Still In First Place, Barely
I mocked the signings of Gausman, Wood and Disco. Any of the 3 could legimately start the all star game. And all 3 should be on the team.
The Padres and Dodgers are coming that is a known fact but at least we are keeping this season interesting. Imagine what we could look forward to if Farhan fixes this bullpen?
Exciting game tonight in LA. We don’t match up too well vs a healthy Laker team but hey it’s all entertainment, right? There’s no way Steph gets an open look tonight but he doesn’t really need one and that will just open it up for other guys anyway. LA by 5 points? Yikes I wouldn’t bet a dollar against Curry and Draymond.
I just read something that I guess everyone here might already know.
The Giants entire starting rotation except for Webb is in their “walk” year.
We could be looking at the biggest roster turnover in team history…

Why I was hoping for major trade deadline deals for as many Gigantes as possible.
Yeah Loo, other than Cueto, I’d like to see SF offer extensions/new deal to Gausman Wood and DeSclafani at least, and not trade them. Beede is working to get back, but I don’t see SPs from inside system on near horizon. While pen is certainly major issue, more effective innings you can get out of starters obviously mproves chance t play winning baseball. I can’t see letting these guys walk and trying to find 3 good SPs all over again 2022..
Agree.
This is a good situation for the Giants to be in. Pretty sure they will all want at least a 3 year commitment. At this stage I would give it to them. We will have some homegrown talent up here pretty soon but until then…keep this party going.
Yeah, these were all play-to-pay deals. We can hopefully keep 2 but 3 would be great. Gasman and Wood. Let’s see how they hold up.
If only Z had taken the La Stella gamble on Wood or Disco.
Guy (David Barnard) on twitter responding to Slusser game thread story in Chron: “The Giants version of Gordie Howe hat trick: a homer, injury and quality start.”
Hey Stix is having trouble posting here. I invited him as a *contributer* and that should have fixed it. He just cc’d me on an email to wordpress saying he still can’t post here AND that he paid those jokers $48. Have any of you guys paid wordpress $48??????
No, never…in all the years we’ve all enjoyed being on here thanks to you, Flavor.
I have never paid WordPress anything…
I’ve never paid WordPress Jack shit, though it’s an adventure to post sometimes..
Giants are now doing what we always should have been doing. Sign free agent pitchers do not draft them. You draft hitters and then they are forced to play here. No self respecting hitter is going to come to SF unless they have no other options or they’re overpaid.
You are right about most hitters not wanting to go to the O. But I totally disagree on drafting pitchers. I would always spend 2/3 of my draft capital on pitchers ever year. Think Timmy, Cain, etc. Also, there should be plenty of contact hitters that wouldn’t mind coming here. We still don’t play the game I would love to see here which would be a form of Billy Ball. But from what I have seen and read our batters are having a lot more patience at the plate than a lot of other teams and it’s paying off. i would have all our players spending time learning how to bunt also, that should be a requirement.
I disagree. I think you always need to be drafting pitchers. Timmy, Cain, Bum, are all great examples. More recent is Kyle Harris and Seth Corey as examples. I think you draft both. I’m confident in Z and crew making the right choices at draft time.
I’ve been saying that for years.
Totally agree with BF’s point.
Especially now when pitching trend is to rely less and less on starters than historically.
Pitchers are becoming commodities even more, they float around team to team, season to season to round out staffs…
Loo, the basket catch seems like Rick Barry’s free throwing, which was fun to watch. I think the 73 WS on TV was the only time I saw Mays play.
I’m as sick as anyone of seeing the endless replays of the ’54 catch and the grab by the fence with Bobby Bonds. There’s just so little video before the 70’s, I guess…
Being able to exercise years of control over quality young pitching is definitely an advantage in drafting them. The dodgers are paying Walker Buehler $8 mil total for this year and next and he isn’t FA til 2025. Same with Urias, who is only making $3mil and can’t be FA for 4 more years.
Don’t forget the knuckle scraper Tyler Rodgers contributions, without him they would not be in first place with his sorry ass ( besides Barager) relieving core. Rodgers is the All-star closer if it comes down to it..
Stix indicated he was thinking about setting up a gallery for his artwork. Is that why he paid for additional services? You can get a refund, if you buy into one of the premium plans
https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/
Would not bet against the Warriors but would not bet on them either. We would never beat them in 7 games but in a one game play-in this could be interesting. My money is still riding on the Suns at 24-1 so would really like to see Fakers lose to us and get forced to play the Jazz first. Suns likely beat us but I am ok with it if keeps my bet alive.
If no one saw the 538 piece…pretty interesting but portends our starters cant keep this up…

The perception that the Giants are giving up an inordinate number of bombs on sliders is backed up by the data:
https://tinyurl.com/4x4vee4r
It’s worse than the raw total of 14 shows because they throw relatively few sliders compared to the rest of MLB.
I was never asked to pay word press anything…
He bought the personal premium plan for a year:

Anything on Wilmet or Solano?
“There’s just so little video before the 70’s, I guess…”
So much footage was stupidly erased in those days.
Well, I don’t know if “stupid” is the right word. But incredibly short-sighted and tone-deaf. Meanwhile NFL films was filming EVERYTHING, preserving it all, and making awesome shows (and future collectible videos) out of the NFL footage. Football totally understood the concept of documenting their sport’s history as a way of promoting the sport. Baseball, as usual, was terrible in its understanding of how to market their sport.
Stix can’t seem to log in. I wonder if it has to do with his iMac but that would be odd. I tried to explain in an email how to find the log in space if one is on the page he’s looking at. Not sure if that helped, tho. As of now he’s locked out! Oh my God, the irony!!!! Well, here we go again: #FREESTIX!!!!!
My only issue is with my iPhone. My Mac i have no problem.
It could be a setting on his internet security. If it is set to too strong, it may not allow this. I know when I’m on my company VPN, it blocks a lot of stuff. But I don;t need to be on that all the time, so I simply shut it down.
my guess is he’s not using a gravatar based account to log on and WordPress has sold him space for his own blog (along with annoying ads, lol). Hope I’m wrong!
They used movie-quality cameras and shit, so the production and look of the NFL Films stuff was outstanding. Much better than the usual TV tape that was reused and taped over. But the Sabols were smart enough to warehouse the stuff, not burn/erase it.
Anyone could have done the same with baseball. There was TWIB, but I don’t know how much of that footage was kept. Prolly little. They would routinely just tape over the old footage.
There are stories in England that is much the same. Bands playing on Happenings with Lulu, Ready, Steady, Go and shows like that were ordered to reuse tapes after 2 weeks, so all those early bands like Hendrix, Clapton, the Byrds, the Animals, Pink Floyd and countless other bands were lost. Shame.
I used to watch ready, steady, go, every week. It got better when it became ready, steady goes live! (lip syncing ended)
Wiley LHP slated to start–shut Giants out for 5 when Reds were here earlier in a game they won 3-0. Imagine Slater takes lead off today, see how many other RHs Kapler has available. Likely only 5 inning or so guy so hopefully Belt OK to hit.
Maria Guardado said Barrels to be activated today and was on his way to Cincy last night.
Richmond SP Hjelle gave up 5 hits and 2 runs in 3 innings last night, walked 2 K’d 5. ERA is over 5.00 yuck
i hate computer problems. If Stix can get on another computer he could contact wordpress and figure it out by using their help section and contact them through email.
1. Austin Slater (R) CF
2. Buster Posey (R) C
3. Darin Ruf (R) 1B
4. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
5. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
6. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
7. Mauricio Dubon (R) SS
8. Mike Tauchman (L) LF
9. Kevin Gausman (L) P
I really don’t know what to make of Dubon.
He’s not a baby,
Turns 27 in July…
He’s MLB-level on defense, but the offense is too soft for today’s baseball, and the baserunning is terrible sometimes. He IS versatile on defense, which teams love nowadays, because of carrying so many pitchers on the roster. So his defense makes him worthwhile to have on the roster. But….if he’s starting a lot of games, that ain’t a good thing.
surprisingly intelligent play to cut down that runner rounding third base the other day
Like Slater and Duggar, he’d be more valuable if he either struck out less or walked more.
A player that can play infield and outfield well on defense has value. Former Dodger Hernandez and others like that. Hernandez has pop in his bat, though.
Yes, at the moment he’s about 3 hits or 5 walks away from a stat line SF would be pretty happy with carried over a full season.
The Giants are being patient with him. They like his potential.
I vaguely remember Dubon making one of those fake throws( maybe not taking a sure out at first and nailing a runner at 3rd at Oracle last year?
I like the aggressiveness, it’s really heads up out thinking a runner,a play a lot of players won’t even attempt to try.But if he screws the pooch on it, he will be in the managers office getting reemed a new one.
When a player 1st comes off the DL they seem to take the ball in their 1st start back.
With that in mind and the player is one of the best hitters,I’m predicting Donovan Solano will have 2 hits a double and a HR!!
Lee Evans dead at 74, part of great track team San Jose St.
I’d add Tauchman to James’ 1:10 list of guys who would be more valuable if they K’d less/walked more.
As a Giant he’s hitting .197, 2 bombs 1 SB OB barely above .300. Solid defensively, but expected a better hitter than another 8th place CF.
Angry Tiger Fan come a long way…..
Good for him!!!
It’s too bad Gausman won’t get to face the Dodgers this weekend. On the other hand, neither will Cueto. And the Giants will miss Kershaw.
The NY Post list Yaz as a possible trade target for the Yanks…
For who?
Deivi Garcia….
not enough
Estes is hilarious. He babbles, trying to keep up with Jon Miller, often offering nothing more than a weak description of the video replay on action Miller already has nailed.
I was just about to comment on how Miller seems as into his job as ever…
IMO, Kuiper now often seems disinterested or distracted…
that is the flip side, DJL, and probably the more positive way to look at it. As to Kuiper, I’ll bet he’s praying for a Krukow health-related retirement so he can go, too.
Good article on Ohtani’s exploits…
https://www.mlb.com/angels/news/shohei-ohtani-playing-like-mvp
Snarkk, you gotta admit that despite the Ks, we have seen a lot of really good plays in the field this year, especially by our team.
I’ll gladly admit that, I just want to see more…
That might be pressing the Giants’ luck …
A strange sequence … I still don’t understand how a professional athlete can run as slowly as some baseball players do.
I don’t understand how 350 pound men with huge stomachs (NFL lineman) aren’t regularly dropping dead on the field…
And some of them can probably outrun a few of the Giants …
A lot of those guys are actually in good shape.
I’d like to see a team vs team stat on how many runners score from 2nd base on a single. It seems like quite often for the Giants that the runner on second does not score on a single, for some reason…
That’s cause they’re all pulling up lame (Solano&Flores) getting to 3rd..
Kevin Gausman now hitting .176, his batterymate Curt Casali at a forgettable.094..
Great job by Gausman.
That’s the slider Wisler’s wishin’ for.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2021-baserunning-batting.shtml
If you sort the last column, you’ll see the Giants are at league average for number of runners scored from second on a single . . . before tonight.
The bad news is that they are below league avg. in percentage of base runners scored overall.
Uh oh, ZZ Top in to pitch…
Graig Nettles was every bit as good as Brooks Robinson.
Maybe better…
Nettles was great but 16 GG is even greater.
Nettles always seem to be second fiddle to Brooks until late in Robinson’s career when Nettles was better..
Great play by Longo to prevent a leadoff double..
I thought for a second it was Dubon who didn’t pick that, I was confused.
Going to Friday’s game with my son. Anyone else going? They got rid of the proof restrictions. Though we are both vaccinated.
Nice pick by Longo.
Littel I hope goes another inning.
My son, his girlfriend and a couple of their friends will be in the all-vax club level section down the LF line. How the hell will club level work now? Will the bars remain open to the end of the game? Anyway, you may spot them. They’ll wear Giants hats.
Oh boy. McGaaaaaaaaaaah warming up in the pen.
Somebody needs to crank one out now to go up by at least 2 …
Better McGoo pitches the 8th instead of the 9th.Maybe Kapler is finally getting it thats Rodgers should be the fulltime closer..
Come on Buster, drive somebody in.
Slater came up small…
Yessssssssssssss ! …
Slater didn’t help himself by swinging at ball 2, but that 1-1 strike was bullshit.
Buster clears ’em all!
another one I was wrong about: Posey
Giants were never honest about Posey’s hip injury. You can only go by what you see, and what the SF media scribes find out, which is usually not much…
How sweeeet it is!!
Buster clears the bases!!
Look at em run! This strategy of giving Buster regular days off looks like a winner.
Buster’s off-season of diaper changing/tosses have those hips working well.
Oh good. A walk
God, I hate those fucking fat shitbag cocksuckers behind the plate.
How many times can they keep using Rogers.
He had last night off, but at some point he’s got to get arm weary.
Supposedly the submariners can take a lot of abuse, I guess we’ll find out…
Kotter should have had someone else throwing once the Giants had their threat going…
Here we go…
Oh good. A hit an an error.
Looks like a strike 3 in my book.Grab some pine meat..
Is that Panda???
Nah, dude in the vid is in better shape…
It’s my mother…
Alright another win and another shutout to boot!
Let’s sweep 🧹 there asses tomorrow!!
Hard to shut out the Reds at that place.
Gausman was solid with not his best stuff.
This is already a good roadie; sweep tomorrow and make it really good…
W-I-N-S in Cincinnati.
On to some Warriors anxiety.
Steph needs to bag at least 40 to beat the Lakers.
Draymond has to do some defensive magic on Unibrow.
Steph’s recent history down there the last couple of years is not promising for this one…
hooooooooo!
5-2 on this roadie!
Should be 7-0
Yeah, well, no shit. Still a good thing.
Every team is going to get a no-hitter this season.
A 40 foot pull up jumper with 18 on the 24???
Steph being Steph
He’s 50% from 35’
Steph!!!!!!!
Steph the usual greatness coming out!
That last one at the buzzer unreal but real 💲
Ha! That shot before halftime was against 3 defenders!
66% from 35’
