be relying on YOU to DEFEND the White House, and the entire Country, from the Democrat’s radical agenda. YOU will be responsible for setting the record straight for MILLIONS of Americans across the Nation.

You can choose to look up the what’s been done to figure out what impact managers’ on field decisions have on a team’s W-L record. I read several articles years ago, but, really, it doesn’t take much of an effort to realize that within the constraints of the game and the talent of your players, the success of any one move (or non-move) versus another is a crapshoot. It is NOT a chess match — not even close.

  52. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Be that as it may, Kapler must be heading to the Hall of Fame based on his deft pitching decisions. A bad manager can win with great players. Brenly showed that. But a bad manager can screw up a good team. Matt Williams showed that.

Just as a great manager won’t win with a crap team. Leo Durocher springs to mind.

The point being we are a bad team with a shitty manager. Bochy knew how to used his bullpen better than say Dusty Baker.

Just because you can’t quantify it doesn’t mean decisions do or don’t matter.

Angel’s mgr got it as noted. Easy to tell Canning was flagging. Anderson was facing the meat of the Angel’s order and it was easy enough to tell that he was running on fumes. A lot of lineups see a pitcher in two ABs and in the third the vets, anyway, have a pretty good read. Kapler should have brought in his best fireman–that is, if we have one.
