A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Today Has To Be Better Than Yesterday

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 3, 2022

Yesterday was tough. I can swallow Farhan not doing a big add-on deal. As I said, even with some creativity by packaging Rodon prospects with our prospects we didn’t have anything to include like Gore/Voit and the Padres just offered the better deal. But to not trade Rodon or Joc at all was just deflating, man. Why keep Rodon for 8 more meaningless starts? He has value, don’t give me this shit about *there were no offers*. Farhan did what he always does. He dumpster dove.

Couple that with the real life sadness of the passing of Vin Scully and Kat’s buddy’s wife…..then the Giants lose another game in this lost season….

it was just a very bad day.

I wonder if last year’s off the charts aberration of a season might have somehow screwed up Z’s long term plans.
Looking at the rosters of the Dodgers and Padres makes it feel like the 70’s when I pretty much knew going into the season that the Dodgers and Reds (in the old NL West) were so much better than the Giants who would likely be out of contention before June.

    • Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 6:34 am

      i’m sure that’s true.

    • Winder said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:02 am

The 70’s were really discouraging to be a Giants fan. We had the players to make a strong team but gave them all away. Maddux, Mathews, Kingman, and so forth. I believe just about any or our 70’s teams could outplay our current team. It’s just sad to see the quality of ball we are playing right now.

Rough night for Slater (as opposed to Dogs leadoff guy who continues to torment them), who is not a Baggs fav. check out this one: “It’s times like these when I wonder why the heck Bryce Johnson is still in Sac and not making catchable plays in SF.”

    • Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 6:53 am

probably because he sucks? It is disconcerting that we can’t seem to get any minor leaguers up here to produce for more than like a week before the league adjusts and they drift away into Bowker Oblivion

      • willedav said, on August 3, 2022 at 8:15 am

Johnson’s numbers at Sac this year: .283/.352/.397 for .749 OPS. 5 HRs in 240 ABs, 24 SBs. Seems like more of D specialist who can run than much of a hitter. Seen Baggs rag on Slater before for errors missed catches and poor throws, not unjustified.
        “Bowker Oblivion”, good one.

      • snarkk said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:00 am

Why do many other teams seem to be capable of developing solid, athletic, defensively AND offensively capable major league OFers internally on a regular basis — and the Giants can’t? I don’t get it…

      • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 10:01 am

Well we did draft Duval and Reynolds . . .

      • Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 12:05 pm

drafting and developing are two totally different things

  3. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 8:08 am

Wilderness years part ll. Hard to believe they got to this point without moving Rodon at least.

At least football season is closing in. This looks to be a pretty awesome season. Finally have a solid defensive backfield to go along with our stellar defensive line and linebackers.

  4. willedav said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:28 am

Next week Giants will be in Petco to see new and improved Pads As Xoot said, man did Melvin make good decision to join team.

  5. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 10:04 am

Scrappy team? Hey, why not. Crappy team? Pass.

If they suddenly played defense worth a damn, they might crawl back into the race but it sure don’t seeem likely.

Odd to me is how bad Slater is this season. His defense has fallen off the table. Grave Digger’s ghost is haunting the OF.

  6. Bozo said, on August 3, 2022 at 10:09 am

I have to think that the Dodger organization must really miss Zaidi’s stockpiling prospects and waiver wire wheeling and dealing. I bet they cry themselves to sleep just thinking about a top of the lineup being Betts, T.Turner, Freeman, and Will Smith.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 10:24 am

Well, they got Betts by trading picks Farhan made. IIRC.

      • Bozo said, on August 3, 2022 at 11:30 am

One out of three aint bad, Unca. Friedman made that trade for Betts and Price in 2020. One of the 3 sent to Boston, Connor Wong (C and 2B), was a Zaidi pick. Alex Verdugo was a Colletti guy and Jeter Downs was part of the trade Friedman made the month after Zaidi left LA. That trade was Downs and Bailey for Farmer, Kemp, Puig and our very own Alex Wood.

Whatever, give me a player like Betts leading off and trade away the Slaters.

  7. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 10:28 am

He didn’t do so bad in his time with the Dogs. These are just his 1st round icks.

    2016: Gavin Lux (20th), Will Smith (32nd)

    2015: Walker Buehler (24th), Kyle Funkhouser (35th)

    • Bozo said, on August 3, 2022 at 11:36 am

True, but they sure didn’t need to replace Zaidi, so maybe Friedman was the guiding hand behind the moves.

Sorry, I’m just still pissed off when I thought this deadline would have been a great time to make some moves with next year in mind.

  8. Macdog said, on August 3, 2022 at 11:09 am

If only Gerrit Cole had pitched yesterday and got lit up instead of today, maybe Yanks would’ve been desperate for Rodon.

  9. Lurker John said, on August 3, 2022 at 11:17 am

I just wanted to comment on Vin Scully’s passing. My family lived in Goleta from the late ’70’s into the mid-’80’s, which, at the time, was a market for the Dodgers and Angels, with the Giants nowhere to be found, unless they were playing the dog pile. Anyway, I started watching and listening to a ton of Dodgers games and really came to appreciate Vin Scully for how great he truly was (Dick Enberg too, for that matter). A phenomenal voice, and tremendous knowledge of the rhythms and history of the game and an unequaled ability to weave the most amazing stories into his broadcasts. Jon Miller does a great impersonation of that particular aspect of his broadcasting style.

I always found him to be as unbiased as any hometown broadcaster could be, especially given some of the clowns we have now. The man just loved baseball and spent his life describing it to millions of appreciative fans. Believe me, I hate the Dodgers as much as any Giants’ fan and if he’d given me any reason to despise him with chronic homerism, I’d have jumped on it, but he didn’t.

Chuck mentioned his work in football yesterday, and I also remember a number of 49ers games on network TV he did over the years. Dare I say he was as good calling football as he was calling baseball. IIRC, he also did golf.

I’m sorry he’s gone because he was a throwback to the golden age of radio broadcasting, something we’ll probably never see again. An amazing talent and man.

    RIP, Vin.

  10. Lurker John said, on August 3, 2022 at 11:18 am

I’m not even going to comment on the shit show the Giants season has become. Yesterday was pretty disappointing. The wheels have come off and that’s obvious to anyone paying attention. I’ve all but checked out at this point. Bring on the Niners.

    • Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 12:09 pm

the wheels have come off and Zaidi is still talking like they’re a playoff team as long as they start playing better D. LMFAO. Look, last year was last year. This year they suck. Holding on to Rondon was stupid. Shit he could have traded him and then signed him back in the Winter time if he really wanted to keep him long term. A’s did that with Rickey

  11. sandog said, on August 3, 2022 at 11:22 am

Oh man Flav, and then on top of all that, I accused you of posting that Raiders to Vegas was a bad idea.
I’m sorry, I guess I should have done my research first. But that ain’t my style. I’m a guy who likes to shoot from the hip and crank out hot takes on the fly.

    • Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 12:07 pm

thank you San Dawg, it’s nice to be vindicated.

    • willedav said, on August 3, 2022 at 5:23 pm

mm as you can tell from his post, Flav was responding to my take doubting enough locals in Vegas would come to stadium to watch Raiders. Instead it’s turned into quite sports town. Hope the A’s can stay in Oakland and maybe Vegas gets expansion team.

Flavor thanks for the shoutout of my buddy Steve and his loss of his wife Linda.
She has been ill for a few years with a bad heart condition, now hopefully she will find peace, even though he’s suffering with a broken heart 💔 right now..

Yeah I didn’t know about any Giants deadline activity yesterday and when I found out they didn’t do shit it made me even more sad and frustrated. I agree with you, LJ and many other flappers that they should of traded Rodon&Joc who are both truly rentals for prospects it just sucks playing out the string this year with a bunch of rejects playing terrible defense, an offense that’s offensive to mostly watch with RISP..( still can’t believe there too 5-6 in runs scored?) a BP that’s unwatchable as well.Yes yesterday sucked for a lot of reasons..

  13. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 1:07 pm

Streameast is pretty much kaput, so I can’t watch anyway.

  14. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 3:21 pm

Sorry to hear that, AK. Losing too many people these days. It really stinks.

Thanks Chuck, yeah it really stinks losing people close to are ages.Hell she was only 66 and I’ll turn that later this month! As they say live for today cause they’re no guarantees for tomorrow..

  15. xoot said, on August 3, 2022 at 4:09 pm

Saw Slusser report that JD Davis’s “surgically repaired left hand (ligament) is almost entirely healed, scar tissue basically gone,” and immediately the name Mark DeRosa came to mind. Hope not.

  16. willedav said, on August 3, 2022 at 4:31 pm

Looks like Baggs got his wish. Bryce Johnson is up and starting in CF. Vosler and Long down to Sac, J D here.
    Slater RF
    Flores 2b
    Belt 1b
    Mercedes DH
    Davis 3b
    Gonzalez LF
    Bart C
    Machado SS
    Johnson CF
    Cobb P

    • xoot said, on August 3, 2022 at 4:47 pm

Slater in RF is a typo, isn’t it? Isn’t it?

Bryce Johnson another one of our aging “kids” who languish in the minors – probably for good reasons.
    Turns 27 in October…

  18. James said, on August 3, 2022 at 7:05 pm

I look at Sam Long and Jose Urias and can’t understand why one is so successful and the other isn’t. Does one really have that much better command of his pitches? Urias’ curveball does not break more than Long’s and he doesn’t throw harder or with more movement on the fastball, at least as far as I can discern on TV. I’m sure the AI knows. And the players.

    • djloo27 said, on August 3, 2022 at 7:22 pm

Maybe at that level a slight difference can make a very big difference.

  19. James said, on August 3, 2022 at 7:19 pm

I also do not understand how Alex Cobb gives up so many runs, even with a terrible defense. He‘s closer to Kevin Brown than Smarge. On TV.

    • Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 7:27 pm

i don’t get it either. He should be getting way more swing and misses

  20. Flavor said, on August 3, 2022 at 7:22 pm

i was never the biggest Vin Scully fan. He was good but I never jizzed about him like so many others. This was fun to listen to. 3 Years b4 i was born but still fun for me to listen to.

  21. xoot said, on August 3, 2022 at 7:52 pm

Wow, JD Davis is an upgrade. He made the nightly failed play at the plate a lot more exciting than it has been lately.

  22. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 8:32 pm

Huh. Permanently suspended from Twitter. No idea what I did. Me and the Donald. Who’d a thunk?

      • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:10 pm

lol Guilty on Greene and a few other rando things. Not enough to get permanently suspended though.

  23. alleykat69 said, on August 3, 2022 at 8:57 pm

Figured one guy I wanted at the deadline Brandon Drury hits a Grandslam in his 1st game.
But hey we have another chump in JD Davis to take up the slack instead Oh wait he just raised his chump value with a hit..Woopee

  24. unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:04 pm

    • xoot said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:21 pm

Mookie couldn’t believe his good fortune. He had so much momentum coming in as he caught the popup, he was able to take something off the throw to be sure the guy at 2B would handle it.

    • James said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:33 pm

He didn’t want to wind up at third on a base hit and risk your anger, even if you have been silenced on a much larger platform.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:36 pm

It’s a fucking sac fly. He got doubled off 2nd on a sac fly. I don’t know what you are talking about.

      • xoot said, on August 3, 2022 at 9:47 pm

apparently he thought Mookie Betts was slow and inept and unable to catch a popup a LLeaguer could handle.

  57. Matthew Greedy said, on August 5, 2022 at 6:57 pm

The strategy of the Giant’s owner Greg Johnson and his dad prior was to get Farhan Zaidi because he is great at dumpster diving. They wanted to create just a good enough team to keep fans interested. Now when you go to Oracle and see all the high rises built next to the stadium by Mr. Johnson, it is clear that his financial priorities are to control labor costs regarding the Giants and spend his money elsewhere.

So for the last few years, they have always come up short on getting big-name expense players. Bryce Harper is just one example. They just pretend that they are serious about keeping up with the Dodgers. Heck, they are not keeping up with the Padres, and the Giants have more money than the Padres. The Giants ownership group is not like the Warriors ownership group. They just want to placate Giants fans like last year, and hope they get lucky and get to the playoff. Farhan Zaidi is great at his job, but come on, you will not win another championship by dumpster diving, no matter how good you are at it.
