A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Still In First Place, Barely

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 19, 2021

I mocked the signings of Gausman, Wood and Disco. Any of the 3 could legimately start the all star game. And all 3 should be on the team.

The Padres and Dodgers are coming that is a known fact but at least we are keeping this season interesting. Imagine what we could look forward to if Farhan fixes this bullpen?

Exciting game tonight in LA. We don’t match up too well vs a healthy Laker team but hey it’s all entertainment, right? There’s no way Steph gets an open look tonight but he doesn’t really need one and that will just open it up for other guys anyway. LA by 5 points? Yikes I wouldn’t bet a dollar against Curry and Draymond.

I just read something that I guess everyone here might already know.
The Giants entire starting rotation except for Webb is in their “walk” year.
We could be looking at the biggest roster turnover in team history…

Why I was hoping for major trade deadline deals for as many Gigantes as possible.

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 19, 2021 at 8:18 am

Yeah Loo, other than Cueto, I’d like to see SF offer extensions/new deal to Gausman Wood and DeSclafani at least, and not trade them. Beede is working to get back, but I don’t see SPs from inside system on near horizon. While pen is certainly major issue, more effective innings you can get out of starters obviously mproves chance t play winning baseball. I can’t see letting these guys walk and trying to find 3 good SPs all over again 2022..

This is a good situation for the Giants to be in. Pretty sure they will all want at least a 3 year commitment. At this stage I would give it to them. We will have some homegrown talent up here pretty soon but until then…keep this party going.

Yeah, these were all play-to-pay deals. We can hopefully keep 2 but 3 would be great. Gasman and Wood. Let’s see how they hold up.

Giants are now doing what we always should have been doing. Sign free agent pitchers do not draft them. You draft hitters and then they are forced to play here. No self respecting hitter is going to come to SF unless they have no other options or they’re overpaid.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on May 19, 2021 at 8:42 am

You are right about most hitters not wanting to go to the O. But I totally disagree on drafting pitchers. I would always spend 2/3 of my draft capital on pitchers ever year. Think Timmy, Cain, etc. Also, there should be plenty of contact hitters that wouldn’t mind coming here. We still don’t play the game I would love to see here which would be a form of Billy Ball. But from what I have seen and read our batters are having a lot more patience at the plate than a lot of other teams and it’s paying off. i would have all our players spending time learning how to bunt also, that should be a requirement.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 19, 2021 at 9:26 am

I disagree. I think you always need to be drafting pitchers. Timmy, Cain, Bum, are all great examples. More recent is Kyle Harris and Seth Corey as examples. I think you draft both. I’m confident in Z and crew making the right choices at draft time.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 19, 2021 at 10:11 am

I’ve been saying that for years.
      Totally agree with BF’s point.
Especially now when pitching trend is to rely less and less on starters than historically.
Pitchers are becoming commodities even more, they float around team to team, season to season to round out staffs…

Loo, the basket catch seems like Rick Barry’s free throwing, which was fun to watch. I think the 73 WS on TV was the only time I saw Mays play.

I’m as sick as anyone of seeing the endless replays of the ’54 catch and the grab by the fence with Bobby Bonds. There’s just so little video before the 70’s, I guess…

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 19, 2021 at 8:43 am

Being able to exercise years of control over quality young pitching is definitely an advantage in drafting them. The dodgers are paying Walker Buehler $8 mil total for this year and next and he isn’t FA til 2025. Same with Urias, who is only making $3mil and can’t be FA for 4 more years.

Would not bet against the Warriors but would not bet on them either. We would never beat them in 7 games but in a one game play-in this could be interesting. My money is still riding on the Suns at 24-1 so would really like to see Fakers lose to us and get forced to play the Jazz first. Suns likely beat us but I am ok with it if keeps my bet alive.

If no one saw the 538 piece…pretty interesting but portends our starters cant keep this up…

The perception that the Giants are giving up an inordinate number of bombs on sliders is backed up by the data:

It’s worse than the raw total of 14 shows because they throw relatively few sliders compared to the rest of MLB.

So much footage was stupidly erased in those days.
Well, I don’t know if “stupid” is the right word. But incredibly short-sighted and tone-deaf. Meanwhile NFL films was filming EVERYTHING, preserving it all, and making awesome shows (and future collectible videos) out of the NFL footage. Football totally understood the concept of documenting their sport’s history as a way of promoting the sport. Baseball, as usual, was terrible in its understanding of how to market their sport.

They used movie-quality cameras and shit, so the production and look of the NFL Films stuff was outstanding. Much better than the usual TV tape that was reused and taped over. But the Sabols were smart enough to warehouse the stuff, not burn/erase it.

Anyone could have done the same with baseball. There was TWIB, but I don’t know how much of that footage was kept. Prolly little. They would routinely just tape over the old footage.

There are stories in England that is much the same. Bands playing on Happenings with Lulu, Ready, Steady, Go and shows like that were ordered to reuse tapes after 2 weeks, so all those early bands like Hendrix, Clapton, the Byrds, the Animals, Pink Floyd and countless other bands were lost. Shame.

He’s MLB-level on defense, but the offense is too soft for today’s baseball, and the baserunning is terrible sometimes. He IS versatile on defense, which teams love nowadays, because of carrying so many pitchers on the roster. So his defense makes him worthwhile to have on the roster. But….if he’s starting a lot of games, that ain’t a good thing.

Steph needs to bag at least 40 to beat the Lakers.
Draymond has to do some defensive magic on Unibrow.
Steph’s recent history down there the last couple of years is not promising for this one…
