What I truly enjoy about this years Giants is that we can score some runs. That is a true bright spot for me. There are quite a few things I don’t particularly like but we all knew coming into this year that we would have our share of kinks. Defense and pitching for the most part hasn’t been up to par but if we continue to score a bunch or runs we just might do something this year.

Who wouldda thunk it—Giants as a major offensive power? Not I, for sure. It appeared that that they would be hapless, helpless and hopeless…not quite hardly.

Central to the upsurge has been the all-around greatness of YaZmaTaZ…see my comments below and scroll back to yesterday’s blog.

Zaidi has done an incredible job (along with his scouts and research people) of doing their due diligence and constantly sweeping the trash-heap for much needed help. Additional to pulling Yaz out from under the sorely needful (but overlooking their own talent-pool) Orioles; Z, Harris and their boys also struck paydirt in Flores and Solano. Execs of the year…a no-doubter. Not many among the MLB brass are capable of creating silk purses outta sow’s ears.

  2. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on August 22, 2020 at 8:34 am

For those who didn’t check the blog post-game, I did some research on current stats for YaZmaTaZ and was totally blown away by how many categories in which he is currently very high on the leader-board. Final stat cited is the critically important one of XBH’s…see how he compares with Tatis in that one. Enjoy.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 22, 2020 at 9:23 am

Yaz is definitely big news and MLB should play it up for all it’s worth.
By the end of this toy season, he’ll have the equivalent of a full year in the bigs.
The numbers are unlike anything Giant fans have seen since Buster was in his prime:

Don’t much understand advanced stats—lack of diligent research,, I guess. But when you compare # of XBH’s with hit total and consider that they represent OVER half of that total, we are looking at something quite amazing.

YaZmaTaZ evidently has achieved an incredible level of bat control plus hard contact. Triples are my prime indicator marker–particularly for players who are not through the roof speedsters. What that tells me is that his pitch assessment reflex combo are at some stratospheric level. Yaz has gone exponential on Wee Willie Keeler’s “hit em where they ain’t” dead-ball era philosophy. It’s like he has finessed a whole nother dimension.

The quality that makes our man a totally different kind of star is his unassuming, quiet professionalism, a truly rare commodity among today’s marquee players. Overall, he may compare favorably across the board with Mookie and Tatis, but he is and will remain hard to hype.

As a recovering adman, my recommendation would be along the lines of his inherited genetic makeup, a baseball family affair. IF MLB is serious about appealing to newer generations, something along those lines could get some play. Looking at him, Yaz is Walter Mitty’s wet-dream, a “Damn Yankees” Joe Average, who just happens to be an unfolding super-star. Baseball is far and away the most classically romantic of all major sports, as it has the power of appealing to a very broad spectrum of humanity. YaZmaTaZ could be the poster-boy for fan self-identification among most social classes and who spans inter-generational chasms. Yeah, set him down with grandpa Carl and play the whole family fun together meme for all it’s worth.

If I remember right, things started to cool down when Mays put his hat on Roseboro’s head and helped lead him off the field.

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 22, 2020 at 8:59 am

Fuentes with bat fully extended an awesome still pic if you can find it. Mays major peacemaker helped get Roseboro some attention and out of further harms way.

  5. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 22, 2020 at 9:13 am

We talk about it most years on the anniversary. I’m still amazed by the fact that just 4 days before, I’d watched Fuentes (on TV in black & white) make his big league debut behind Marichal vs. Mets. I told my dad if he doesn’t pan out, we should try to get Ron Hunt…

  6. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 22, 2020 at 9:33 am

My idea of a great trivia question is who completed Marichal’s AB after the incident?

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 22, 2020 at 10:12 am

Well I will help you out Loo,
It was rookie infielder Bob Schroeder completed the AB and eventually struck out.
After Mays later hit a 3 run homer off a shaken still Koufax to give them a 4-2 lead Ron Herbel pitched 5 1/3 innings replacing Marichal of exceptional ball, and then Murakami got the last 2 outs for the save I believe?

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 22, 2020 at 10:18 am

Good job, Kat. I knew Schroeder was the answer but did not remember Murakami.
Things drop in and out of my memory these days…

What!!! You’re telling me that your memory-glands are sagging as much as mine? Own up now. I’m a 44-model of theWarBaby generation, one of the smallest and most exclusive ones out there, as we cover only a six year span and in the main, do not much resemble those born in the Dirty Thirties and sorta serve as precursors to the Boomers. That group soared on the music that “my generation” effloresced. But that’s okay, we elders are all in this thing together, doing our levelest to hold this mess together in some state of balance.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 22, 2020 at 10:33 am

I was listening to that game on my transistor radio and remember thinking holy shit this is bad a full out brawl and Roseboro getting clubbed my Marichal needing a lot of stitches very ugly for baseball.Mays stepped in and played peacemaker pulling Roseboro to the side and even tended to his wound and without him it could of been even worse, Mays was credited with diffusing the ugly situation..

I have a trivia question as well.. Who took over catching for Roseboro?

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 22, 2020 at 10:36 am

Loo’s 9:58 is the one I remember. Fuentes is ready to explode on someone; good thing cooler heads (somewhat) prevailed eventually.

those times of summer family took couple week vacation to visit relatives in Downieville off Hwy 49/Yuba r. The morning chron would show up at the general store about 4 in afternoon so we’d walk down the hill into “town” around then. so that is first I saw or heard what happened.

    This is no youth movement.
For better or worse, Giants are going for it this season.
Cueto is not getting dealt and the offers will probably be shit anyway.
Easier to say that during a winning streak…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 22, 2020 at 11:49 am

Yep. All this talk about trading Johnny B Goode negates the fact that most prospects aren’t playing anyway. More than likely, they’d be better off waiting till next year and a better offer.

Same goes for Yaz and Solano.

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 22, 2020 at 11:36 am

Yeah 21 mil is a lot to absorb for any team willing to give up some decent prospects..
Outside chance maybe? Since the Braves took on Melonface maybe there up for Cueto since their Starting staff has been hit hard by injuries, though they can probably win that division without him..

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 22, 2020 at 11:58 am

From what I understand, winning the division is pretty meaningless as far as getting any kind of advantage in the postseason…

Those Yaz numbers from B/R are amazing. At home this year slash line .348/.464/.739 for 1.203 OPS so far.
That last AB knock was a beauty too, smacking line drive into LF corner on a hop. 3 of his 6 HRs off LHP.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 22, 2020 at 12:10 pm

over 12 games, admittedly small sample size.

  14. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 22, 2020 at 11:49 am

Winder’s starter post is spot on for me.
It’s fun having a team that actually can hit HRs, score runs. The inept offense mode has been exhausting all these years, even when the pitching was good. Small sample size, but this has to be the best Giants offense in over a decade. Better than any of the champ teams, they were all about pitching. Too bad this squad’s pitching is a musical chairs game; but that’s what happens when the entire roster, the entire organization actually, is in total transition in a multi-year rebuild…

  15. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 22, 2020 at 1:05 pm

Loo thx for box score on fuentes debut day. Marichal in mid August after shutting out Mets on 3 hits had an ERA of 1.73. Wound up 2.13 for the season in 296 innings…suspension was 8 games wasn’t it? yeow
Mays at 1.000 OPS and Mac not too far behind him.
Cepeda had to play LF to get in the lineup.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 22, 2020 at 1:31 pm

Yeah it was 8 games (10 games with doubleheader’s)

The stop action shot showed him leaning back away from it, and the ball popped out for an error/run scored. Robles was given credit for rbi, Nats up 5-0.

Melonhead blew the save, but no worries vs. Philly ‘pen, Duvall 2-out RBI single wins it for Braves.

Were the Phillies really shitty when Mr. Kotter was there? They sure look like horseshit now.

Got off the good starts, then faded in second half. Their bullpen really is a hot mess right now.

This Arizona team just doesn’t impress me as much now that Goldy is gone. They loss a lot of power in that LU..

No pitcher to bunt him over. Got to love 4.5 hour 9 inning games. Thanks Manfred.

Hey Willie, it was Ry Cooder who introduced Keith to open G tuning. There’s also something about Don Everly and open tuning.

thx, love Ry Cooder. wasn’t there an older blues guy he talked to about learning some opening to a tune he had always liked, who had always refused to tell anyone how he did it?

dickerson had good one too. Might have saved him a week or two to start hitting again. He’s 1-19.

Krukow was wrong- Pence on the Fence wasn’t in a World Series. I think it was a playoff game vs. Nats in ‘14.

i saw something earlier today, I think it’s his grandad’s bday? It was a video of him making a great catch in LF many years ago. Too bad he’s such a dick or Yaz’ catch tonight would have been a little cooler
