A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Sent To An Early Grave

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 24, 2022

I’m really gonna miss that dude. Not so much for the bat but definitely the nickname and how funny it was to tout him and watch so many Flappers freak out about it. Sadly, Gonzalez has really made GD unnecessary at this point. But speed goes a long way, even in a Hell, and that’s exactly where many of you will meet up with our hero again. If you ever doubted his powers, even for a second…..you’re doomed. Sleep soundly for now but a fate far greater than a trade or even a DFA awaits you….

“our hero”–for Flav Loo and SanDog certainly.
bottom line ,though 2022 off to slow start (7-34) overall numbers for 2021 for GD look quite respectable, OPS+ of 106 (above league average), OPS of .768 etc.
Problem is, splits tell different story with great start and big drop off that caused him to be sent down to Sac
    .
First 2 months, 130 ABs 42 hits 18 XBHs 16 BBs, May and June OPS over .900 in each month.
July August rest of year, next 130 ABs, 26 hits ( read “Mendoza line”) 8 XBHS 10 BBs .260 OB.

So challenge is to regain whatever was going on those early months of 2021 in new environment. Lot better numbers platooning 2021 (.845 OPS vs. RHP, .636 vs. LHP). Low cost experiment for team that could be on rise in couple years, vs. overcrowded LH OF in SF coming off Division win and trying to repeat.

There is a potential downside to losing GD though–Giants are not exactly flush with CF options should Yaz get hurt. Slater has been mostly platoon hitter. The others, Joc Wade Jr and Gonzalez, aren’t CFs either.

  3. Winder said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:15 am

Difference between this year and last is we are losing a lot more of the close games.

  4. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:46 am

Kapler’s the one that’s getting schooled late in some games. He can drive me crazy with his bullpen preferences.
If you have a pitcher mowing down 3 hitters in 8-9 pitches( yes it does occasionally happen)!why not give him a second inning of work instead of watching the next pitcher blowup and lose the lead are worst the game..
It’s crap a set BP late,MIX IT UP, why can’t a pitcher given the chance just be as effective in later innings then the 5-6 inning?

  5. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:59 am

He’s slow to have people ready should the current guy go south. He’s a matchup fiend, yet doesn’t make the switch a lot of the time. And even though we had , by numbers, the best pen in the league, it sure didn’t feel like it.

They all have regressed for the most part, and we ARE losing the close ones. You can tout Rogers’ numbers till the cows come home, but his WHIP doesn’t lie. 1.41 ain’t gonna cut it. Pitching to contact is all well and good, in the 7th inning, but he should not be in high leverage situations anymore.

Willie Calhoun and his .136 average and one homer just what the doctor ordered…not!!!

    • unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2022 at 10:54 am

He’s got options!!! Seems to be the criteria most wanted by this front office.

  7. willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 12:33 pm

GD has option left for this year too. It’s spot on 40 man Giants didn’t want to give him and they don’t have to with Calhoun since Rangers had DFA’d him and he cleared waivers.
Looking at 40 for Giants, position players on fringe are Vosler Ramos Y Mercedes guy they just added and Bart, plus Walton.
Lot more pitchers, including Boyd Delaplane Santos Castro Hjelle Marte and Llovera.

I gotta make an appearance to pay my final respects to our boy Graveduggar. Yeah, it was a bit of a gimmick when I first started hyping him, but I did think he played a great center field and loved how he moved about the field with a certain grace and style.
And then when he actually did go on a bit of a run there and made some nice contributions, that was a helluva ride. I wish the guy the best and still hold out hope that he can turn into a poor man’s Rick Miller, or be a solid reserve outfielder who hangs around for a few years.
    Thanks for the memories GD!

Go Giants! Love Z. Love Kap. Love that we are getting our financial house in order and are again somehow winning games with a patchwork roster. If we fall back, I hope they bring Bart back up and trot him out there 5 days a week. I’m not ready to give up on him yet.
And of course holding out hope that the farm system will start producing some studs before too long, so we can really build a perennial winner.
And I still can’t stand Kuiper and Krukow. And Lopez ain’t high on my list either. Estes I can tolerate a bit. And Flemming is still my main man.

I hope you all are doing well.

      Good to hear from you!

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2022 at 1:25 pm

I didn’t realize how much I’d missed the calming influence of a San Dawg post till i read this!

      • willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 2:49 pm

        Absolutely!

  9. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2022 at 1:32 pm

Hah! I was just gonna post “Where the fuck is Sandawg???”

I’m not nearly as happy as you but I get the direction going forward. Still kinda pisses me off that they are leaving guys like Villar down on the farm while hologram guys like Fairchild, Papierski, and Padlo come and go like a fart in the wind. Gonzalez was a great find, but they’ve missed on a whole bunch, and they could have done a little better getting (Ohtani) real talent.

This is for Flav. This iteration of the dead (post-Pigpen: pre-Donna) is about my fave. Funny the first song they played this day they played at the Shoreline last Tuesday.

    Love Tennessee Jed.

Good to hear from ya SanDawg! Summers here time to fire up the old Harvey Mobile for a road trip?

Really want to know since I’m dazed and confused lol not the first time( cue up Led Zeppelin )why the Giants keep Pitchers Delplane &Boyd on the 40 man roster when it’s pretty obvious with they’re latest setbacks with arm injuries there not pitching this season.Guess they feel they would lose them if they try to sneak them thru DFA wires, but you can’t do that either right? cause a player can’t be released while injured?
Roster spots are crucial on the 40 man, though only 14 are eligible to be called up on a 26 man roster,so really they’re only playing with 12 spots, with these 2 guys being useless? am I right?are more confused 🫤
Certainly hurts David Villar’s chances since he’s not on the 40 and Corky Calhoun either, but he has leverage being a Kappy guy from Dogpile days..

  12. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2022 at 3:19 pm

    Haystacks Calhoun even.

Anyhow, this is some cool shit. Tom Brookshier AND John Facenda.

    • willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 6:45 pm

Thanks Chuck that was great. Old school highlights are fantastic, with all the old unis and helmets Bears Colts Rams, and fields with lines in end zone. The Redskins are there around 2 minute mark, dark helmet with white feather running down back.
      John Facenda!

He’s actually slimmer and better looking than I remember him…

  15. Winder said, on June 24, 2022 at 4:11 pm

I saw some games there. What I remember is the place was really rowdy, loud, and in winter fucking cold. I was lucky enough to see some pretty muddy games. I thought they were great but I bet the players didn’t think that.

    • Winder said, on June 24, 2022 at 4:13 pm

Oops, thought I was on chuck’s blog. Talking about Kezar.

  19. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 5:00 pm

Panda packing 3 bills nowadays lol just TRUCKED that poor catcher! Rules at the plate sure don’t apply in Mexico..

“Dead Flowers” by Stones was good one. Live “official” version has nice solo by Mick Taylor, hella guitar player.
“won’t forget to put roses on your grave”

  24. James said, on June 24, 2022 at 7:40 pm

An error on Crawford not called, a K not called. Cobb looks unhittable, he makes one “mistake” and he’s down a run. This really is looking like a bad penny year.

    • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2022 at 7:57 pm

      Was last year fool’s gold?

      • James said, on June 24, 2022 at 7:59 pm

No, but it was an example of theory aligning perfectly with practice.

  25. Macdog said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:30 pm

Longo gets a hit other than a single.

  26. willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:34 pm

    Old guys gotta get rolling.
Belt has 1 HR in total for May and June, 57 ABs. 2 doubles as well.

  27. James said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:38 pm

Even years are catcher’s interference years.

  28. James said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:44 pm

Crawford’s defense is pissing away this game.

  29. willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:44 pm

Krukow, effing be real man. That’s 2 errant throws tonight already that have cost Cobb couple runs.
I dunno what’s wrong with him, but his entire game has fallen off cliff.

  30. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:45 pm

Shit ass throw home by Crawford.Runner was deadest with an accurate throw!

  31. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:46 pm

    Dead meat

  32. Macdog said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:50 pm

That throw by Craw was as bad as one of his slides.

  33. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 8:54 pm

Damm lucky to hold that to one run.See Brebbia ‘s face that was pretty funny on Farmer’s scoured shot to Longo to end the inning. Yeah Father Time starting to ketchup with Crawford especially how much he plays with little backup support..

  34. mrsprtdude said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:22 pm

What a sad sight. Panda literally hit that guy with his stomach just like the movie. Hilarious if it wasn’t sad. Benjie Molina was a very good hitter. I always thought in the end how lucky were that Molina couldn’t keep his fat ass from the training table or we would have never seen Posey in 2010…
I’m going to echo Sandog! Go Giants!

  35. willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:28 pm

Coming in Reds team ERA was 5.38–dead last in all baseball. Giants have 3 hits here in 7th inning.
As Belt K’s for 3rd time tonight yikes

  36. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:31 pm

This team this year is really what they thought they were gonna be last year. Old and slow.

  37. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:40 pm

Shit their the same old team as they were with Bochy’s last year. Not much changes on this roster except age increase.

  38. willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:40 pm

“Flores is gonna step in for Donovan Walton.”
best news I’ve heard all night. One of those guys is real ML hitter.
    and Wilmet promptly delivers

    • Macdog said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:50 pm

Yep, what’s the point starting lefty vs RHP when the lefty sycks?

  39. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:44 pm

Gee didn’t see that coming. Take the fastball down the fucking pipe and hit the shit pitch to the pitcher.

  40. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2022 at 9:53 pm

Atleast Marte’s looked sharp out of the pen throwing heat.Which means he was too effective and will be sent down tomorrow..

  41. zumiee said, on June 24, 2022 at 10:06 pm

A total stiff, Strickland, getting the save is the capper on the crud game tonight.

  42. Macdog said, on June 24, 2022 at 10:07 pm

At least they didn’t lose by 1 run again.

  43. zumiee said, on June 24, 2022 at 10:13 pm

The Kings, drafting at #4, picked a player I’ve never heard of, but then I don’t follow college basketball much.
The #1 pick in the draft was from Duke. How often do Duke draft picks turn out to be great picks? I’m going to say not very often.

    • willedav said, on June 24, 2022 at 10:46 pm

Oh man Zum I like Keegan Murray a lot. Saw lot of Big 10 and was very impressive. Not flashy but smart and under control and unselfish.

  44. zumiee said, on June 24, 2022 at 10:15 pm

The Bore Core had an amazing renaissance last season, but now Posey’s gone, and Craw and Belt have reverted back to Bore Core status.
