What I truly enjoy about this years Giants is that we can score some runs. That is a true bright spot for me. There are quite a few things I don’t particularly like but we all knew coming into this year that we would have our share of kinks. Defense and pitching for the most part hasn’t been up to par but if we continue to score a bunch or runs we just might do something this year.
Who wouldda thunk it—Giants as a major offensive power? Not I, for sure. It appeared that that they would be hapless, helpless and hopeless…not quite hardly.
Central to the upsurge has been the all-around greatness of YaZmaTaZ…see my comments below and scroll back to yesterday’s blog.
Zaidi has done an incredible job (along with his scouts and research people) of doing their due diligence and constantly sweeping the trash-heap for much needed help. Additional to pulling Yaz out from under the sorely needful (but overlooking their own talent-pool) Orioles; Z, Harris and their boys also struck paydirt in Flores and Solano. Execs of the year…a no-doubter. Not many among the MLB brass are capable of creating silk purses outta sow’s ears.
For those who didn’t check the blog post-game, I did some research on current stats for YaZmaTaZ and was totally blown away by how many categories in which he is currently very high on the leader-board. Final stat cited is the critically important one of XBH’s…see how he compares with Tatis in that one. Enjoy.
Yaz is definitely big news and MLB should play it up for all it’s worth.
By the end of this toy season, he’ll have the equivalent of a full year in the bigs.
The numbers are unlike anything Giant fans have seen since Buster was in his prime:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yastrmi01.shtml
Don’t much understand advanced stats—lack of diligent research,, I guess. But when you compare # of XBH’s with hit total and consider that they represent OVER half of that total, we are looking at something quite amazing.
YaZmaTaZ evidently has achieved an incredible level of bat control plus hard contact. Triples are my prime indicator marker–particularly for players who are not through the roof speedsters. What that tells me is that his pitch assessment reflex combo are at some stratospheric level. Yaz has gone exponential on Wee Willie Keeler’s “hit em where they ain’t” dead-ball era philosophy. It’s like he has finessed a whole nother dimension.
The quality that makes our man a totally different kind of star is his unassuming, quiet professionalism, a truly rare commodity among today’s marquee players. Overall, he may compare favorably across the board with Mookie and Tatis, but he is and will remain hard to hype.
As a recovering adman, my recommendation would be along the lines of his inherited genetic makeup, a baseball family affair. IF MLB is serious about appealing to newer generations, something along those lines could get some play. Looking at him, Yaz is Walter Mitty’s wet-dream, a “Damn Yankees” Joe Average, who just happens to be an unfolding super-star. Baseball is far and away the most classically romantic of all major sports, as it has the power of appealing to a very broad spectrum of humanity. YaZmaTaZ could be the poster-boy for fan self-identification among most social classes and who spans inter-generational chasms. Yeah, set him down with grandpa Carl and play the whole family fun together meme for all it’s worth.
Here’s the video
I remember that like it was yesterday. Giant/Dodger games were so much fun. i knew Juan fucked up but even as a kid I rationalized it.
holy shit! I’ve never seen this
If I remember right, things started to cool down when Mays put his hat on Roseboro’s head and helped lead him off the field.
Fuentes with bat fully extended an awesome still pic if you can find it. Mays major peacemaker helped get Roseboro some attention and out of further harms way.
This is the more famous one…
https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.dXoUVQtxq9zOl7Nvyu0fTgHaEt&pid=15.1
We talk about it most years on the anniversary. I’m still amazed by the fact that just 4 days before, I’d watched Fuentes (on TV in black & white) make his big league debut behind Marichal vs. Mets. I told my dad if he doesn’t pan out, we should try to get Ron Hunt…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN196508180.shtml
Looks like Hunt came back that season from the shoulder injury.
My idea of a great trivia question is who completed Marichal’s AB after the incident?
Well I will help you out Loo,
It was rookie infielder Bob Schroeder completed the AB and eventually struck out.
After Mays later hit a 3 run homer off a shaken still Koufax to give them a 4-2 lead Ron Herbel pitched 5 1/3 innings replacing Marichal of exceptional ball, and then Murakami got the last 2 outs for the save I believe?
Good job, Kat. I knew Schroeder was the answer but did not remember Murakami.
Things drop in and out of my memory these days…
What!!! You’re telling me that your memory-glands are sagging as much as mine? Own up now. I’m a 44-model of theWarBaby generation, one of the smallest and most exclusive ones out there, as we cover only a six year span and in the main, do not much resemble those born in the Dirty Thirties and sorta serve as precursors to the Boomers. That group soared on the music that “my generation” effloresced. But that’s okay, we elders are all in this thing together, doing our levelest to hold this mess together in some state of balance.
I was listening to that game on my transistor radio and remember thinking holy shit this is bad a full out brawl and Roseboro getting clubbed my Marichal needing a lot of stitches very ugly for baseball.Mays stepped in and played peacemaker pulling Roseboro to the side and even tended to his wound and without him it could of been even worse, Mays was credited with diffusing the ugly situation..
I have a trivia question as well.. Who took over catching for Roseboro?
If it wasn’t Torborg, I have no clue…
Definitely sagging here, Stix.
Constantly googling stuff that I used to know instantly.
Pretty sure I still know all 145 Derby winners.
Always a hit at parties…
Loo’s 9:58 is the one I remember. Fuentes is ready to explode on someone; good thing cooler heads (somewhat) prevailed eventually.
those times of summer family took couple week vacation to visit relatives in Downieville off Hwy 49/Yuba r. The morning chron would show up at the general store about 4 in afternoon so we’d walk down the hill into “town” around then. so that is first I saw or heard what happened.
This is no youth movement.
For better or worse, Giants are going for it this season.
Cueto is not getting dealt and the offers will probably be shit anyway.
Easier to say that during a winning streak…
Agree. I think it’s actually quite similar to the approach Sabean and Evans had been taking.
Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
Yep. All this talk about trading Johnny B Goode negates the fact that most prospects aren’t playing anyway. More than likely, they’d be better off waiting till next year and a better offer.
Same goes for Yaz and Solano.
Jeff Torborg it was Nice job Loo!
Yeah 21 mil is a lot to absorb for any team willing to give up some decent prospects..
Outside chance maybe? Since the Braves took on Melonface maybe there up for Cueto since their Starting staff has been hit hard by injuries, though they can probably win that division without him..
From what I understand, winning the division is pretty meaningless as far as getting any kind of advantage in the postseason…
Those Yaz numbers from B/R are amazing. At home this year slash line .348/.464/.739 for 1.203 OPS so far.
That last AB knock was a beauty too, smacking line drive into LF corner on a hop. 3 of his 6 HRs off LHP.
over 12 games, admittedly small sample size.
Winder’s starter post is spot on for me.
It’s fun having a team that actually can hit HRs, score runs. The inept offense mode has been exhausting all these years, even when the pitching was good. Small sample size, but this has to be the best Giants offense in over a decade. Better than any of the champ teams, they were all about pitching. Too bad this squad’s pitching is a musical chairs game; but that’s what happens when the entire roster, the entire organization actually, is in total transition in a multi-year rebuild…
Loo thx for box score on fuentes debut day. Marichal in mid August after shutting out Mets on 3 hits had an ERA of 1.73. Wound up 2.13 for the season in 296 innings…suspension was 8 games wasn’t it? yeow
Mays at 1.000 OPS and Mac not too far behind him.
Cepeda had to play LF to get in the lineup.
Yeah it was 8 games (10 games with doubleheader’s)
Marichal’s fine was a paltry 1,750 bucks which today would of equated to 15,000..
I just hope we can keep on winning some games especially against division foes.
Singer is pitching vs the Twins for his third straight start. That’s a little ridiculous if you stop and think about it.
can you imagine how stupid the O’s feel for letting Yaz get away for nothing?
O’s organization needs to take some smart pills. Maybe it’s an ownership thing.
If Slater being dicey at best with his elbow strain and now a groin strain, I’m just wondering if they put him on the 10day and bring back my boy Jaylin Davis? Yeah I’m probably dreaming they’re dumb enough to bring the grave Duggar back first..
“Grave Dugger” that’s a good one.
Like I said before, Duggar and Slater seem to be always get hurt. Now, Slater with a pulled whatever. I know they are not trying to get hurt. But, as they say, a player’s first ability is availability…
The Sac Kings are dealing with this with Marvin Bagley, who they drafted ahead of Doncic. In three seasons, Bagley has been out with injuries a lot. Bagley has tremendous potential, but can’t stay on the court.
Speaking of Doncic, he recently got injured.
“Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s Game 4 due to a sprained left ankle that caused him to exit Friday night’s 130-122 loss to the LA Clippers in the fourth quarter.”
Only thing they gotta keep healthy at Stanford is that brain
When I posted yesterday about Stanford players, I forgot about Piscotty. He’s doing ok. He engineered a trade to Oakland so he could be close to his dying mother in the Bay Area.
Tromp in the squat. That makes no sense to me. Maybe Bart will PH.
Bart took a foulball to his right bicep last night. I don’t know if that factored in.
yeah. that looked to me like a hit to the shoulder that one of those shoulder flaps would’ve deflected. He had on the left shoulder, only.
FUCK, I think it’s time you pay-palled a buck or two.
This post is hilarious . . . Hopefully, Flavor “Fuck” will send a couple of ducats his way. Thanks for sharing Xoot!
They already tried to get me with this one
I think the official donors list will be a public record if it’s displayed next week. That kid journalist from Forbes is already ready to roll. Others will be on his trail. Come on.
Oh. My. God! I would die laughing if FUCK YOU scrolled past Trump on the big board!!
Marlins Nats game with bases loaded Robles of Nats hit a line drive right at LF. It appeared to be knuckling, said announcers, but hit right in the guy’s glove. The stop action shot showed him leaning back away from it, and the ball popped out for an error/run scored. Robles was given credit for rbi, Nats up 5-0.
but this one will show up on high (or low) lights.
Speaking of low light reels,Phillies Jose Alvarez luckily escaped major damage to his balls and maybe even pitch again this weekend. The ball crushing exit speed off the bat was 105 mph!!
Holy Crap 💩 I still cringe when I’ve seen the replay. But the gamer that he was in the moment he still made the play at 1st base before collapsing and seeing stars in utter pain..
Hope this works:

No it makes sense Bart is out in this one.He just caught 7 hours of baseball they weren’t about to burn him out.He will catch tomorrow, be available to PH tonight. What’s really tragic they put Slater on the 10 day DL,
But they bring back the GraveDuggar which pisses me off 😡
I thought it made more sense to let Bart catch three night games and then give him a break on the day game before an off day. I mean, he has been catching in Sactown, right? Zum may be right about the hit he took last night. I think Krukow said it was the biceps, but I also think he missed that call. Would anyone ever take Kruk or Kuip to the bank?
I think they’ve been ok this season.
A little more focused on the game with no fans to distract them…
good point, though it reminds me that I’ve actually enjoyed them more when the team’s on the road and they’re commenting, essentially, on the same video I’m seeing.
Kamala has a pretty smile.
I wish she’d ditch the pants suits and wear some brighter colors…
Thanks, Hillary.
Slater to IL, Duggar back from the grave.
He should change his name to Austin SeeYaLater…
Glasschez redux. Or for you football fans Crystal Todd Shell.
Posted this last night.
You think Vogt had a rough night?
Chris Stratton, who turned 30 today, with 1-2-3 8th for Pirates who are pounding Brewers today. Guy made 26 starts for Giants at one point in career.
A first-round pick for the Giants, I think.
btw, cbs site writer making suggestions for trade deadline deal had gausman going….across bay to A’s. Would the Z make a deal to help former team? These are rare right?
Might be able to pry Khris Davis since we can’t give are own Davis any AB’s.
Just want a Davis out in the outfield, hey I’ll settle for Willie Davis..
I was really jealous of all that Dodger speed.
I think it’s because as kids we spent a lot of time just racing each other.
No one faster from second to home than Davis.
I think his wife fell off a cliff while vacationing in Hawaii.
Something like that – I could be mistaken.
Maybe it was Milt Pappas’ wife? Or both?
yeah he was really fast. I guess I got into that after watching 100 yd dash races where they called the winner the World’s Fastest. Once tried to build high jump in back yard. Problem was if you didn’t clear the bar (wood) you’d break it apart.
i’m torn. This stupid marketing idea of Trump to display everyone’s name live during the GOP convention could be a boon for me. Is it worth it to donate $5 to this fucking grifter with the hopes the we see “Fuck, from California” slide across the screen at some point?
I think it’s a scam. Isn’t everything?
Guarantee you are one of countless “Fuck Yous” and “Blow Mes” out there…
Fuck, in your zip code alone your fellow patriots Eat, Suck and Bite already have secured their spots on the great donor roll. Join them now!
Gotta remember Drumpf is a fraud.
No F’ing way they will or could put Chyron on bottom of screen going across with the hundreds of thousands of names of fools that contributed to Drump. They’ll probably have a poster with some, not all the names in microscopic print within one shot on the screen. Or maybe just do nothing at all — the Steve Bannon “rip off the suckers” method of dealing with contributors…
you’re right. They’ll just run a bunch of names like “Darlene from Dipshit Texas $10”
the subject line in this email had me chuckling to myself today

to me
I just finished reading Mary Trump’s book. Donald Trump is a sociopathic chip off the ol’ sociopathic block, Fred Trump.
Huh. Just finished Keith Richards book, Life. Crazy shit. Interesting just hearing about things from the inside.
Enjoyed that one. Remind me who was the guy he finally got that tuning/riff idea from?
He’d make a better prez than the current occupant.
Could Solano have possibly done a little better on the base paths there?
I know he couldn’t have done worse…
He messed up. He stopped too soon. He should have run closer to the second baseman and forced him to make a tag. That would have given Belt time to be safe at first.
keep playing like that we are gonna lose. We had em belt went after a bad pitch.
Yeah, the pitch wasn’t a strike and Belt took a lousy swing at it. Belt doesn’t usually swing at a pitch like that.
The pitcher walks three guys in front of Belt and you figure Belt of all people is going to be patient.
AZ pitcher reminds me of a RH Bumgarner…
Also watching Phils-Braves, man, the Philly bullpen is lousy. ERA over 8.
Why did Craw hesitate with 2 outs?
Because he’s disinterested,
Wow it was a grave yard smash as the Grave Duggar conecta for a double. That .105 average going up and distancing him farther apart from Hunter’s.096 avg..
He did the mash the monster mash
He did the mash it was a graveyard smash!
Did i hear that right? We have 13 more home runs than the D-backs?
I didn’t hear it, but per B/R it’s 36-22.
In Brooklyn, that’s 14…
Anderson’s been incredibly economical–42 pitches through four full. Now Gallen is catching on and cruising.
Melonhead blew the save, but no worries vs. Philly ‘pen, Duvall 2-out RBI single wins it for Braves.
Were the Phillies really shitty when Mr. Kotter was there? They sure look like horseshit now.
Got off the good starts, then faded in second half. Their bullpen really is a hot mess right now.
This Arizona team just doesn’t impress me as much now that Goldy is gone. They loss a lot of power in that LU..
Don’t try to advance the runner or anything stupid like that in a tight game…
No pitcher to bunt him over. Got to love 4.5 hour 9 inning games. Thanks Manfred.
Hey Willie, it was Ry Cooder who introduced Keith to open G tuning. There’s also something about Don Everly and open tuning.
thx, love Ry Cooder. wasn’t there an older blues guy he talked to about learning some opening to a tune he had always liked, who had always refused to tell anyone how he did it?
Nice play by Mr.Dick, thought no way he makes that catch..
Yazzzzzzz! S-later is out 2 years doing that.
Yaz at the fence!
wow what a grab by Yaz.
dickerson had good one too. Might have saved him a week or two to start hitting again. He’s 1-19.
Great catch, Yaz!
Wow What a unbelievable great Catch by Yaz!!
Man what is it that he can’t do!
Krukow was wrong- Pence on the Fence wasn’t in a World Series. I think it was a playoff game vs. Nats in ‘14.
yes. Can’t believe he fucked that up
Jason Wyrth hit the ball, I think.
Dementia is starting to show in Kruk&Kuip..
Who?
i saw something earlier today, I think it’s his grandad’s bday? It was a video of him making a great catch in LF many years ago. Too bad he’s such a dick or Yaz’ catch tonight would have been a little cooler
You heard Carl was a dick?
Those are cool Giants uniforms on tonight. That SF emblem really pops..
Kat I was thinking same thing, AZ just isn’t the same without Golds around. Lamb used to burn us too.
I think Lamb used to kill Casilla.
great catch but Pence’s was better
this was better
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpEBtgdjwKo
although you could argue that ball caught him
Wow!!!
Craw having a sloppy night.
Great catches by Dick and Yaz, and then Craw effs up the shutout.
DAMN!! Close!! 3 hits, 3 doubles for Bart. Dude has a very quiet steady swing. Shoulda been up 2 weeks go.
Bart oh-so-close!
He’s a doubles machine!
Damn! Joey was robbed!
Come next season it may well be the Daily Doubles–YaZmaTaZ vs Bart. One of them might readily top the league in that category.
wow that was a rocket missed by inches.
then AZ reliever walks Dubon on 4 pitches, big mistake.
Carl’s catch was off Bench in the ASG.
I think 1968.
The ASG was so huge then…
I am diggin’ me some BART ! …
Musta been that extra month in Sac that he learned to hit…
Kap made a couple of astute (v LHP) PH moves –even if a bit obvious–Now let’s cash in with nobody out and yessir yessir, three bags full.
Haven’t I seen this movie before–like recently. Base on balls with the sacks jammed.
