A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Those pesky Dodgers….

Posted in Uncategorized by zumiee on July 22, 2012

John Nance “Cactus Jack” Garner, U.S. Vice President from 1933-1941, once famously said: “The Vice Presidency isn’t worth a warm bucket of spit.” Well, a Wild Card spot isn’t quite that bad, but it sure ain’t what it used to be. It’s all about winning the division title these days, and it looks to be a classic Giant/Dodger battle for the division crown in 2012. There are a lot of ways to compare the Giants and Dodgers at this point of the season- their strengths, and also the things that need improvement. But another way to compare them is the schedule they both have to play the rest of the way. Who does the schedule favor?

And speaking of baseball schedules (if I may digress), I dig baseball schedules in all their incarnations. Especially pocket schedules and refrigerator magnet schedules. Whenever I’m doubting the human race, I try to remember that a species that invented baseball and refrigerator magnet schedules can’t be all bad. At the beginning of the season, it all comes down to what the Jimmy Fallon character says in the movie “Fever Pitch”: “A new season is a clean slate.” And here we are now, with over half the slate now turned into boxscores. The Giants have 36 homegames left, 32 roadgames. The Dodgers have 32 homegames left, 35 roadgames. The Giants have a few more games left against under-.500 teams than the Dodgers do (although that depends on what the opponents’ records are at any given moment, of course.) So, it’s a modest advantage to the Giants regarding the schedules, except….for those last 3 games of the season being at Dodger Stadium. But, on the other hand, by a fluke of the MLB scheduling computer, L.A. has 8 games to play against the Cardinals left on the schedule, after already having played them 3 times earlier in the season; while the Giants have 3 games left with the lowly Astros, after already having played them 6 times.

Will the Dodger pitching hold up? Will Kemp keep up a torrid pace for the next 2+ months? Will the Dodgers get Dempster? How concerned are you about the Dodgers?

“How concerned are you about the Dodgers?”
I might be in denial and this may come back and bite me on the ass, but for some reason I haven’t been thinking about Dogtown much. If we lose I check and see what they did and I have to keep up a bit because my wife works with a Dodger fan. Actually, that’s pretty weird if you think about, the only Dodger fan that I know of out here works with the wife. My buddy done the street played HS ball with Hammaker so he follows the Giants a bit (huge Nats fan), another guy down the street was stationed in the East Bay, so he follows them. And, Gaylord Perry used to live close by so I imagine there are a few other Giant fans around but Dodgers? Just the one guy that I know of.
Anyway, I really don’t see them going down to the wire with us. I guess if the new ownership opens up the collective wallet, they could get what they need. Although our old cousin Ned hasn’t really had a great track record in the past, so we’ll see. The Giants are in control and seem to be gelling right now. The WC should just be an afterthought for them, the Division is theirs to be had. So fuck the Dodgers and fuck the Snakes too while you’re at it, let’s go out and win the whole damn thing, again.

The dogers value, as a team, went up 75% with the recent purchase and their debt/value is quite high as well. One hell of a wallet Mega Big Flavor Shady is talkin’ about.

Fantastic thread, Zumie. To immediately answer your question, i would say that I am not worried about the Dodgers THIS year. Ultimately, they will be turning themselves into The California Yankees and we will have to sit by and watch them add 100-200+ million dollar contracts. But as we’ve seen with the Yankees, that doesn’t guarantee you anything. In fact, it will just make the rivalry that much better as well as make the west coast more *worthy* of ESPN time. To counter their expected brazen fiscal ways we just have to do two things: draft well and make smart, cost effective FA signings. But anyway, I’m digressing from the today’s thread so back to that….
The Dodgers have 2 position players that I would prefer over any of our 8: Kemp and Ethier. And I would throw Dee Gordon on to that list too but he’s gone for at least 3 or 4 more weeks……
Comparing starting rotations isn’t even worth my time. They have Kershaw and that’s it. Harang and Capuano are pitching well this year but they’re over their head, in my opinion. Especially Cap.
Their bullpen is messy right now and I prefer ours in terms of *known roles*. I know that sounds crazy with the uncertainty of our closer but the fact is, almost all of our guys can come into the 7-8-9 and do the job reliably. Having said that, Jansen is tough and we don’t have anyone on our roster to match his *stuff*.
Sure, they could add players. Dempster is off the table right now. They will take a shot at Garza but he left a recent start with an elbow issue. The fact is, adding players is more exciting for the fans than it is in terms of actual impact on wins and losses. Who thought Cody Ross would have impacted the 2010 season the way he did? If you could somehow combine the last 2 years and were asked (with the benefit of hindsight) who you would trade Zack Wheeler for, Ross or Beltran, which would be the obvious choice?
And I’ll close this post with this: You said, “Whenever I’m doubting the human race, I try to remember that a species that invented baseball and refrigerator magnet schedules can’t be all bad.”
That is a brilliant line, Zumie. One of my best friends in the world is Scott Lamm. BLADE might recognize the last name, his dad was governor of Colorado for many years. He was at the theater in Colorado the night of the massacre. His movie let out at 10pm. And as thankful as his friends and family are that he *left the theater alive* that night (seriously, how ridiculous is that to even say?) it’s impossible to not perseverate on all of those who didn’t. And the more that comes out about the gunman, the harder this is to understand……
So I’m gonna stop trying to figure it all out and focus instead on the magic and intrigue of the refrigerator magnet. And baseball–10:35am game time. And I have you to thank for that, Zumie……..

Flav, I’m glad to hear that your friend, Scott, attended the earlier showing . . . I was in the SF bay area and hadn’t moved out here yet, when his father was governor (for over a dozen years in the 1970s and 1980s). However, anyone who knows about Colorado politics, understands that Dick Lamm was a maverick democrat that walked his talk, frequently paying a high price politically and personally for some of his ideas that were far to the left of the mainstream. Regardless of whether you agreed with him or not, you always knew he was sincere about what he believed in.

This has been an extremely difficult time for the people of Colorado. Yesterday, I took a date to a matinee showing of The Amazing Spiderman at the Century 16 in Belmar, near where I live, and we were the ONLY ones in that theater . . . Seriously.

Waiting for the movie to start, we participated in a bit of gallows humor, e.g., “Good thing we selected this movie, huh?” Conversely, we also empathized with the theater workers, telling them that their co-workers at the Aurora Century 16 were in our thoughts and prayers. Everyone was doing this. Similarly, we, along with other movie attendees made a point of saying hello to the two police officers standing guard in the lobby, thanking them for their service to the community. Quite frankly, many people deal with tragedy in a number of ways . . . black humor, silence, grief, sadness, anger, resentment, etc. There is no right way to process it.

One thing I won’t do is watch CNN or the other 24/7 news channels. I understand why people do it, but for me personally, it’s self-destructive spiritually. The last time I did that was during the first Iraq war. No more. For me, it promotes fear and negativity. Essentially, light trumps fear. I choose to focus on “light.”

Baseball is part of the “light” and I am grateful for that.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2012 at 7:30 am

Scott told me once that his dad’s nickname was “Governor Gloom”– I think that’s what it was, I can’t remember for sure. I don’t watch CNN either, for the reasons you cited. In fact, the worst part about this tragedy is that it virtually guarantees that a copy cat attempt is coming. This guy was the classic person that *nobody remembers*–well, they’ll remember him now. That’s always the intended fallout of these lunatics…….

I was *out of it* yesterday so I’ll respond to a couple of things from yesterday’s thread:
    1) Dennis, I threw my support behind a Broxton pick up a few days ago. I think the Mets might offer more so I don’t think it’s going to happen but I bet Sabean is kicking the tires on this idea. And with uncertainty in the closer position, it’s a no-lose pick up (since he would be a fine 8th inning guy, too)
    2) If Belt is going to keep (not) hitting like this then I might have to flip flop back to being ok with Huff getting a few starts
    3) A couple of you need to re-visit the “Flapper Code of Conduct” page to the right. If you want to know how you get deleted (or how to NOT get your post deleted) then check it out—it’s on the right side of the main page under the tab “Room B and Other Outstanding Stuff”

I think flav makes a good point about Dodgers “this year.” I think Sf is much better team overall–position players outside of Kemp and Ethier, SPs, and the pen. Gordon has been erratic in the field and doesn’t hit much–crawford has been better, tho I realize he isn’t going to hit slams and 3 run bombs like lately.
Next year, tho look out. Besides losing out to SF for the division and possibly not making the playoffs, they also have big spending Angels and their superstars to contend with on local angle. I predict major house cleaning of dead weight, and they have holes at almost every position on the IF plus LF. None of the players they have brought up to fill same have hit much, tho maybe the Herrera kid gets a shot somewhere. Given state of their farm system, big splash signings might be their only short term option to get back into contention. Nobody in LA wants to hear “rebuilding mode.”
One more advantage for SF—bochy over mattingly, esp in terms of pen management, a very critical area these days. I don’t think SF needs Broxton at all; Hembree as a late call up should do fine as complimentary addition to what is already a great and well coached unit.
gotta admit I’m fascinated by what is happening to yanks across the bay…hopefully it portends things to come when they have to come here in october.

    .

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2012 at 7:27 am

yeah, what’s *happening* to the Yankees, and to the Red Sox, is fascinating. That’s one reason I watch as many Yankee games as I can. I think *they* are fascinating and I’m not talking about the team as much as I am the brand.
And both of those AL East teams are good examples of why spending money and/or taking on big contracts via trades doesn’t guarantee you shit.
      I wouldn’t count on Hembree, I think he’s still hurt…
Broxton would be more of an insurance policy. If Casilla can’t get it together (and I think he’s going to, btw) then we really don’t have anyone. Romo and his 2 braced knees? Please. Affeldt is fine doing what he’s doing but I don’t think *closer* is his mentality.
Myers was traded for peanuts, I know Broxton would cost more but it’s a trade I’d make if I could……

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 22, 2012 at 7:46 am

I have Jarrod Parker on both of my FL teams. I almost sat him because he was going against the Yankees, then I saw they were playing in Oakland and I said no fucking way. WillieD correct me if I am wrong, but my reasoning was because I perceive the A’s as “owning” the Yankees when they play in Oakland, correct? In any event, I hate it when my pitchers go against the Yankees in New York city. Almost as if (I perceive) all visiting teams, particularly pitchers, peeing their pants when they step onto that supposed “high altar of baseball.” Personally, if the Giants win the NL pennant, I WANT THE YANKEES TO REPRESENT THE AL, SO WE CAN AVENGE THE LOSS WE SUFFERED IN THE 1962 WORLD SERIES.

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 22, 2012 at 8:12 am

Blade, the Yanks have completely owned the A’s no matter where the games are. The last time the A’s won the season series was 2007. Since then, going into this series, the Yanks were 30-7 vs. the A’s, including a 3-game sweep at Oakland earlier this year, so this series is a most pleasant surprise for me and my fellow Yankee haters.

Also Flav: All the Yanks’ spending doesn’t guarantee a championship, of course, bu it just about guarantees they’re going to make the playoffs, which they’ve done every season but once since 1995. Even with these three losses to the A’s,they still have a 7-game lead in the AL East.

Z, to answer your last question: Very. All I have to do is think back to this time last year. A friend asked whether I was concerned about the D-Backs, and I dismissed them as pretenders. This was during the middle of the 3-game sweep at Cincy that was the beginning of the end for the Giants while the D-Backs caught fire the last two months.

The Giants certainly have the better pitching, but will that be enough? One concern is that while the Giants made up considerable ground in Kemp’s absence, they didn’t open up a bigger lead due to the pre-ASG slump and kept the Dodgers hanging around. But there’s two months to go and still 12 games left with the Bums, so no one’s running away with this yet.

I was thinking about movies and New York city because I have seen two recent movies (The Avengers and The Amazing Spiderman) where the destruction of NY – as a byproduct of the Super Heroes either battling each other, villains, and/or aliens – is 20 times worse than what the Al-Qaeda terrorists did to the World Trade Center. Probably Loo can only answer this, but it would seem that NY is plenty pissed off with Hollywood always using them for mass destruction scenes . . . Or, at least in the movies themselves, the townspeople of NY would go after the Super Heroes with pitchforks and torches, for always having their battles in NY city. At minimum, they should have that rich fuck, Tony Stark, pay for damages. 🙂

cults kinda scare me. Nate is fine back up, but really not better than pagan blanco melk in any way I can think of. He doesn’t hit with much power (his HR and extra base hit numbers are right around blanco’s), and doesn’t get on base much. He has a good arm and does well in RF, but has never played anywhere else so the others have him there too. He supposedly runs well, but that has never translated into steals either. The others are more versatile and have better skills, flat out.
what he’s best at, imo, is using the whole field to spray line drives in front of people with occasional gap doubles. Hitting the ball in the air to CF at ATT isn’t going to get him anywhere–he doesn’t have the pop to get one over that fence. I’m sure he would prosper in a hitters yard like NL central teams have or in colorado. But according to fangraphs he has a WAR of 0.3—even the slumping Pagan is way more valuable than that.

Berger— I didn’t delete your post, one of the stable boys did and they emailed me this morning and told me why they did it. As should be clear from me not posting even once yesterday, I wasn’t on the blog at all. I didn’t zap the other post until a few minutes ago. I was out when i read about it on my phone earlier this morning and it’s difficult to zap on my phone.
There was nothing wrong at all with loo’s comment. It was funny, something that sometimes gets missed here at the blog…….
And Berger, I didn’t read what you wrote but I’ve been in the same *8%* spot myself and all your other posts have been fine. No harm, no foul.
Now, please stop discussing last night’s *other* offensive post on the blog. If any of you want clarification, you can email me. I’m home all morning watching the British Open and the the Giants game so I am quite available.
So, in summary, drop this now…….

Honestly, Tiger was attacking and then not, but Ells has the crowd cheering. Scott is hanging in. Funny how they put those guys on the clock earlier.
BTW a Brit won the Tour de France. First time ever. He had won two cycling gold medals and then re-trained for road racing. To top it off another Brit took second.
AND Spaniard Alonso took the German F1 race for Ferrari, in 15 races this year there have been 13 different winners.
So, yeah it is a “sporting Sunday”
and now it is game time

Only this time, I saw the “edit” button and realized i could delete it and did. At this point, around 11, i had forgotten the “jew” comment so did not go back and delete. Berger i tried to send you an email letting you know but it didn’t go through. I also emailed the group. Anyway, that’s what happened and why. • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2012 at 11:27 am

I don’t understand why you have to get on every single negative thing the guys does. He’s had 18 starts this year and he’s either won or given the team a chance to win in 13 of those starts. I think anyone would take that from their #5.
He’s given up some dumb hits (Blanton) and some scorched hits but he’s gotten out of both innings by inducing ground balls (and I say *balls* because he had another double play if it weren’t for Belt’s errant throw) and a strike out to end the last inning.
He’s hardly perfect but I am at least happy when he pitches well. I don’t particularly like Nate but I was happy he hit a home run. Just be happy he’s pitching well this year and if the other shoe drops and he implodes for the rest of the year then you and Twin can lead the way in telling everyone you told us so……

You are the master of sardonic irony it seems. He has become such a contradiction since then, seeming to do and say exactly the wrong thing. From hero to goat all due to some dubious choices. Quite a shame actually.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 22, 2012 at 11:54 am

Agreed. I don’t know if there was anybody on the Flap more of a Huff promoter than I, back then. He seduced me with his fresh wild-hair character, and his performance. He was a breath of fresh air to the Giants, quite the anomaly to the paradigm “good Giant”. But, it was a glorious flash in the pan. He let himself get out of shape, and that was it. To me, that’s a betrayal, of sorts. Maybe his flame out adds to the 2010 mystique. Probably does…

Some have claimed his downfall came when he started hanging out with Burrell.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:15 pm

        who *claimed* that?

      • Robbie Lou's avatar Robbie Lou said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:24 pm

I honestly don’t recall where I read it, but apparently he was out chasing skirts, got busted by his wife and had some marital difficulties because of it. It didn’t take much imagination to believe it frankly. That was weeks ago that i read it but Huff made a public apology apparently to his wife and some statement about wanting to come back because he didn’t want his kids to think he was a quitter.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Huff has been a proud, self proclaimed partier since his days at University of Miami. And I didn’t see anything in your follow up post saying anything about Burrell luring him out to party…….

    • Robbie Lou's avatar Robbie Lou said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I wasn’t aware I would be asked to testify on what I read on some post a month or more ago. It didn’t seem too far-fetched that he would be out with Burrell, frankly, or that his notoriety in that sort of thing would be questioned. It didn’t offend me though in any way.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:47 pm

well, you made a fairly direct accusation that Huff’s demise was related to him partying and that Burrell was the guy who led him down that path. If you’re gonna say something like that I have every reason to question it since I’ve never heard that. I did hear about Huff’s marital problems and I do know Huff and Burrell went to college together and I’m sure they bagged their fair share of babes over the years. And then your follow up post said nothing about Burrell, just that Huff was out partying.
I don’t care one way or the other, it just seemed to me like you were making up the shit about Burrell and falling back on *some people* blaming his downfall on Burrell. Sounded like Rag newspaper talk to me……

As for the thread, I said LA would take the division, and I’ll stand by it. They’ll make some moves by the deadline for sure, Colletti will have the green light to bolster the hitting, I should think. Sabes will have to bolster, too. It might come down to the last 3 games at the Latrine, which would be grand theater…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:12 pm

surprised to see you think LA wins division, snarkk. In order to pick up talent they are going to have to give something up, and with a paucity of quality bats available, I could see them getting outbid. No one they have currently on the big club is going to bring in much, I don’t think. Lot of teams will be after Dempster too.

He definitely seems to have taken it harder than most. If just a slump, not that unusual for a youngster, but he can’t seem to get it out of his head.

I would really like to know what has gone on behind the curtain with him, Bochy, Meulens, etc. Whatever it’s been, it’s been disastrous. We won’t get the story from the beat writers. Now, anyway. Later, maybe, and the story will start with “it was common knowledge that…”

Love the intrigue and agree but you’re right, the baseball CIA has enforced the law and nobody’s talking. Washington could learn a lot from baseball. I imagine that Bochy has become a bit old and crabby and just given up being diplomatic. Though he may have always been crotchety for all I know. I still can’t believe he told Nate he’d never be an every day player, even if it was true. These young men are sensitive these days.

And Tim would prefer Posey playing first (just a different twist to Tim not wanting Buster catching).

  74. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:20 pm

I’m not against Fox using local guys for national broadcasts, but that Phillies broadcast crew made minimal effort to pretend to be impartial, and the call of the Cain homerun was a travesty. They had Cliff Lee miked, and he, and the Phillies play-by-play guy, and Mitch Williams start in talking about how great Hamels is, and Cain’s bat goes CRACK, and here’s the homerun call:
    Phillies broadcaster: “Uh-oh.”
    Lee: “No way.”
Phillies broadcaster, with voice low and sad, sounding like Cronkite announcing the death of JFK: “Matt Cain deep to left….and it’s gone….”
I’m absolutely not exaggerating. I have yesterday’s game DVRed, and just rewatched the play to hear that “homerun call” again. Cain crushes a homer off Hamels to tie the game, and that’s the call we got.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 22, 2012 at 12:30 pm

You are exactly right. The calls on the Cain HR and the Hamels HR were laughably different. KNBR played them one after the other yesterday, it was crazy. It was as if Hamel’s HR won the Pennant, and Cain’s was a disaster. Fox baseball broadcasting is a travesty…
