A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Somehow Still Winning

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 18, 2021

There’s really nothing left to say about the bullpen except:

  1. If this is there worst problem to have that’s a good thing considering how many holes I thought this team had to start the season
  2. if you think about it the law of averages suggests they should get better. These are major league pitchers, however bad they are, no major leaguer comes out failing and sucking every single appearance.

Kevin Pillar is ok. He is the ultimate gamer who got lucky, too. Easy 1.0 for him dealing with that near tragic event last night.

Interesting pitching match up today of 2 guys who probably have revenge on their mind.

Haven’t checked the weather yet….

Another W, baby. I agree Craig, you would not expect guys to regress at this point (just past the 1/4 point of the season).

Looks like possibility of rain early in Cincy, but clearing by game time (this looking at two different weather apps).

Bart got 2 more hits including double for Sac yesterday, now hitting .382. solano got 4 ABs, Wade Jr. homered in 7-6 L. SP Banda got hammered, and has given up 10 runs in 11 innings over 3 starts. Leone took L in 9th.

Roster move coming once Solano is activated, maybe by time Dogs get here for weekend series.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 10:47 am

Maybe the hitting lightbulb for Bart is going off. Give him a half season at AAA with consistent game appearances to improve his defense and pitcher handle, and seeing good breaking balls. It’s way early to give up on this guy and trade him, IMO. He’s got power to burn, just a question whether he can harness it…

Nice story in Athletic on Beede, working through rehab pitch limit starts in Sac. Still has black shoes, great look. gotta admit, not fan of white shoes by Rogers and others, though pitching is fine. MCC guy had column talking about normal routine of Giants games, ho hum through 6 with good outing by SP, some runs by offense( though not as good as last year) and then things get more exciting by 7th. like last night.

I fucking hate white shoes…think the A’s would look so much better with black…

“Multiple nasal fractures” is the official injury, but yeah, good to see that’s the worst of it for Pillar. Mets announcer said Pillar got hit in the chin playing with the Giants vs. Pads two years ago, but I don’t remember that one.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:05 am

Well, some guys just suck and hoping for a rebound that may or may not happen can be futile. But there’s little to be done but rotate through some of the AAA guys. Unless we trae one of our starters for pen help. Hey maybe we can get Yusmeiro back.

And apropos of nothing, this cracked me up.

  6. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:06 am

Yeah I heard Beede was hitting 96-97 with his fastball, that’s a good sign with his new we can rebuild him arm. He’s hoping for a June return, he’ll even out of the BP that would be a helpful bonus.
The other guy besides Wood being a complete steal by Z is now turning out to be SS/3B/2B super utility player Will Wilson formerly a 1st rd pick by the Angels. He is raking the ball for High A Emerald Nuts 🥜 batting .415, 3 HR’s 8 RBI’s with OPS at a blistering.1329. Z thinks he will be with the club sooner then later, and with all the injuries in the infield sooner is fine with me..

Glad to hear Pillar wasn’t hurt worse, that was horrific to watch ..

Yep. I remember getting that SI when i was a kid.

Moronta moved to the 60 day DL. Damn.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:58 am

That’s not good news for Moronta ever coming back this year.
Z moving him to the 60 day DL opened up a spot to sign Hunter Bishop’s brother Jaden? to join the organization after being released by the Mariners.

  9. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:50 am

Yeah I was thinking of adding in Conigliaro the worse beaning of all time that basically ended his promising superstar career with his eye injury ( partial blindness?) then later went on to be a below average tv sports guy in the Bay Area for KPIX I believe?
Another beaning to the eye was to Dicky Thon playing for the Astros, another promising career cut short due to blurred vision after his beaning..

HBPs at highest rate ever per Athletic. Maybe it’s time to flatten the strike zone and make those phantom corner strikes legit. Harper got hit in the face earlier this year. 2 players getting hit like that in 40 games is a warning.

    • James's avatar James said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:55 am

And intentionally throwing at someone should finally be eliminated from the game, if there isn’t already a mandate that’s been circulated by MLB.

Thanks for that loo- he had a much more stellar career than I remembered. And, it looked like the drinking affected him more than the HBP’s. I can remember sitting and watching the games with my dad talking about him and saying he could have been so much more. Just another reason to hate Drysdale and Osteen.

I’ve read that Hart’s drinking was at least partly to relieve the shoulder pain.
He was such a favorite of mine and I remain bitter that the Giants did not see fit to commemorate his passing with one of those patches as they did for Davenport who was deserving, but couldn’t carry Hart’s I.W. Harper bottle.

He got hurt running from one base to another, I think. Maybe the players should have stationary bikes in the dugout and try to stay loose. They sit or stand in the dugout, and then a few minutes later sometimes they have to sprint on the basepaths and they pull something. I think basketball or football would have figured out something by now on that. Baseball just kind of accepts those types of injuries.

As I’ve said before, I have no use for watching weakly hit grounders and flyballs by the team I’m rooting for. As boring as any strikeout. Plus that kind of contact doesn’t drive up the pitch count, which is essential for beating pitchers like Castillo. And I love watching SF pitchers get their Ks. It’s exciting.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 7:48 pm

17Ks for one team in a game is not my kind of game. Not to mention the other team’s Ks (Reds had 8, total both teams = 25)
Why have great athletes that can catch, field, throw and run on defense, if they just stand out there for 1/2 to 2/3 of the ABs? That is total boring ass baseball, and robs fans of entertainment from defensive plays. No wonder younger people don’t want to watch, it’s like watching paint dry. If a called 3rd strike or a whiffed 3rd strike is now the result in half the ABs of games, not in a pitcher’s duel of starters, but by no name relievers fire-balling 97 mph every inning from 5-9, then count me out of being a fan of that kind of game. If that were the game in the ’60s, we’d have Mays and Clemente standing around in the outfield instead of making spectacular, legacy-building plays…
